Jake Gyllenhaal’s 2024 Road House is better than the 1989 film if you want a contemporary action movie built around a modern fighter, vivid Florida Keys scenery and up-close combat. Those choices give director Doug Liman’s reworking its own identity rather than simply reproducing Patrick Swayze’s cult favorite. They are not universal improvements: viewers who prize the original’s peculiar mix of sturdy action and 1980s camp may prefer it. Here are eight ways the remake makes a persuasive case for itself.
1. Dalton is reimagined as a present-day action hero
The remake makes Dalton an ex-UFC fighter with a dark past, bringing a recognizable modern combat-sports identity into the story. That background makes his capacity for violence part of the premise, not just a quality revealed when trouble finds him. It is a sharp update for viewers who want an action lead shaped by the world of contemporary fighting, though it does not automatically make his character arc stronger.
About Amazon’s announcement describes the film as based on the 1989 screenplay, while Prime Video’s listing identifies Dalton as an ex-UFC fighter who takes a bouncer job at a Florida Keys roadhouse.
2. The Florida Keys give the story a fresh visual identity
Instead of returning to the original’s setting, the remake places its roadhouse in the Florida Keys. The tropical backdrop creates a brighter, more exposed environment for the brawls and gives the film a distinct sense of place. The location is an update, not proof that the remake’s world is more believable: its appeal is the contrast between a sunlit destination and the violence gathering around the bar.

3. The fights use a more immersive action style
Liman’s remake leans into kinetic coverage that brings the audience close to the combatants. The Associated Press singled out its point-of-view camera work and bottle-smashing stunts; TIME also noted how the camera moves with the fighters. For viewers who enjoy disorienting, close-range action, that approach gives the brawls an immediacy that feels very different from a more classical action-film presentation.
That style is a matter of taste. Its movement and impact can make a fight feel visceral, but viewers who prefer clean geography and a steadier view of choreography may find the same choices less satisfying.

4. Gyllenhaal makes Dalton’s physical presence part of the performance
TIME’s review highlights Gyllenhaal’s physicality and screen presence. In the film, that presence helps sell Dalton as someone whose size, composure and movement affect a room before a fight begins. The performance makes the character’s imposing quality visible without needing to treat him as a real-world fighter or make claims about how the actor prepared.

For a viewer drawn to action stars who command the frame, Gyllenhaal offers a different kind of Dalton from Swayze: contemporary in presentation, but still built around the character’s ability to change the temperature of a confrontation.
5. The supporting cast brings a different ensemble energy
The remake surrounds Dalton with a new group of characters, played by Daniela Melchior, Billy Magnussen, Jessica Williams, Joaquim de Almeida and Conor McGregor, among others named in the Prime Video cast listing. That changed ensemble helps the film stand apart from the original rather than asking viewers to measure every role against its 1989 counterpart.

Whether this cast is better is subjective; the defensible advantage is that the remake has its own mix of performers and personalities. It gives returning fans new dynamics to watch instead of relying on familiar faces or direct imitation.
6. It reimagines the original instead of chasing its cult magic
The 1989 Road House has an unusual personality: its action-film construction sits alongside outlandish choices and a tone that can be read as camp. TIME argues that this peculiar combination is hard to reproduce. The remake’s strength is that it does not need to recreate that exact oddity to work as a contemporary action movie.
If you want a reworking with its own approach rather than a chain of callbacks, the remake’s independence is a benefit. If the original’s offbeat character is precisely what you love, the change may feel like a loss instead. That difference is central to the mixed response: Rotten Tomatoes’ review excerpts include criticism that the remake loses the original’s magic, while The New Yorker describes the update as more timid despite its violence.

7. The conflict updates the story’s local stakes
In TIME’s account of the remake, Dalton is drawn into protecting a Black-owned Florida Keys business from a drug-dealing, hyper-capitalist antagonist. The threatened roadhouse gives the conflict a local-business dimension, connecting the setting to what is at risk in the story rather than using the Keys only as scenery.
That is a change in emphasis, not evidence that the screenplay is deeper or more realistic. Its value is the contemporary frame: the fight over the bar also concerns who gets to control a community business.
8. It works as a standalone modern action watch
The 2024 film premiered on Prime Video on March 21, 2024, and the platform has an official title listing. That makes it easy for viewers with access to the film in their market to watch the remake as its own action feature, whether or not they have seen the original. Catalog access varies by region and can change, so check the local listing rather than assuming availability everywhere.

Where the 1989 original still has the advantage
These eight points make the remake a strong choice for viewers seeking modern action grammar, a new setting and a reinvention of Dalton. They do not settle which film is better overall. The original’s gonzo appeal—the mix of conventional action craft with oddball, distinctly 1980s personality—is exactly what some viewers and critics think the new film cannot reproduce. TIME praised the remake’s unruly energy, but contemporary reactions were divided; a more polished update can still feel less singular than the movie it revisits.
The fairest comparison is therefore about priorities: choose the 2024 version for its contemporary fighter premise and immersive, high-impact presentation; choose the 1989 version if you want the stranger cult-film character that made the story memorable in the first place.
