Amazon’s redesigned Kindle Scribe and Kindle Scribe Colorsoft went on sale in the United States on December 10, 2025; Amazon had announced them on September 30. That launch date has passed. The front-lit monochrome Scribe starts at $499.99, while the color E Ink Scribe Colorsoft starts at $629.99. A third model, a Scribe without a front light, starts at $429.99. The practical choice is whether color annotations and illustrated reading are worth about $130 more than the standard front-lit model.
Three models, not just two
The 2025 Scribe family is a set of large-format reading and handwriting devices, rather than a range of general-purpose tablets. The key differences are display color and front lighting:

These are U.S. starting prices reported by Amazon; configurations, promotions and regional pricing can differ. Check the listing for the exact model and bundle before ordering. In particular, the no-front-light Scribe is a distinct, lower-cost configuration—not another name for the $499.99 front-lit Scribe. Amazon’s feature and pricing overview describes the models.
What changed in the 2025 Scribe?
The redesigned devices use an approximately 11-inch glare-free E Ink screen, up from 10.2 inches on the previous Scribe, and Amazon describes the new body as thinner and lighter. For the standard model, Amazon lists a thickness of 5.4 mm and weight of 400 g. Those are manufacturer specifications; verify the regional model’s details when comparing listings. Amazon also says writing and page turns are about 40% faster than on the prior generation. That is Amazon’s comparison, not an independent benchmark. Amazon’s launch announcement gives its design and performance claims, while the Associated Press report describes the larger screen.

The included pen attaches magnetically and does not need charging, according to Amazon. It supports writing, drawing and notebook editing. Confirm the contents of the particular bundle you are buying, especially if a listing combines the device with a cover or other accessories.
What Colorsoft adds—and what it does not
Colorsoft’s main advantage is practical rather than decorative: it lets readers write in color, mark up color documents and use color-coded highlights. Amazon specifies 10 pen colors and five highlighter colors. That may help when annotating textbooks, PDFs, charts or illustrated nonfiction, or when separating ideas in a notebook.

Color E Ink should not be mistaken for the saturated, fast-refreshing display of an LCD or OLED tablet. Color rendering is more muted, and the Scribe is designed around reading and handwriting—not video, demanding apps, gaming or broad multitasking. If nearly all your books and notes are monochrome, the $130 starting-price difference buys a capability you may rarely use. Amazon describes Colorsoft’s softer color presentation as easier on the eyes; that is product positioning, not a medical finding.
Notebook and reading software
Amazon has also promoted software tools for notebooks and reading. These include AI-assisted notebook search, conversion of handwriting into a script-style font, notebook organization and sharing, writing in books, and Smart Shapes for items such as lines, arrows, circles, triangles and rectangles. Amazon’s feature material discusses these tools across the Scribe experience; do not assume that a feature is exclusive to Colorsoft unless the specific product listing says so.

Amazon has also described reading tools called Story So Far and Ask This Book. Availability can depend on the device, software, region, language, internet access and whether a title is supported. Amazon has said some reading features are limited to supported Kindle books in the United States and may also be available in the Kindle iOS app. AI-generated summaries or answers should be treated as aids, not guaranteed error-free interpretations. A reviewer at Tom’s Guide reported occasional errors in early AI testing; that is one review, not proof of a universal failure rate.
Which Scribe makes sense for you?
- Pick the front-lit monochrome Scribe if your books and notes are mostly black and white, you want a large writing surface, and you expect to read in varied lighting. It preserves the Scribe’s core reading-and-notebook use without paying for color.
- Pick Colorsoft if color is part of the work: you regularly annotate diagrams or color PDFs, read comics or illustrated books, or rely on colored handwriting and highlights. Its premium is easiest to justify when that workflow happens often.
- Consider the no-front-light Scribe if the lower starting price matters most and you will use it where ambient light is adequate. The missing front light is a real usability trade-off for night reading, not merely a cosmetic difference.
- Consider a tablet instead if you need a broad app library, vivid color, video, web tools or high-performance drawing. An iPad Air with Apple Pencil, for example, offers a wider app and media environment; a writing-focused device such as the reMarkable Paper Pro is another comparison point, though it is not a substitute for Kindle’s book ecosystem. Compare current official prices and accessory costs directly, as they vary.
Should an existing Scribe owner upgrade?
For someone satisfied with an older Scribe’s black-and-white reading and writing, the new model is not an automatic upgrade. The case is stronger if you specifically want color annotation, the larger screen, the claimed speed improvement or the newer software tools. If the existing device already handles your books and notes well, color alone may not justify replacing it—especially if you would use the Scribe mainly as an e-reader.

Also distinguish this lineup from Amazon’s redesigned monochrome Scribe announced in 2024. The devices discussed here are the next Scribe family, announced in September 2025 and released in the U.S. that December. Amazon’s 2024 announcement covers the earlier generation.
Availability and buying checks
December 10 was the U.S. purchase date reported for the new front-lit Scribe and Colorsoft; it was not a universal worldwide release date. Other markets may have different availability, prices, color or storage choices, and delivery estimates. As of August 2026, treat the launch as historical and check your local Amazon store or authorized retailer for current stock and pricing. The September launch coverage from TechCrunch reported the December 10 U.S. purchase date.
Before checkout, confirm the exact model (especially whether it has a front light), storage capacity, what is included in the box, and the return terms. Do not assume an AI feature works with every book or in every region, or that an introductory subscription offer applies to every configuration.
