Devin Singleton is the Panhandle PBS producer and filmmaker behind The Space They Left, a three-part documentary series about suicide-loss grief, survivor risk, suicide contagion and postvention. Singleton’s brother died by suicide, and immediate help from the Amarillo Area LOSS Team showed him how much practical support families may not know exists. That experience became the starting point for a research-based series that treats suicide loss as both a personal bereavement and a public-health concern.
The episodes premiered September 10, 17 and 24, 2026. Official viewing is offered through Panhandle PBS, PBS.org, the PBS app, the Panhandle PBS YouTube channel and PBS Passport; availability can change, so check those services for the current listing.

Singleton has called it a “quiet resource” and said its presence at his brother’s home became central to the series’ vision. In a statement reported by HPPR, he summarized the personal stakes this way: “Postvention is prevention. I’m proof of that. It’s why I’m still here, and why I made this series.”

What is The Space They Left about?
The Space They Left examines what happens after a suicide: the immediate crisis, the distinctive grief that follows, the increased risk some survivors carry, and the community systems known as postvention. The series is explicitly research-based and frames suicide loss as both a private trauma and a public-health issue.
Contributors include forensic suicidologist Dr. Frank Campbell, the American Association of Suicidology, suicide-loss survivors, the Amarillo Area LOSS Team, city officials, Amarillo Public Health and the Panhandle Behavioral Health Alliance. Dr. Jenna Maynard Baker, CEO of the American Association of Suicidology, is also identified as a contributor by Amarillo College.

“Postvention” refers to organized support after a suicide. It can include immediate outreach, peer support, grief counseling, practical guidance and coordination among health, civic and community organizations. The series argues that connecting survivors to those resources can reduce isolation and strengthen prevention efforts.

What is suicide contagion?
In the series, suicide contagion describes the increased risk that can follow exposure to a suicide, particularly for people already affected by a loss or struggling with suicidal thoughts. Contagion and Connection pairs that risk with the protective role of connection: peer groups and trained responders give survivors a place to talk about trauma and grief without having to navigate it alone.

Discussion of contagion should never include graphic method details or imply that every survivor will respond in the same way. How can a LOSS Team help after a suicide?
LOSS stands for Local Outreach to Suicide Survivors. A LOSS Team offers specialized, peer-informed contact after a suicide, often helping a family understand what has happened, locate grief and mental-health support, and find others who have lived through a similar loss.
The Amarillo Area LOSS Team’s early response to Singleton’s family is the example that motivated the series. The final episode uses Dr. Frank Campbell’s LOSS Team model to show how a community can build a repeatable response instead of leaving families to search for help on their own.

Why does Singleton call postvention prevention?
The phrase captures the series’ central argument: support after a suicide can affect what happens next. Timely outreach may reduce isolation, connect survivors with care and peer support, and help communities recognize warning signs and strengthen prevention systems. It is not a promise that one intervention eliminates risk; it is a case for making postvention a planned part of public-health work.
By placing survivors alongside researchers, responders and civic partners, The Space They Left presents postvention as an ongoing community responsibility rather than a single counseling appointment. That is the space Singleton’s film seeks to fill.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is The Space They Left a mental-health treatment program?
No. It is a documentary series that explains suicide-loss experiences, risk and support systems. Viewers should use qualified clinicians, crisis services or local LOSS organizations for personal guidance.
How should journalists and viewers discuss suicide contagion safely?
Avoid graphic descriptions, speculation about motives and language that romanticizes or sensationalizes a death. Focus on help-seeking, recovery, prevention and verified resources such as 988.
Can someone outside the Texas Panhandle use a LOSS Team?
LOSS Teams are local or regional, so services vary by area. The National LOSS Team and the American Association of Suicidology can help a survivor identify a nearby program.
What if a family member refuses grief counseling after a suicide?
Offer practical choices without pressure, such as a peer-support meeting, a call with a LOSS Team or a primary-care appointment. Continued, respectful contact can keep a path to help open while the person processes the loss.
