It moves from the palace courtyards into the throne room and then toward more private spaces, while placing a painted relief of a winged, eagle-headed figure back into a proposed architectural setting. You can watch it on The Met’s official video page.
This is not footage of a surviving building and it is not a claim that every reconstructed wall, color, height or room function is certain. The digital model reunites archaeological records, drawings, photographs, relief fragments and earlier scholarship so viewers can see spatial relationships that are difficult to recover from scattered evidence. Its strongest value is as an interpretive tool for history, architecture and teaching.
What the video reconstructs
The film presents the Northwest Palace as it may have appeared during the reign of Ashurnasirpal II in the ninth century BCE. The palace was built primarily by Ashurnasirpal II, who ruled from 883 to 859 BCE, on the citadel of Nimrud. The Institute for the Visualization of History describes it as the largest and most extensively excavated palace at the site. Nimrud is the modern name commonly used for ancient Kalhu, an Assyrian capital located near present-day Mosul in northern Iraq. The Metropolitan Museum’s exhibition page places the film in the context of Assyria to Iberia at the Dawn of the Classical Age, held from September 22, 2014, through January 4, 2015: Met exhibition and video information.
Rather than showing a single object, the camera follows an architectural sequence. It approaches through outer courtyards, enters the throne-room complex, and proceeds toward areas that were more restricted or private. The route gives the viewer a sense of thresholds, sightlines and changing degrees of access. A winged, eagle-headed figure appears within a proposed original placement, accompanied by an interpretation of how its painted surface and surrounding architecture might have looked.

The continuity of the animation is deliberately persuasive: floors meet walls, reliefs occupy bays and rooms connect in a plausible order. That visual smoothness should not be confused with equal certainty. Some elements derive directly from surviving measurements or fragments; others represent hypotheses made to complete missing information.
How to follow the palace tour
1. Begin with the courtyards
The opening spaces establish that an Assyrian palace was a sequence of controlled approaches rather than one open hall. Courtyards could admit movement, light and visitors while separating public circulation from more restricted rooms. In the film, notice how the camera crosses boundaries and how relief-bearing walls frame the next space. These transitions are part of the argument: architecture organized who could see what, and from where.
2. Enter the throne room
The throne room is the visual and political center of the reconstruction. Its scale, wall decoration and relationship to adjacent courts are among the questions the project set out to examine. Watch the changing distance between the camera and the reliefs. A visitor standing in the room would not experience the entire sculptural program as a flat picture; movement, angle, illumination and proximity would have shaped what could be read.
3. Move toward restricted spaces
The final part of the route turns toward rooms interpreted as more private and possibly connected with ritual activity. The film does not provide a definitive ancient label for every room. Instead, it lets viewers consider how circulation patterns, access and architectural position might support different functional interpretations.

4. Study the winged, eagle-headed figure in context
The relief is not shown as an isolated museum panel. It is placed on a wall, surrounded by neighboring decoration and a proposed color scheme. This contextual presentation matters because meaning depended on repetition, scale, borders, doorways and the relationship between images and people moving through the palace.
What evidence supports the digital model?
The reconstruction grew from documentation accumulated over more than a century. British excavations at Nimrud began in the nineteenth century, and intensive work resumed in 1949. The project account records the use of excavation data, architectural drawings, photographs, relief fragments and earlier studies to assemble a common spatial framework. The Institute for the Visualization of History explains the project’s methods and goals at The Citadel at Nimrud/Kalhu: Northwest Palace Setting and Solution.
Work on a three-dimensional digital reconstruction began in 1997. The Learning Sites history describes collecting photographs and drawings of reliefs from the courtyard outside the throne room and from the throne room itself, then mapping those records into a shared virtual environment. This process allows a fragment or drawing held in one archive to be considered alongside architectural evidence from another record, without pretending that the original pieces have been physically reunited.
| Question the model addresses | How the project approached it | What viewers should infer |
|---|---|---|
| How large and tall was the throne-room complex? | Architectural measurements, excavation records and comparative scholarship were assembled in a spatial model. | The proportions are informed estimates, not a complete surviving survey. |
| Was there a second tier of pictorial narrative above the preserved reliefs? | The project tested whether available evidence could support an upper register. | The possibility is a hypothesis under examination, not an established feature of every wall. |
| What color covered the wall backgrounds? | Surviving traces, painted fragments and parallels were considered when proposing background tones. | Color is reconstructed selectively; much original pigment has been lost. |
| How were scenes, figures, trees and borders distributed? | Drawings and photographs were mapped to wall surfaces to test sequences and spacing. | The arrangement shows a reasoned proposal where the record is incomplete. |
| How did people move and see inside the palace? | Virtual circulation and lighting experiments made sightlines and thresholds visible. | The animation raises questions about experience; it does not record an ancient visitor’s route. |
The table’s distinctions are essential. A model can be internally consistent while individual decisions remain debatable. Digital reconstruction makes those decisions easier to inspect, revise and discuss because changing a wall height, relief position or light source can expose the consequences across an entire room.

