Apple TV+ offered free access to its programming on Saturday, January 4, and Sunday, January 5, 2025. Apple announced the limited-time promotion on December 30, 2024; the weekend has passed, and it was not a permanent free tier or a recurring offer.
What the free weekend included
Contemporaneous coverage described the promotion as access to Apple TV+ content generally, not just one premiere or a short list of selected shows. Examples included Severance, Ted Lasso, Slow Horses and Foundation, along with Apple Original films, documentaries and other programming in the catalog at the time. Thurrott’s December 30, 2024 report outlined the announcement and examples.
Catalogs can vary by country, so the examples should not be read as a guarantee that every title was available in every region. The report said Apple TV+ was available in more than 100 countries and regions at the time, but did not verify identical promotional terms in each one.
Choosing what to sample
- Severance is a workplace mystery and thriller.
- Ted Lasso combines comedy with a sports-drama setting.
- Slow Horses is a spy drama.
- Foundation offers science fiction and fantasy.
For a two-day sampler, viewers could try an episode from several series or choose one film; that is a viewing suggestion, not an Apple recommendation.

Where viewers could watch
The December 2024 report listed Apple devices, the Apple TV app for Windows, the web app, selected Samsung, LG, Sony, VIZIO and TCL smart TVs, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Google TV devices, PlayStation and Xbox. This is a historical list, and app availability can change. Platform support did not itself guarantee that the promotion or a particular title was available in every market.
At the time of the promotion, the report said Apple did not offer a native Apple TV app for Android. That is a statement about December 2024, not a claim about current Android support.

What “Apple TV+” meant—and what it did not
Apple TV+ is the subscription service for Apple’s originals. The Apple TV app is also a hub and storefront where other movies and shows may be offered for purchase or rental. The free weekend was described as access to Apple TV+ programming; it did not make every item displayed in the app free.
The dates were January 4–5, 2025. The available report did not specify a universal start or end hour or a single time zone, so it does not establish an exact 48-hour window for every location.

Account and billing details were not fully documented
The announcement was presented as a way to stream Apple TV+ without an active subscription during that weekend. However, the contemporaneous report did not establish whether viewers needed an Apple Account, had to add a payment method, or were treated differently if they already had a subscription or trial. It also did not document whether access activated automatically or required sign-in. Claims that no account or payment details were required would go beyond the published information.
What happened after January 5
The offer was limited to that weekend; the report did not describe access continuing afterward. Watching during the promotion did not establish an ongoing entitlement. Continued viewing would require a valid subscription, trial, bundle or another applicable promotion. The December 2024 report listed U.S. subscription prices of $9.99 monthly and $99 annually, and said Apple TV+ was included in Apple One plans beginning at $19.95 per month. Those are historical figures from that report, not current prices.

Why Apple offered the weekend
The promotion gave people a chance to sample Apple Originals and could help introduce non-subscribers to the catalog. That is a reasonable interpretation of the offer, not a documented explanation of Apple’s marketing rationale.
