Short answer: Apple TV+ was genuinely free to stream in the United States on January 4–5, 2025. But for the weekend of August 15–16, 2026, Apple’s official U.S. pages show a seven-day free trial—not a newly confirmed free-access weekend.
That distinction matters: the standard trial is for eligible new subscribers, requires accepting a subscription that renews at $12.99 per month, and must be canceled before the displayed renewal date if you do not want to continue.
Where the “free this weekend” claim came from
Apple did run a limited free-streaming promotion on Saturday, January 4, and Sunday, January 5, 2025. Contemporary reporting described the event as a chance to watch Apple’s streaming catalog without the usual subscription charge during that weekend. TechCrunch reported the promotion at the time, and Apple also promoted it in a January 2025 video.
That offer was a one-time, date-specific promotion. It does not establish a recurring annual “free weekend,” and old articles, reposts, or social-media posts can make the 2025 headline look current.

As of August 16, 2026, the official Apple TV U.S. page and Apple’s main Apple TV page advertise the normal seven-day trial. No comparable U.S. free weekend for August 15–16, 2026 is verified by those current pages and sources.
What Apple offers now
Seven-day trial
Eligible new subscribers can start with seven days free, after which the subscription is advertised at $12.99 per month in the United States. The subscription renews unless it is canceled. Eligibility is account-specific, so the offer shown after signing in is the one that controls.
Three months with an eligible Apple device
Apple advertises three months of Apple TV access with qualifying newly purchased and activated devices, including certain iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV purchases. Redemption deadlines and eligibility restrictions apply, and an account that has already accepted a comparable promotion may not qualify. See Apple’s offer information and terms before relying on it.

Buying hardware solely to obtain streaming access is usually a poor bargain; this option makes sense when you have already bought an eligible device.

Student access
Eligible students can check Apple’s Music Student Plan, which includes Apple TV access. Apple currently advertises one month free for the student plan. This is not the same as a universal standalone Apple TV+ weekend pass, and student verification is required. Details appear on Apple’s Apple TV page.
Apple One
Apple TV is included in Apple One alongside other Apple services. It can make sense for someone already paying for several of those services or sharing them with a household, but it is not “free” in the strict sense: it is part of a paid bundle. Compare the current plans at Apple One.

Apple TV and Peacock bundle
Apple’s current offer page also shows an Apple TV-and-Peacock bundle starting at $14.99 per month, with a higher-priced option for ad-free Peacock. How to start the current trial safely
- Open the Apple TV app or visit Apple’s U.S. subscription offer page.
- Sign in with your Apple Account.
- Select the free-trial offer displayed for your account, if one is available.
- Before confirming, check the renewal date and the post-trial price.
- Start watching after activation and set a reminder several days before renewal.
- If you do not want to continue, cancel through the subscription settings before the displayed renewal date.
Save the cancellation confirmation or a screenshot. If the trial was started through an app store, mobile carrier, smart-TV platform, or another partner, cancellation may need to be completed through that billing provider. Do not assume that canceling always ends access immediately—or always preserves access until the final trial day. Check the expiration information shown on the account.

Apple’s announcements provide the current sports context for Formula 1 and August 2026 Friday Night Baseball. Sports rights vary by country, season, event, and blackout or availability rules.
Not everything visible in the Apple TV app is included. The app can also show movies and programs available to rent or buy, as well as third-party channels and services. A title’s presence in the app is not proof that it is part of the subscription. Look for an indication that it is included with Apple TV rather than a rental or purchase price.
