For a scheduled broadcast, wait until YouTube shows a preview, then select Go live. YouTube recommends RTMPS for the connection. A 24/7 stream still needs monitoring and an interruption plan; the official guidance does not guarantee that one FFmpeg session will stay connected indefinitely.
How do I connect FFmpeg to YouTube Live?
- Create the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live for an immediate setup. To schedule a broadcast, open Manage → Schedule stream and create an event or reuse its settings. Review the title, description, visibility and other event details before starting. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Copy the event’s connection details. In that broadcast’s Stream settings in Live Control Room, copy the Stream URL and stream key. FFmpeg needs both. A reusable key can simplify repeat setups, but treat it like a password: do not publish it or include it in a public command, log or screenshot.
- Use the RTMPS URL YouTube provides. In the Stream URL field, select the lock icon to reveal the RTMPS address. Copy that actual address into your encoder configuration rather than constructing or guessing an endpoint. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the stream between the encoder and YouTube. Details: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
- Configure FFmpeg for the event. Supply the copied URL and stream key to your FFmpeg workflow, and configure the video and audio encoding to suit your content, chosen resolution and frame rate, and sustained upload capacity. The exact command depends on your input and encoding choices; YouTube’s setup pages do not establish a verified FFmpeg command, so do not assume a generic command will match your source or requirements.
- Start the encoder and check reception. Start FFmpeg, then watch Live Control Room for the incoming stream and preview. For a scheduled broadcast, select Go live after the preview appears. Check stream health and listen to the audio while watching the video. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring rather than assuming a successful encoder process means a successful broadcast.
Where do I find my YouTube stream key?
Find it in the Stream settings for the specific broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room, alongside that event’s stream URL. YouTube Help describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key private. If it is exposed, reset it in the stream settings and replace the old value in the encoder; only channel owners or managers can reset a key. Read Manage live stream settings for key and permission details.
What FFmpeg stream settings should I check?
There is no single correct bitrate for every 24/7 stream. Choose settings by comparing resolution and frame rate, video codec, and the upload bitrate your connection can sustain continuously. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. Its recommendations vary by codec, resolution and frame rate, so consult the matching row in YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions guidance rather than applying one bitrate to all streams.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Upload capacity: Allow enough sustained upstream bandwidth for the selected video and audio settings. A connection that only reaches the target briefly may still fail during continuous streaming.
- Test the actual path: Confirm that the encoder sends both audio and video and that Live Control Room receives them at the intended quality before relying on the broadcast.
Will YouTube archive a 24/7 live stream?
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish automatic archiving for a single stream running 24/7, so do not rely on YouTube to preserve a complete archive of a continuous broadcast. If you need a recording, arrange a separate local or remote recording workflow and verify it independently.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Why is my YouTube stream preview not showing?
- No incoming stream: Re-copy the current event’s stream URL and key from Live Control Room, then check that the encoder is using both values and actually sending audio or video.
- Encoder startup error: YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends getting a new stream key for third-party encoder startup errors. Replace the old key in the encoder if you reset it.
- RTMPS SSL or timeout issue: Check that the copied server address begins with
rtmps, notrtmp. If your encoder requires an explicit port for URL handling, YouTube’s help guidance suggests port 443. Use the supplied server URL; do not append a guessed path. - Preview is present but playback is poor: Check stream health, confirm audio and video are being sent, and compare the selected resolution, frame rate and codec bitrate with YouTube’s recommendations and the connection’s sustained upload capacity.
- Scheduled event has not started publicly: An incoming preview is not the final step for a scheduled broadcast. Select Go live in Live Control Room once the preview appears.
For preparation and ongoing audio/video checks, see YouTube’s streaming tips. An uninterrupted FFmpeg process should not be assumed: the official guidance cited here does not guarantee indefinite session duration or specify FFmpeg automatic-reconnection behavior. Plan how you will monitor and respond to interruptions.