Why color and placement are interpretive decisions
Assyrian reliefs are often encountered today as pale stone surfaces in galleries. In the palace, however, carved images could have been integrated with painted backgrounds, borders and other colored details. The project investigated possible wall colors and the distribution of scenes, figures and trees. The film’s palette therefore communicates a scholarly proposal about appearance, not a guarantee that every hue is known.
The same caution applies to placement. A relief fragment may preserve an image but not its original wall, height or neighboring panel. Drawings and photographs can document a location, yet earlier excavations sometimes separated objects from their architectural setting. By placing a winged, eagle-headed figure within a complete room, the model asks what that image would have communicated as part of a larger program. It does not prove that the proposed position is the only possible one.
Lighting is another variable. Sunlight entering a courtyard, daylight filtered through doorways and the changing brightness of interior rooms would have affected how inscriptions and figures were seen. A digital environment can test alternative illumination and reveal which reliefs would have been legible from particular approaches. Those tests are useful even when they end with several plausible outcomes rather than one final answer.
How the reconstruction serves scholarship and teaching
The project was designed not only for public display but also for research and education. Its account emphasizes questions about architectural design, sculpture, lighting, circulation and the probable function of rooms. A virtual model lets students compare a plan with a three-dimensional route, examine how a relief aligns with a doorway, or ask why one space appears more accessible than another.

For classroom use, the Harvard Museum of the Ancient Near East provides teaching material on Mesopotamian monuments at Teacher Resources for Mesopotamian Monuments. A practical viewing sequence can keep observation separate from interpretation:
- Observe: Record each change in doorway, courtyard, wall decoration and room scale without assigning a function.
- Map: Sketch the route from the outer court to the throne room and onward to restricted areas. Mark where the camera pauses or changes height.
- Question: Identify which details appear to come from surviving evidence and which require a completion, such as a roof, upper register or color field.
- Compare: Look at a relief image or excavation drawing and ask what information is gained, and what information is lost, when it is returned to a virtual wall.
- Discuss uncertainty: Present two possible explanations for an ambiguous room or lighting condition rather than treating the animation as a photograph.
This approach turns the film into a lesson in historical method. Students learn that evidence can be incomplete without being useless, and that a reconstruction can be valuable precisely because it makes assumptions visible.

Nimrud’s archaeological heritage has suffered severe destruction. ORACC’s account of Kalhu in 2015 explains both the damage to the Northwest Palace and the continuing value of existing records for future study and education: Kalhu in 2015. Photographs, drawings, excavation notes, object records and digital models can preserve information about a damaged site, but they do not restore its masonry, replace surviving artifacts or reproduce the experience of standing there.
That distinction is especially important when viewing a polished animation. The model is a new scholarly object built from old evidence. It can reunite dispersed documentation, test a proposed circulation route and suggest how sculpture and architecture worked together. It cannot settle every disagreement about the palace, and it should always be read alongside archaeological records and the physical reliefs that remain.

Historical orientation: Ashurnasirpal II and Kalhu
Ashurnasirpal II made Kalhu a major royal center in the ninth century BCE and commissioned the Northwest Palace as a monumental seat of power. The palace’s size and extensive excavation history explain why it has become a focus for architectural and art-historical study. The film concentrates on this one palace; it is not a reconstruction of another Assyrian capital or of an entire city.
Names can create confusion. Kalhu is the ancient Assyrian name, while Nimrud is the later name used for the archaeological mound. Modern geographic references place the site near Mosul in northern Iraq. Keeping those names and locations distinct helps viewers understand that the video addresses a specific citadel and palace rather than a generic image of Assyria.
Using the film alongside further resources
For a concise introduction to objects and site history, ORACC’s catalogue of online Nimrud resources gathers links focused on Kalhu, Assyrian texts and archaeological documentation: ORACC Nimrud online resources. The Bowdoin College Museum of Art’s exhibition page provides object-focused context for palace reliefs from Kalhu: Palace Reliefs from Kalhu (Nimrud).
The Learning Sites project history records later visualization and colorization work, including the Northwest Palace project page at Learning Sites: Northwest Palace colorization. Its support pages document the broader educational setting at Learning Sites support information. Availability and collaboration details can change, so treat those pages as project documentation rather than a promise of an ongoing program.

What to take away from the 2:55-minute film
The video’s achievement is spatial. It brings courtyards, the throne room, restricted areas and sculptural decoration into one navigable sequence while showing how much interpretation is required to make that sequence visible. Ashurnasirpal II’s palace is not presented as perfectly recovered; it is presented as a set of evidence-based possibilities that can be tested, taught and revised.
Watch the animation for its proposed relationships—between doors and reliefs, courts and interiors, color and carved imagery—not merely for its rendered surfaces. The most responsible viewing combines the film’s visual clarity with the caution demanded by incomplete archaeological evidence.
