America’s Got Talent is a real talent competition presented through heavily selected and edited television. Acts can submit videos, audition virtually or appear at in-person auditions; producers choose which acts move forward; and the broadcast team orders footage, reaction shots and conversations into a story. Those are documented production practices. They do not prove that contestants’ abilities, judges’ decisions or winners are generally fabricated.
The often-repeated “10 totally fake and 10 real” list cannot be verified from the available record. Rather than invent twenty accusations, this guide separates supported production choices from claims that remain unproven.
What is genuinely production-shaped
These points are supported by official audition information, Season 21 terms, producer commentary and one attributed contestant account. “Production-shaped” means television framing or selection—not necessarily a fake performance.

1. The televised audition is not an unfiltered open call
The official audition site invites performers to submit a video, audition virtually or attend in person where available. It says, “We want to see your act whether you meet us virtual or just send us a video of your act.” Viewers therefore see a curated portion of the people who try to audition.

2. Producers review acts before viewers see them
Official audition information says producers may contact selected video applicants for a later round. Producer review is real; it is not evidence that the selected talent is fake.
3. Different audition routes feed the same television process
A person shown on the program may have entered through a video submission, a virtual audition or an in-person opportunity. The episode does not represent one single queue or one complete day of public auditions.
4. Submitted audition videos are subject to production rights
Season 21’s online audition terms, dated October 23, 2025, identify Marathon Productions, Inc. as producer and describe rights over submitted audition material. Those terms document control over what applicants send and how it may be used; they do not say the underlying act was fabricated.

Executive producer Sam Donnelly discussed how Season 20 presented audition days, including more non-audition interactions and an effort to keep sequences as linear as possible. That is direct evidence that the broadcast is arranged for viewers rather than being a raw, continuous record.

6. Reaction footage can be gathered for the program’s narrative
A 2026 Tribune report attributed to contestant Brian Saidel an account that he was directed to act nervous and that reaction material was staged or collected. This is one contestant’s reported experience at one taping, not proof of a show-wide rule.
7. The apparent order of events may be an editorial choice
Because producers discuss arranging audition-day material into a more linear sequence, the order in an episode should not automatically be treated as the exact order in which every exchange occurred.
8. A contestant’s backstory may be presented selectively
Editing can choose which conversations and interactions accompany an act. The available producer comments establish presentation choices, but they do not establish that every personal story is invented.
9. A dramatic reaction is not independent proof of timing
When reaction material is collected or repositioned, a viewer cannot use the broadcast alone to establish precisely when that reaction was filmed. Saidel’s account supports that caution for his reported taping.

10. “Fake” can describe framing, not the skill itself
A real performance can be surrounded by selected shots, narration and edited reactions. Calling the framing constructed is materially different from claiming the act or result was staged.
What the available evidence supports as real
The following are concrete elements documented by the sources. They should not be inflated into proof that every moment is spontaneous.
1. People can submit an actual act by video
The official audition site expressly accepts videos and explains that selected applicants may be contacted for another round.
2. Virtual auditions are a genuine route
The same official information lists virtual auditions, subject to availability. A televised contestant therefore need not have stood in a single traditional open-call line.

3. In-person auditions exist where offered
Official audition guidance also describes attending in person when that option is available for the relevant season and location.
4. Contestants submit material under formal terms
Season 21 applicants were presented with eligibility paperwork, releases and production acknowledgements. The existence of those documents is verifiable even though their exact wording may change by season.
5. Producers make selection decisions
The official process says producers review acts and contact selected applicants. Selection is a real gate between applying and appearing on television.

Nothing in the cited terms or audition instructions establishes that the underlying applicant does not exist or that every act is computer-generated or wholly invented.

7. Production commentary openly acknowledges editing
Donnelly’s discussion of Season 20 describes presentation choices rather than pretending the program is an untouched live feed. The editing process is real and publicly acknowledged.
8. One contestant’s account is still an account of a real taping
The Tribune report attributes Saidel’s description to him and places it at a particular taping. It should be assessed as a bounded first-person allegation, not silently expanded into a universal claim.
9. The evidence does not show that all judges’ decisions are scripted
The official terms, producer interview and reported contestant account do not establish a show-wide script controlling judges’ choices.

10. The evidence does not show that winners are predetermined
None of the cited material demonstrates that results are fixed in advance. Suspicion or online discussion is not documentation of a predetermined winner.

- That contestants’ skills are generally fake or performed by substitutes.
- That judges receive a universal script for every comment or reaction.
- That all audience responses are manufactured.
- That every emotional backstory is invented.
- That a particular winner was selected before the competition.
Those allegations require direct documentation or a clearly attributable first-person account for the specific season and incident. The cited material does not supply that proof.
How to read an AGT “fake” claim responsibly
- Identify the exact claim. Is it about an act, a judge’s reaction, editing, chronology, eligibility or the final result?
- Check the source. Official terms establish process and rights; producer comments establish presentation choices; a contestant report establishes that person’s account.
- Keep the scope narrow. A 2026 account about one taping cannot be presented as what happens to every contestant.
- Separate performance from framing. Edited context can make a moment feel spontaneous or linear without proving that the skill itself was fabricated.
- Check the season. Audition routes, terms, cast and format can change. The cited online terms are specifically for Season 21 and were updated October 23, 2025.
Bottom line on the “10 fake and 10 real” premise
America’s Got Talent is neither an untouched documentary of auditions nor demonstrably a fake competition. The supported conclusion is narrower: producers select acts and control submitted material, and the broadcast is edited and ordered for television. One reported contestant experience raises a specific question about prompted reactions, but it does not establish a universal practice. The available evidence cannot honestly support a definitive list of ten fabricated things or ten guaranteed spontaneous ones.
