Probably not—but the Oscars are no longer the automatic mass-television event they were. Recent audiences have recovered sharply from the pandemic-era low, then slipped again, while clips, social video and streaming have spread attention across more platforms. The ceremony still ranks as the season’s biggest primetime entertainment broadcast and can command enormous online conversation. Its problem is conversion: it has not yet turned that fragmented attention into a consistently large live audience. A planned move to YouTube for the 2029 ceremony through 2033 will test whether the Academy can make digital distribution the center of the event rather than an add-on to broadcast television.
Are the Oscars becoming irrelevant?
The Oscars are losing mass reach, not all cultural relevance. The old benchmark was a shared national television night: more than 55 million people watched Titanic win 11 awards in 1998, according to the Associated Press. Recent ceremonies attract roughly 18–20 million viewers, a dramatic reduction in live scale, but that audience remains large enough to make the show a major entertainment event.
What has changed is where attention appears. Viewers may watch a few acceptance speeches, a performance or a red-carpet clip without sitting through the entire broadcast. That behavior can make the live Nielsen average look weak even when the ceremony is generating substantial conversation and video consumption elsewhere. Calling that “irrelevance” treats one measurement as the whole audience.

How have Oscars ratings changed?
The recent record shows a pandemic collapse, a strong rebound and then a setback. The figures below come from AP, the Los Angeles Times, Disney’s fast-national release and later Nielsen reporting; the measurements are not all identical, so each qualification matters.
| Ceremony or year | Reported U.S. audience | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| 1998 | More than 55 million | AP’s comparison point for Titanic winning 11 Oscars |
| 2021 | About 10.4–10.5 million | All-time low during the pandemic, reported by AP and the Los Angeles Times |
| 2024 | 19.5 million | Up 4% from 2023; the Oppenheimer and Barbie phenomenon helped broaden interest |
| 2025 | 18.07 million initially; 19.69 million final | Disney’s fast-national result versus later Nielsen reporting that added streaming-device viewing |
| 2026 | 17.9 million | Down 9% from 2025, the lowest total in four years, yet still the season’s No. 1 primetime entertainment telecast |
The preliminary and final 2025 totals are not contradictory. A fast-national report is an early estimate, while the later combined ABC/Hulu figure incorporated additional viewing measured on streaming devices. They should not be blended into a single trend line without labeling the difference.
Why are Oscars ratings falling?
Appointment television has weakened
The decline tracks a broader change in real-time television. The AP reported that awards-show audiences have fallen alongside live viewing of broadcast and cable programs. More households now record, stream or watch highlights later, so fewer people need to be in front of one channel at the same moment.
Long ceremonies compete with clip culture
The Los Angeles Times identified online clips and the length of live awards shows as major behavior changes. A viewer can see the winning speech, a surprise reaction or a musical performance within minutes, often with commentary attached. That convenience removes the practical reason to commit an entire evening to the linear broadcast.
This does not mean viewers reject the ceremony’s content. It means the show must compete with an internet built around selectable moments. Walter Hanley, a former music-industry worker quoted by AP-NORC, summarized the pressure this way: “You have to cater to what the viewers want.” He also observed, “These days, it’s more focused on the performances.”
Nominated films are not equally familiar
Film visibility affects the size of the potential audience. The 2024 ceremony benefited from Oppenheimer and Barbie, whose combined worldwide box office was reported at $2.4 billion. Those titles gave casual viewers a personal stake in the results, even if they did not follow awards-season coverage.

When the leading nominees are less familiar art-house films, the ceremony can still matter to critics and committed moviegoers but offer fewer entry points for a broad television audience. Familiarity is not the only ratings driver—host, running time, performances, competition and news events matter too—but it changes how many people recognize the names on screen.
Do people still watch the Oscars or only the clips?
Both patterns exist. An AP-NORC poll found that about six in ten U.S. adults had watched an awards show, clips from one, or both during the previous year. Adults under 45 were more likely than older adults to report consuming both the full shows and clips, which argues against a simple “young people have abandoned awards” explanation.
The same polling found that Black and Hispanic adults were more likely than white adults to say they watched an awards show or related clips. That result does not prove that every demographic is equally engaged, but it does show why a single overall rating can conceal meaningful differences in who is paying attention and how.
For the Oscars, the practical question is therefore not “Do people watch?” but “Which parts do they watch, on which service, and at what time?” A household that skips the broadcast but watches several official clips is still part of the ceremony’s audience, although that attention has a different commercial and cultural value from a live viewer.
What do social interactions and video views reveal?
Digital measures show that attention has been redistributed rather than erased. Disney reported 104.2 million social interactions around the 2025 ceremony, along with a six-year high among adults aged 18–34. The AP reported more than 129 million video views on Academy social platforms during the 2026 night.

Those figures cannot be substituted directly for a Nielsen live average. A live audience is a concurrent viewing estimate; social interactions and platform video views are collected through different systems and measurement windows. They may include activity around individual moments rather than continuous viewing of the ceremony. The responsible conclusion is that the Oscars have substantial distributed attention, not that a social total equals a television audience.

