For a quick answer to “What can I watch tonight?”, start with JustWatch to filter by the streaming services you already use, then check a second site for recommendations or reviews. No single site does everything: some help you find a title, some judge its reception, and some confirm where it is available. The availability examples below use the United States; catalogs and features vary by country and change over time.
This list compares each service by the decision it helps you make—not by a universal score. Most offer free discovery features, but that does not mean the film or show is free to watch.

JustWatch is the most practical first stop when the immediate question is not merely “What is good?” but “What can I watch with the subscriptions I already pay for?” Its U.S. catalog covers subscription, free, ad-supported, rental, and purchase options. On its movie pages, filters can narrow results by provider, genre, release year, price, rating, runtime, production country, and age rating. You can also limit discovery to services you use and keep a combined watchlist.

For example, someone with Netflix, Hulu, and Prime Video could filter for thrillers, set a runtime limit, and exclude titles that require a rental. Check whether a result is included with a subscription, free with ads, or available only to rent, buy, or access through an add-on. The word “available” does not always mean “included in your plan.”
Availability is country-specific and can change quickly. Listings can lag behind a provider’s catalog or differ by plan. If a title appears to be included but cannot be found, search for it directly in the provider’s app and check the transaction type, add-on requirements, and region. JustWatch offers a paid Pro tier as well as free discovery; check its current service and upgrade information for features and terms in your country.
2. IMDb: best for broad, personalized mainstream recommendations
IMDb is useful when you want a wide entertainment database as well as suggestions. Its What to Watch hub includes areas such as Top Picks, Fan Favorites, popular titles, and recommendations from your Watchlist. IMDb says its personalized recommendations draw on ratings and Watchlist activity, comparing your behavior with that of people with similar tastes. It can also explain which saved or rated titles influenced a recommendation.

To make those suggestions more useful, rate or save titles you genuinely liked and disliked, mark films and shows you have watched where that feature is available, and keep your Watchlist reasonably current. IMDb also makes it easy to follow a trail from an actor, director, franchise, genre, or title to related credits and user reviews. Its Watchlist can be sorted by rating or popularity.

IMDb’s 1–10 rating is an aggregate of registered users’ ratings, not a professional critics’ score or a tailored prediction of your enjoyment. Popularity and a high score can help build a shortlist, but they do not account for the factors that may matter most to you—tone, pacing, runtime, subtitles, or content. Use IMDb for breadth and context, not as a verdict. Its ratings guidance also explains limitations of its charts.
3. Letterboxd: best for film discovery through people and lists
Letterboxd is a film-focused social service for keeping a diary, rating and reviewing films, following other viewers, and exploring themed lists. Its strength is not simply a score: it is the trail of human recommendations around a film. A list might focus on a director, country, era, movement, mood, or a highly specific theme. Reviews can describe style, emotional effect, and pacing in ways a star rating cannot.
Start with a movie or filmmaker you love, then browse lists and profiles from people whose tastes seem compatible with yours. Letterboxd can be especially helpful for finding older, international, independent, arthouse, or cult films that do not dominate mainstream streaming homepages. The service’s own FAQ explains film diaries and watched-film profiles.
Letterboxd is primarily for films, so it is a less natural choice for someone choosing a series or tracking episodes. Its engaged film community may also rate a title differently from a general audience. Lists are user-made and vary in quality, freshness, and intent. Watchlist availability alerts distinguish streaming, rental, and purchase, using JustWatch data; Letterboxd says updates can lag by up to 24 hours. Treat those alerts as a useful lead, then verify the listing in the provider’s app.

4. Rotten Tomatoes: best for a quick critics-versus-audience check
Rotten Tomatoes is useful once you have a candidate and want a fast sense of how critics and audiences reacted. The Tomatometer reports the percentage of counted critic reviews judged positive. The Popcornmeter presents audience reaction separately. That split can reveal agreement—or a gap worth investigating.
The Tomatometer is not an average score out of 100. A 90% score means a high share of included reviews were judged positive; it does not mean critics gave the title an average grade of 90. A 70% title could have fewer, more enthusiastic reviews than a 90% title, depending on the reviews included. Rotten Tomatoes defines “Fresh” as at least 60% positive critic reviews and “Rotten” as below 60%; Certified Fresh has additional review-volume and Top Critic requirements. Its scoring explanation describes the distinctions.
Use the percentage as a shortcut, not a substitute for criticism. Review counts vary, audience responses can be affected by organized campaigns or differences among raters, and a broad consensus cannot tell you whether you will enjoy a title. If critics and audiences disagree, open a few reviews to see whether the difference concerns style, expectations, or something you care about. Rotten Tomatoes also offers at-home browsing with filters for genre, scores, and viewing providers.
5. Metacritic: best for a more graduated critical snapshot
Metacritic is another evaluation layer for a shortlist, especially if you want a critical score that distinguishes degrees of reception rather than a simple positive-versus-negative count. It aggregates selected professional reviews into a weighted Metascore and shows individual publication reviews; a separate user score lets you compare audience response. Its movie and TV sections cover both formats.

