DigitalOcean’s published Basic Droplet list prices start at $4/month and include 500 GiB of outbound transfer; examples better suited to testing a continuous stream include $12/month (2 GiB RAM, 1 vCPU, 2,000 GiB) and $24/month (4 GiB RAM, 2 vCPUs, 4,000 GiB). CPU-optimized Droplets start at $42/month. Those are USD list prices, not a guaranteed India checkout total, and none proves that a particular Droplet can encode your video continuously. For a 24/7 YouTube stream, estimate bandwidth as well as compute, verify the exact size is available in Bangalore, and test your real workload before relying on it.
DigitalOcean VPS prices and included transfer
DigitalOcean’s public pricing table lists these example Basic Droplets and the entry CPU-optimized configuration. Prices are in USD and may change; the figures below were checked in 2026. Confirm current pricing and availability before creating a Droplet. DigitalOcean Droplet pricing.
| Droplet type | Monthly list price | CPU and memory | Included outbound transfer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $4/month | 1 shared vCPU, 512 MiB RAM | 500 GiB |
| Basic | $6/month | 1 shared vCPU, 1 GiB RAM | 1,000 GiB |
| Basic | $12/month | 1 shared vCPU, 2 GiB RAM | 2,000 GiB |
| Basic | $18/month | 2 shared vCPUs, 2 GiB RAM | 3,000 GiB |
| Basic | $24/month | 2 shared vCPUs, 4 GiB RAM | 4,000 GiB |
| CPU-optimized, starting example | $42/month | 2 dedicated vCPUs, 4 GiB RAM | 4,000 GiB |
The price table is a starting point, not a complete operating-cost estimate. DigitalOcean documents v5 Droplets as per-second billed without a monthly usage cap; documented resource rates include shared vCPU at $0.0158219/hour, general-purpose vCPU at $0.028/hour, memory at $0.0040411/GiB-hour, and boot disk at $0.000137/GiB-hour. Public IPv4 is billed separately for v5; its currently shown introductory rate is $0/hour and can change. Bundled CPU Droplets have a 60-second/$0.01 minimum and are capped at 672 billed hours per month. Check the current billing documentation for the exact Droplet generation and configuration you select. DigitalOcean Droplet billing details.
How much bandwidth does a 24/7 stream use?
DigitalOcean includes a transfer allowance with each Droplet plan, but the allowance and usage are pooled across your team’s Droplets, not granted separately to every Droplet. Inbound Droplet transfer is free; outbound transfer above the pooled allowance costs $0.01/GiB. Unused allowance does not roll over. Example: a 10 Mbps stream for 30 days
At a constant 10 megabits per second for 30 days, the stream payload alone is approximately 3.24 decimal TB, or about 2,957 GiB. This is calculated as 10 Mbps × 2,592,000 seconds ÷ 8, then converted using 1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes. It is arithmetic based on the stated bitrate and month length, not a published DigitalOcean statistic. It excludes protocol overhead, reconnects, other traffic, and any other Droplets using the team pool. Compare it with your plan’s allowance and your account’s total usage; sustained overage is charged at DigitalOcean’s stated $0.01/GiB rate.
For scale, the 10 Mbps example exceeds the listed 500 GiB and 2,000 GiB allowances, but is close to the 3,000 GiB example before overhead or shared usage. Do not assume the 4,000 GiB plan will cover every stream: bitrate, extra traffic, and pooled account usage change the result.