Distributed attention can still have consequences. A memorable speech may reach people who never saw the broadcast, drive searches for a film or actor and keep the ceremony in public conversation after the telecast. The Academy’s challenge is to connect those moments to sustained interest in the whole event instead of treating viral clips as a separate product.
What happens to Oscars distribution after the Hulu and YouTube changes?
Where the ceremony was available in 2025
The 2025 Oscars aired live on ABC and streamed live on Hulu, reaching more than 200 territories. Hulu is a current example of access, not a permanent guarantee: rights, blackout rules and supported territories can change by ceremony and by country. Viewers should check the local broadcaster or the Academy’s official listings for the year they intend to watch.
What the 2029 YouTube deal means
YouTube is reported to become the exclusive global outlet beginning with the 101st ceremony in 2029 and continuing through 2033. This is an announced future distribution arrangement, not a subscription product that viewers can use today. The agreement could remove regional friction by putting the ceremony on a platform already used for short-form and long-form video, but the exact product experience, advertising model, age requirements and territorial terms have not been established.

The move is strategically important because it aligns the live show with the same platform where many people already encounter Oscar clips. It also creates new risks: a global digital outlet must handle local rights, language options, peak demand and discovery in a way that a familiar broadcast schedule once handled automatically.
How should the Oscars’ relevance be measured?
A single rating cannot answer a cultural question. A more useful scorecard has at least five dimensions:
- Live reach: total viewers and adults 18–49 or 18–34 ratings for the simultaneous telecast.
- Distributed attention: official video views, social interactions, clips and conversation measured over a stated period.
- Audience breadth: age, race and ethnicity, geography and how familiar viewers are with the nominated films.
- Cultural conversion: whether nominations and wins lead people to seek out films, performances, actors or related discussions afterward.
- Distribution resilience: the ability to reach viewers through broadcast-only, broadcast-plus-streaming or platform-native access when habits change.
These measures answer different questions. Live reach tells you how many people chose the same time and place. Distributed attention tells you how far individual moments traveled. Cultural conversion asks whether the ceremony changed what people watched or discussed next.

Can the Oscars rebuild a larger audience?
Make the nominated work easier to recognize
High-profile films can create a natural gateway, as the 2024 rebound demonstrated. The Academy cannot manufacture another Barbie or Oppenheimer every year, but it can explain unfamiliar nominees clearly, use accessible clips and give viewers reasons to care about categories beyond the headline prizes.

Reducing dead time, clarifying the order of major awards and placing performances or emotional moments where viewers are most likely to stay could make the broadcast more competitive with on-demand video. Any redesign has to preserve the ceremony’s sense of occasion; turning every segment into a short clip would remove the collective ritual that makes a live show distinctive.
Build for two viewing modes
The future audience will include people watching from the opening monologue through Best Picture and people arriving for a single speech. A strong digital plan can support both with reliable live access, searchable official clips, captions, time-zone options and fast post-show publishing. Those features should complement—not replace—the reasons to watch the winners unfold in real time.
Use social success as a bridge, not a consolation prize
Large interaction and view totals are valuable only if they lead somewhere: to the films, to the next ceremony or to a deeper relationship with the Academy. Treating online reach as proof that the live broadcast no longer matters would accelerate fragmentation instead of solving it.

For ceremonies before the announced YouTube transition, availability depends on the broadcaster and territory. In 2025, U.S. viewers had ABC and Hulu, while the event reached more than 200 territories through international arrangements. For 2029 onward, the announced plan names YouTube as the exclusive global outlet through 2033, but practical details such as regional access, language feeds and whether every stream is free have not been published.

So, are the Oscars headed for irrelevancy?
The Oscars are headed away from their old role as a near-universal television appointment, but the evidence does not support calling them irrelevant. Live reach remains substantial, the ceremony still leads primetime entertainment broadcasts, and its moments travel widely among younger and diverse audiences. The unresolved issue is whether the Academy can turn that scattered attention into a durable audience for the full event.
The 2029 YouTube arrangement will be the clearest test yet. If a global, platform-native broadcast makes the ceremony easier to find while preserving the drama of live results, the Oscars may become smaller as television and stronger as a digital event. If viewers continue to consume only isolated clips, the institution will retain symbolic importance while losing the shared mass audience that once defined Oscar night.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did the 2025 Oscars have two different audience totals?
The 18.07 million number was Disney’s early fast-national estimate. Later Nielsen reporting put the combined ABC and Hulu audience at 19.69 million after additional streaming-device viewing was incorporated, so the figures describe different stages of measurement.
Will YouTube definitely stream every Oscars broadcast worldwide for free?
The announced arrangement identifies YouTube as the exclusive global outlet from the 2029 ceremony through 2033. It does not yet establish pricing, regional restrictions, language feeds or the exact live-product format, so viewers should wait for territory-specific details.
Can a less-famous group of nominees make the Oscars less popular?
Yes, familiarity affects the number of casual viewers who recognize the films and feel invested in the results. It is only one factor, alongside runtime, host, performances, scheduling and competition from other programming.
Why are social-media views not counted as Oscar ratings?
They measure different behavior. A live rating estimates simultaneous viewing of the program, while platform views and social interactions track activity around individual posts or moments over a stated window; one cannot be converted into the other without a common methodology.
