This weekend guide is a historical snapshot of Friday, Aug. 2 through Sunday, Aug. 4, 2024. It gathers nine then-new releases and returning favorites across Netflix, Prime Video, Hulu, HBO/Max and premium digital stores: the House of the Dragon season 2 finale, four other series, and four films. The listings and services below describe that 2024 weekend, not guaranteed October 2026 availability. Streaming rights, episode schedules, storefront prices and regional catalogs change, so search each title in your local app before planning a watch.
If you want a major event, HBO and Max scheduled the House of the Dragon finale for Sunday at 9 p.m. ET. For a complete season to start immediately, Netflix had A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, Unstable season 2 and Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color; Prime Video had Batman: Caped Crusader; and Hulu had Futurama season 12 and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. A Quiet Place: Day One and Maxxxine were listed as premium purchases through Amazon or Apple rather than included subscription streams.
What are the nine picks in this Aug. 2–4, 2024 weekend guide?
The list mixes serialized television, animation, a theatrical prequel, a science-fiction reboot and a horror sequel. The table is an at-a-glance record of the services and access types attached to the 2024 listings.

Because this was a dated weekend list, treat every platform label as a historical availability note. A title can move between subscription services, become a separate rental or purchase, or disappear in a particular country.

Which television series should I watch this weekend?
Choose according to whether you want a scheduled event, a mystery you can binge, a fresh Batman origin, a family workplace comedy or an animated science-fiction season.
House of the Dragon season 2 finale — HBO and Max
The second season’s closing episode was scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 4, at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and Max. The story reaches a major point in the Targaryen civil war: Rhaenyra is recruiting dragonriders, while Daemon’s allegiance remains uncertain. That combination makes the finale the weekend’s appointment viewing rather than a casual standalone episode.
Start with the earlier season 2 episodes if you need the political and family context. The episode’s broadcast time is the one supplied for the 2024 U.S. schedule; neither the time nor the service label should be assumed for another country or a later date.

This BBC adaptation of Holly Jackson’s popular novel centers on 17-year-old true-crime enthusiast Pip Fitz-Amobi. For a school project, Pip reopens the investigation into Andie Bell’s murder because she doubts the accusation against Andie’s boyfriend, Sal Singh. She works with Sal’s brother, Ravi, to search for the real culprit.
The premise gives the series two entry points: a coming-of-age investigation and a layered murder mystery. Readers who want the source story can pair the Netflix adaptation with Jackson’s novel, while viewers who prefer to avoid knowing the solution can watch first and read afterward.

Batman: Caped Crusader — Prime Video
Bruce Timm, co-creator of the 1990s Batman: The Animated Series, leads this new cartoon. It places Bruce Wayne at the beginning of his vigilante career in a post-Depression, noir-pulp Gotham marked by Art Deco design, criminal activity and police corruption.
The setting signals a different emphasis from a modern, technology-heavy superhero show. Expect the early formation of Batman’s methods and identity against a stylized city where institutional corruption is part of the conflict. Prime Video was the service listed for the 2024 weekend.

Unstable season 2 — Netflix
The Rob Lowe workplace comedy returns to biotech mogul Ellis Dragon after he survives an attempted boardroom ouster. Ellis turns his attention to his son Jackson, subjecting him to challenges and mind games while a newcomer threatens to disrupt the family business.
This season’s central engine is the collision between a powerful founder’s eccentric management style and a son trying to navigate both family pressure and corporate stakes. Since it is a second season, viewers unfamiliar with Ellis and Jackson’s relationship may want to begin with season 1 rather than treating the new episodes as a self-contained story.
Futurama season 12 — Hulu
The Hulu season continues the adventures of Fry, Leela, Bender and Professor Farnsworth. Its listed story ideas include deadly birthday-party games, Bender’s ancestral robot village, artificial-intelligence friends and a return to Fry and Leela’s romance.

- Fire TV Ambient Experience lets you display over 2,000 pieces of museum-quality art and photography.
Those premises point to the show’s usual range: an isolated comic idea one week, character mythology the next, and an ongoing relationship thread alongside both. The 2024 listing identified Hulu as the subscription service for season 12.

