Spoilers: The January 29, 2025 One Chicago crossover is a three-episode emergency, not a standalone special. In Chicago Fire, Chicago Med and Chicago P.D., a deliberate gas explosion puts a building and the subway tunnel below it at risk. Stella Kidd and Adam Ruzek are trapped underground, while Sergeant Trudy Platt is shot and brought to Gaffney in critical condition. Platt survives, Kidd and Ruzek are rescued, and the investigation exposes building security worker Lauren Bates as an insider and Platt’s shooter.
The event’s installments aired in this order: Chicago Fire Season 13, “In The Trenches: Part I”; Chicago Med Season 10, “In The Trenches: Part II”; and Chicago P.D. Season 12, “In The Trenches: Part III.” TV Guide identifies the Fire hour as the opener and P.D. as the conclusion; TV Insider’s January 29 recap also covers the event’s broadcast-night story. For the clearest account of the connected plot, follow the episodes in that order.
The 10 key reveals, pairings and twists
This is an editorial guide to ten major turns, not an official ranking. The story moves from the scale of the emergency to the characters caught inside it, then to the medical and investigative consequences.
1. A gas explosion turns a response into a citywide emergency
The crossover begins with a gas explosion at a building. Firefighters, paramedics, doctors and police are drawn into the response, with the danger quickly reaching beyond the initial blast. The event’s shared premise is laid out in TV Guide’s January 29, 2025 feature.

2. The threat extends into the subway tunnel
The danger is not confined to the building: the blast threatens the subway tunnel below it. That underground hazard turns the rescue into a race with consequences for people trapped beneath the scene, while Fire and Med handle rescue and triage and P.D. works to identify those responsible. One Chicago Center’s January 30 recap also summarizes the explosion and the linked threat.
3. Severide recognizes the fire was intentional
Kelly Severide recognizes signs that the fire was deliberately set and gives police descriptions of suspects. That observation connects the emergency response to the investigation: the firefighters are not only managing a dangerous scene, but also helping police understand what happened. The sources identify Bates as one participant in a wider group, not the sole attacker.

4. Kidd and Ruzek become unlikely partners underground
A tunnel collapse leaves Stella Kidd and Adam Ruzek trapped together on a disabled train. They are not an established working pair before the event, so their predicament creates one of the crossover’s most unexpected character combinations: two first responders from different departments forced to rely on each other while help is organized above them. They survive and are rescued as part of the combined response.
5. Severide and Burgess worry from above
While Kidd and Ruzek are underground, Severide and Kim Burgess are among those working above ground and trying to reach their partners. Their scenes give the rescue an emotional dimension as well as an operational one: each has to keep working amid uncertainty about someone close to them.

6. Platt is shot while pursuing suspects
Trudy Platt is shot in the back while pursuing suspects. She is taken to Gaffney in critical condition, shifting the focus from the danger at the scene to the effort to keep her alive. TV Insider’s recap details the injury and the hospital crisis.
7. Mouch and Charles face Platt’s high-risk intervention
Platt flatlines, and Ripley and Lenox use an experimental cooling approach to buy time for treatment. The storyline is fictional drama, not medical guidance. Dr. Daniel Charles supports Randall “Mouch” McHolland as he faces the possibility of losing Platt, making the hospital scenes a pairing grounded in emotional support rather than the rescue operation above ground.

8. Platt wakes and gives investigators a useful clue
Platt survives and later provides information that helps the investigation and the effort to rescue those still in danger. Her return to consciousness changes her role from patient to witness: even after being gravely wounded, she contributes to resolving the crisis.
9. Lenox helps without abandoning her boundaries
Dr. Caitlin Lenox finds a way to assist the police without simply setting aside her own professional judgment. TV Guide highlights this as a distinct character beat: her contribution matters because it balances the urgent request for help against the limits she is unwilling to ignore. It also shows the crossover connecting departments through more than emergency logistics.

10. Bates is exposed as the insider and Platt’s shooter
The investigation reveals that Lauren Bates, a former police officer working security at the building, is an insider and the person who shot Platt. Bates says she has mesothelioma and wanted compensation. Voight takes her into custody rather than allowing her to die by suicide. The recaps describe her as part of a wider group behind the attack, so the reveal does not establish her as its only participant.

The central pairings are about cooperation, danger and support—not romance. They also show how the three shows share a world: characters with existing relationships carry the emotional stakes, while less familiar combinations create new ways to solve the crisis.

Does Platt die after being shot?
No. Platt survives. She is critically injured, flatlines at Gaffney and receives an experimental cooling intervention from Ripley and Lenox. She later wakes and provides information that helps the investigation and rescue.
How are Kidd and Ruzek rescued?
A tunnel collapse traps Kidd and Ruzek on a disabled train beneath the emergency. They survive and are rescued through the combined response above ground. The available recaps do not establish more specific technical rescue mechanics, so it would be misleading to add them.
Where to watch the three episodes
Peacock’s crossover guide lists the viewing order as Fire, Med, then P.D.. NBCUniversal’s 2025–26 schedule announcement says new One Chicago episodes are available on Peacock the day after they air. That announcement describes the then-current schedule; it does not establish present availability in every territory, so check Peacock’s local catalogue for these older episodes.
