The premise puts contract killing beside rent, workplace expectations and the awkward mechanics of becoming adults. The film runs 95 minutes and is directed by Yugo Sakamoto, with Akari Takaishi and Saori Izawa in the central roles.
Is it worth watching? The available official material makes a strong case for viewers who want a compact Japanese genre film built around the collision of violent work and everyday life. It does not, however, provide a basis for claiming that the performances, pacing, choreography or comedy definitively succeed. Those are matters for a screening and an attributed review, not facts that can be inferred from a synopsis. What can be established is what the film is, how it was released, what language options are documented and how it connects to the later sequel.
What is Baby Assassins about?
The story follows Chisato and Mahiro after they graduate from the life that has defined them as professional killers. Their handlers require them to adopt the outward signs of ordinary adulthood: hold regular jobs, maintain a household and live together. The arrangement sounds simple until their old occupation intrudes. According to the official synopsis from North American distributor Well Go USA, an encounter with a Yakuza member forces the pair to work together to survive.
That setup gives the film two simultaneous tracks. One is the practical coming-of-age problem of employment, money, domestic responsibility and social behavior. The other is the danger attached to two people whose professional skill is assassination. The contrast is the central dramatic engine rather than a separate subplot: mundane obligations become difficult because Chisato and Mahiro have been trained for an entirely different kind of life.

The Japanese Film Festival Australia presents the film as a story of two teenage assassins ordered to become ordinary members of society and live together. Its festival description highlights a mixture of brutality, humor and fight choreography. Those terms describe the festival’s promotional framing; they are not a measured claim about how effectively every scene balances those elements.
Because the premise is specific, the film is easier to distinguish from a generic hitwoman thriller. The question is not simply whether the protagonists can complete a job. It is whether people shaped by that job can function when the rules change from operational survival to ordinary social expectations.
Is it a comedy, an action film or both?
Official listings classify Baby Assassins as a Japanese action-comedy. That label matters because the premise depends on tonal collision: lethal expertise sits beside the pressures of a normal job and shared housing. The festival listing likewise emphasizes both violent material and ridiculous situations.
Readers should treat “action-comedy” as a genre description, not a guarantee about the ratio of jokes to fights or the success of either. No source supplied for this film establishes a critical score, audience poll, box-office total or named review quotation. The festival’s phrase “a major hit in Japan” is institutional promotional language and is not accompanied by a dated, quantified box-office figure.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf your decision depends on a particular balance—more gunplay than workplace comedy, for example—the synopsis alone cannot answer it. The documented information supports a more precise expectation: the film deliberately places assassin work and ordinary employment in the same narrative, and its official presentation expects viewers to read that contrast as both dangerous and comic.
Cast and creative credits
Yugo Sakamoto is credited as director by Well Go USA. The distributor lists Akari Takaishi, Saori Izawa, Masanori Mimoto, Mone Akitani, Atom Mizuishi, Yukina Fukushima and Satoshi Uekiya among the cast. Takaishi and Izawa play the central pair of Chisato and Mahiro in the premise described by the official synopsis and festival listing.

The available credits do not include a named-person interview quotation or a production account explaining how the leads approached the characters. It is therefore safer to discuss the roles and setup than to assign unverified claims about acting technique, stunt training or on-set relationships.
The film is a Japanese production from 2021. Busch Media Group’s regional listing identifies Japan as the country of production and preserves the 2021 production year. That listing is useful for confirming the film’s origin, but its release information applies to the German market rather than every territory.

How the coming-of-age premise works
Professional violence versus ordinary employment
Chisato and Mahiro are not beginners being introduced to assassination. They are described as professional teenage killers who must now present themselves as ordinary workers. That reversal creates a built-in source of friction: the skills that kept them alive may not help with supervisors, customers, schedules or the expectations of a shared workplace.
The official synopsis does not identify the jobs they take, the nature of their employer or the exact rules imposed by their handlers. Avoiding those details is useful when deciding whether to watch, because it preserves the film’s central discovery. The confirmed point is that ordinary jobs are imposed as cover and as a condition of their new life together.
Shared housing as a pressure cooker
Living together turns the premise into a relationship story as well as a crime story. A shared apartment requires routines and compromises that an isolated operative might avoid. The sources do not provide a scene-by-scene account of their domestic conflicts, so it would be misleading to describe specific arguments, habits or resolutions. What is established is that the apartment is part of the assignment and that the protagonists must negotiate it while remaining connected to the assassination world.