Two films were listed with a subscription service and two as premium purchases. That distinction affects whether you need an active catalog subscription or a separate transaction.
A Quiet Place: Day One — premium purchase
This prequel follows Samira, a terminally ill cancer patient, during an alien attack on Manhattan. Meteors bring creatures that hunt by sound, and Sam joins Eric, an English law student, as they try to escape the city.
The 2024 guide listed purchase access through Amazon or Apple. That is different from an included subscription stream: you would need to confirm the current purchase or rental option, price and local storefront before paying. The film’s premise also makes sound the core survival rule, so it works best for viewers looking for a tense, contained escape story rather than a conventional monster-action spectacle.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes — Hulu
Set 300 years after the previous film, this fourth reboot installment shows apes as the dominant species while Caesar’s teachings have largely been forgotten. A young chimpanzee named Noa encounters a human named Mae and is drawn into a conflict with the coastal clan led by Proximus Caesar.

The time jump means the film introduces a changed society rather than simply continuing the earlier characters’ immediate storyline. Its conflict is built around competing interpretations of history, leadership and the place of humans, with Hulu listed as the 2024 subscription home.
Maxxxine — premium purchase
Ti West’s third film after X and Pearl follows Mia Goth’s Maxine Minx as she pursues a mainstream acting breakthrough in 1980s Hollywood. A killer targeting young starlets threatens that ambition.
The film combines an entertainment-industry climb with a slasher investigation. The weekend guide listed Amazon or Apple for purchase access, not an included subscription stream. Check whether your local storefront offers a purchase, a rental or a later subscription edition before assuming the 2024 option still applies.
Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color — Netflix
Netflix’s listing paired Godzilla Minus One with Minus Color, a black-and-white version refined shot by shot rather than created by simply applying a filter. Director Takashi Yamazaki explained the creative goal by saying the monochrome presentation is scarier “because it feels like it’s happening in real life.”
The choice is therefore more than a color toggle: the image was individually adjusted to create a different visual and emotional emphasis. The 2024 guide also cited a 98% Rotten Tomatoes score, but that figure was a dated review snapshot without a publication year or original score citation, so it should not be treated as a permanent rating.

How should I choose among the nine titles?
Use the mood and time you have rather than trying to watch the list in release order.
- For a Sunday-night event: reserve the scheduled House of the Dragon finale and verify the local start time.
- For a mystery with a young investigator: choose A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder.
- For noir animation: start Batman: Caped Crusader.
- For a comic family-and-business conflict: pick Unstable season 2.
- For animated science-fiction variety: try Futurama season 12.
- For survival horror in a city under attack: select A Quiet Place: Day One, subject to purchase availability.
- For a far-future ape civilization: watch Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.
- For 1980s Hollywood slasher tension: choose Maxxxine, subject to purchase availability.
- For a stark monster-film presentation: watch Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color.
What should I verify before pressing play?
First, search the exact title in the service’s app or website for your country. Catalog rights can differ by territory, and a listing that was accurate for Aug. 2–4, 2024 may have moved by the time you read this. Second, distinguish an included subscription episode from a premium transaction: the two titles listed through Amazon or Apple were purchase options, while the Netflix, Prime Video, Hulu and HBO/Max entries were service listings in that historical snapshot.
For the finale, check both the date and the time zone because the cited 9 p.m. ET slot was tied to the U.S. Sunday broadcast. For films, confirm whether the storefront now labels access as purchase, rental or subscription; those labels, prices and expiration rules are separate from the film’s original weekend placement.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are age ratings available for these nine titles?
The weekend listing does not provide a complete set of age ratings. Check the rating and content advisories shown by your local broadcaster, streaming service or digital storefront before watching with children, especially for the horror and murder-mystery titles.
Can I watch the season finales and new seasons without earlier episodes?
You can start any title where your service permits, but the two season-based entries and the House of the Dragon finale continue ongoing character and political arcs. Watching preceding episodes will supply context that a single finale or later-season episode cannot.
Why might a title appear in my app under a different service from this list?
Streaming contracts are territory- and date-specific. A service can hold a 2024 U.S. listing while another country uses a different platform, or a later deal can move the title; search the exact title locally rather than relying on the historical label.
Does premium purchase access include a physical disc?
No. The listed Amazon or Apple option refers to digital storefront access, not a guaranteed DVD or Blu-ray. Physical editions, if offered, are separate products with their own release dates and regional availability.