Compute cost depends on whether the VPS encodes or relays
A server that encodes or transcodes video, adds graphics, or handles multiple feeds has a different workload from one that relays an already prepared feed. DigitalOcean identifies CPU-optimized Droplets as suitable for media streaming, but that positioning is not a benchmark proving a particular configuration will meet a 24/7 encoding workload. YouTube’s bitrate guidance does not establish what CPU or memory a given VPS needs.
- Relay: the video is already encoded and the server forwards the feed. Network transfer remains a major cost consideration.
- Encode or transcode: the server must process video continuously. CPU capacity and workload stability become central, so do not infer suitability from monthly price alone.
- Graphics or multiple feeds: overlays and concurrent streams add workload; test the full intended setup rather than a simplified sample.
DigitalOcean’s published guidance describes CPU-optimized Droplets as appropriate for media streaming; treat this as product positioning, not a guarantee of encoding performance. Droplet plan guidance. Before committing to an always-on broadcast, run representative content and monitor CPU, memory, transfer, and YouTube stream health.

YouTube settings that affect the cost estimate
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension to RTMP. Its encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 options, constant bitrate, up to 60 frames per second, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Its H.264 recommendations include 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60; for AV1 or H.265, the listed recommendations are 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not VPS capacity requirements. YouTube encoder settings and bitrates.
YouTube’s streaming tips recommend about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate. For a 10 Mbps video feed, that means planning for roughly 12 Mbps of available upload capacity, before allowing for other traffic. YouTube also advises testing, checking failover, and monitoring audio, video, and stream health. YouTube live streaming tips.

India region, billing, and deployment checks
DigitalOcean lists a Bangalore datacenter, so an India-region deployment is available in principle. That does not establish that every listed Droplet size is available there. Confirm the exact configuration in the control panel or API before planning around Bangalore. Prices in the table are DigitalOcean USD list prices; the reviewed pricing information does not establish an India conversion rate, tax total, or card or bank fee. Check your account’s checkout and invoice for the amount actually billed. DigitalOcean pricing and regions.
- Choose the video’s resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate, then decide whether the VPS will relay or encode it.
- Compare the selected Droplet’s CPU and memory with the real workload; do not treat the lowest list price as proof of encoding capacity.
- Estimate monthly outbound transfer from the bitrate and broadcast hours, then compare it with the team-wide allowance and other Droplet usage.
- Check Bangalore availability for the exact size and calculate the final checkout and invoice cost.
- Test the complete stream and set up monitoring and recovery before leaving it unattended.
YouTube eligibility, stream keys, and archives
To livestream, YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days; the creator must be at least 16. Connect the encoder using the stream URL and stream key shown in YouTube’s Live Control Room. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it or share it, and rotate it if it is exposed. YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours. A continuous 24-hour broadcast exceeds that stated automatic-archive window, so do not rely on YouTube to create one complete archive of the full broadcast. Plan separate recordings or a different archive workflow if preserving the whole program matters. YouTube live stream archives.
Keeping a VPS stream reliable
A running server does not by itself guarantee an uninterrupted YouTube broadcast. The encoder process, source media, network path, and YouTube ingestion all need monitoring and recovery. Use YouTube’s stream-health status while testing and running the feed, and verify that your chosen software restarts cleanly after a process or server failure. Neither the published Droplet price nor a region listing is an uptime guarantee for the end-to-end broadcast.
Common cost and setup mistakes
- Choosing a Droplet by price alone: a low-cost plan may not handle encoding. Test the actual encode, graphics, and feed count; monitor CPU and memory.
- Forgetting outbound transfer: 24/7 bitrate accumulates quickly. Calculate the monthly payload and check the team pool and overage, not just the Droplet’s headline price.
- Assuming an allowance is per Droplet: DigitalOcean pools transfer across the team’s Droplets; account for all of them.
- Assuming a plan exists in Bangalore: region availability varies by size. Check the exact configuration before deployment.
- Treating server uptime as stream health: confirm that the encoder, source, network, and YouTube ingestion remain healthy, and test recovery behavior.
- Expecting a full 24-hour YouTube archive: the stated automatic archive behavior applies to streams under 12 hours; arrange another recording plan for longer broadcasts.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube channel that loops uploaded videos rather than streaming live camera footage, StreamNeo avoids maintaining a VPS and its encoder process yourself. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card.
The monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or its plan details. Start the free first day on StreamNeo.