The Yakuza encounter
The inciting danger named by Well Go USA is an encounter with a Yakuza member. The synopsis says that this event requires Chisato and Mahiro to work together to survive. It does not identify the opponent’s role, the location, the precipitating mistake or the eventual outcome. Those omissions mean the safest spoiler-light description is also the most useful one: an old-world criminal threat makes their attempted ordinary life impossible to keep separate from their professional abilities.
What the film’s documented runtime means for viewers
At 95 minutes, Baby Assassins is feature-length but comparatively compact. That makes it a practical choice for a single evening and leaves less room than a two-hour crime saga for extensive backstory or multiple subplots. Runtime alone cannot prove that the film is fast-paced, tightly edited or fully developed; it only tells you the listed duration.
The 95-minute figure appears in Well Go USA’s North American listing and in Busch Media Group’s German-market listing. Because both distributors give the same duration, it is a useful expectation for the feature itself, while local platform files can still vary slightly because of logos, credits or regional versions.
Language, subtitles and regional editions
Well Go USA lists Japanese audio and English subtitles for its North American release. Busch Media Group’s German-market entry lists Japanese and German audio, German captions and the same 95-minute runtime. These are edition-specific details, not a universal promise that every platform or disc includes every track.
Before renting, buying or streaming, check the audio and subtitle menu for your territory. A German disc may not provide English subtitles, and an English-subtitled North American edition may not include German audio. The source listings establish the options for those releases, but they do not establish current availability in every country.
Release history and where the dates apply
Well Go USA lists August 16, 2022 as the release date for its North American market. Its official film page also supplies the English-subtitled, Japanese-audio specification used by that edition: Baby Assassins official film page.

It is a sensible pick if you are looking for a Japanese action-comedy whose hook is clear and unusual: two teenage assassins are forced to navigate jobs and an apartment as if they were ordinary young adults. The 95-minute runtime lowers the commitment, and the North American edition’s Japanese audio with English subtitles provides a documented way to watch the film in its original language.
It may be a poor match if you need a conventional realistic crime drama, a fully documented critical consensus or a guarantee of a particular comedy-to-action balance. The available official and festival material does not establish those qualities. It also does not support a verdict about whether the leads’ chemistry, the fight staging, the pacing or the jokes work for an individual viewer.
A responsible recommendation therefore has two parts. The premise, genre and format are well established and distinctive enough to justify trying the film. The evaluative question—whether it is good for you—depends on a screening rather than on metadata. Treat promotional descriptions as an invitation to investigate, not as a substitute for your own response.
How to choose a legitimate edition
- Identify your territory. Release dates and language tracks differ between the North American listing and the German-market listing.
- Read the format line. The German entry documents DVD, Blu-ray and VOD; the North American page supplies the film’s digital and physical-release information for that market. Confirm that the product is the original 2021 film, not the sequel.
- Check the language menu or packaging. North American specifications list Japanese audio and English subtitles. The German entry lists Japanese and German audio with German captions.
- Confirm the runtime. A listing close to 95 minutes is consistent with the documented feature; a markedly different duration may indicate a trailer, bonus program or another title.
- Verify current availability. Catalogue pages and old release announcements can remain online after a rental window closes. An Apple TV catalogue page exists at Apple TV’s Baby Assassins listing, but a catalogue entry alone does not prove that the film is currently playable in your country.
What not to confuse with the original
Baby Assassins 2 is a separate sequel, not an alternate title for the 2021 film. JFDB identifies the sequel and credits Yugo Sakamoto with the screenplay and Kensuke Sonomura as action director. Its synopsis says Chisato and Mahiro struggle to make money while two part-time association workers attempt to replace them: JFDB sequel entry.

The sequel’s documented North American specifications are also different. The notice announced digital and Blu-ray availability on that date and Hi-YAH! streaming from July 5, 2024: official sequel trailer and release details. Those were historical release windows, not a guarantee of present availability.

A spoiler-light viewing checklist
- Expect a Japanese-language production whose North American edition uses English subtitles.
- Expect the central conflict to involve ordinary jobs and cohabitation rather than an assassination assignment alone.
- Expect a criminal threat connected to a Yakuza encounter to force the protagonists to cooperate.
- Expect the film to be presented as an action-comedy, while recognizing that promotional genre language cannot quantify the balance of tones.
- Allow about 95 minutes for the feature, excluding menus, trailers and regional bonus material.
- Check whether the listing is for the 2021 original or the 101-minute sequel.
Limits of what can be concluded from the available record
No consulted source supplies a named critic’s quotation, an audience statistic, a box-office figure or a review score. The runtime and release dates are cataloguing facts, not popularity measurements. Likewise, the festival’s “major hit in Japan” wording is promotional and unquantified.
No source establishes the film’s exact production budget, shooting locations, stunt methodology, music credits, age rating in every territory, streaming permanence or retailer stock. Those details should not be inferred from the basic listings. If a platform displays a different subtitle set, runtime or rating, use that platform’s regional record for the edition you are considering.
Final assessment
Baby Assassins has a sharply defined reason to exist: it asks what happens when two teenage professional assassins are told to perform adulthood through jobs, domestic life and social camouflage. The 2021 Japanese action-comedy is directed by Yugo Sakamoto, centers on Chisato and Mahiro, and is documented at 95 minutes. Those facts make it an appealing discovery for viewers drawn to genre hybrids and character setups that place extreme violence beside ordinary routines.
Whether the film delivers the right chemistry, laughs or fight-scene impact cannot be honestly settled from a synopsis or distributor page. Start with the original 2021 feature, verify the language and territory of your edition, and keep the 2024 sequel separate when comparing runtimes or release dates. That is the clearest evidence-based answer to “Is Baby Assassins worth watching?”: its premise and accessible length make it worth considering, while the final verdict belongs to the viewer who watches it.