A Metascore is not an objective measurement of quality. It reflects the publications and reviews included in the aggregation, and a weighted number can look more precise than the underlying judgments warrant. A new, niche, or less-reviewed title may have few reviews or no score. Read the review summaries and individual criticism, and do not treat the Metascore and user score as interchangeable or directly comparable with IMDb or Rotten Tomatoes.
6. Reelgood: best as a streaming-first alternative
Reelgood is another way to browse movies and television across streaming services, search catalogs, and discover by categories such as genre and popularity. It is relevant if you prefer to explore what is on services rather than begin with a known title. Its data materials describe a unified catalog and availability information.
Reelgood and JustWatch serve overlapping needs, but neither should be assumed to have universally better availability data. Provider coverage differs by country, catalogs change, and services may update their listings at different times. Compare current coverage for your region, and verify a title inside the streaming provider’s app before subscribing, renting, or pressing play.

TasteDive starts from something you already like and suggests related entertainment. Enter a film, show, creator, or another interest to explore connections across categories such as movies, books, music, and games. It can be useful when ordinary genre filters keep producing the same familiar titles or when you want to follow an unusual interest into a different medium.

Think of its results as ideas, not final recommendations: similarity can be broad or surprising, and where-to-watch information is not its main strength. Check a suggested title’s details and reception elsewhere, then use JustWatch or Reelgood to check availability. Because the service’s interface and features may change, confirm what is currently offered before relying on a particular tool or workflow.
Which site should you use?
- “I want something I can watch tonight on services I already have.” Start with JustWatch; try Reelgood as another catalog browser.
- “I want mainstream recommendations based on what I like.” Use IMDb and give its recommendations useful ratings and Watchlist activity to work with.
- “I want a film recommendation from people with interesting taste.” Browse Letterboxd lists, reviews, and profiles.
- “I need a quick read on whether critics and audiences agree.” Check Rotten Tomatoes, then open reviews if the scores differ or seem unpersuasive.
- “I want more nuance in professional reviews.” Use Metacritic as a critical snapshot and read the included reviews.
- “I want something unusual that connects to a favorite.” Generate ideas with TasteDive, then validate them elsewhere.
- “I need both film and TV discovery.” JustWatch, IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic, and Reelgood cover both; Letterboxd is primarily film-focused.
A practical workflow for choosing something tonight
- Start with the constraint that matters. If access or cost matters most, open JustWatch or Reelgood. Select only services you actually have and choose movie or TV.
- Narrow the field. Filter by genre, runtime, release period, age rating, or price. Save three to five candidates rather than browsing indefinitely.
- Check the kind of signal you need. Use Rotten Tomatoes for a quick critic/audience split, Metacritic for a weighted critics’ snapshot, IMDb for broad ratings and title information, or Letterboxd for film reviews and community lists.
- Check personal fit, not just a score. Look for clues about pacing, tone, content, subtitles, and length. A high average cannot know what you are in the mood for.
- Confirm the listing in the provider’s own app. Make sure it is included in your plan rather than a rental, purchase, add-on, or free-with-ads option.
For film discovery beyond familiar streaming recommendations, start with a favorite in TasteDive, follow promising results into Letterboxd lists and reviews, and then check JustWatch for current U.S. availability. For a group, have each person submit a short list, remove titles nobody can access, and use runtime, genre, and age rating as tie-breakers. If three choices remain and no one agrees, picking one at random may be faster than opening a fourth site.
When sites disagree or a result goes wrong
“It says it is streaming, but I cannot find it.”
Check that the guide is set to your country and that the result is not rental-only, purchase-only, limited to an add-on channel, or available only with ads or a particular plan tier. Recent removals and data delays can also cause mismatches. Search the title directly in the provider app; try the original title, release year, lead actor, or director if it does not appear.

That is not a contradiction: the score summarizes other people’s reactions, not your taste. Consider whether the title’s tone, pace, runtime, violence, subtitles, or ending style suited you. Letterboxd reviews can give film-focused context, while IMDb’s parental guide can help flag content.
“The critic and audience scores disagree.”
Do not average unlike scores into a made-up universal rating. Stronger critic response alongside weaker audience response may signal a specialized or challenging title; the reverse may point to accessible entertainment critics valued differently. That is a prompt to read a few reviews and decide which audience’s reasons matter to you.
“The title is missing or recommendations keep repeating.”
A title may be listed under an alternate name, lack a qualifying release, be a special or episode, or fall outside a service’s coverage. Search by original title, year, actor, or director. To broaden repetitive suggestions, rate more titles where supported, mark watched items, clear stale Watchlist entries, change country, decade, language, or runtime filters, and try a less obvious reference title. Community lists can expose you to different paths than an algorithmic homepage.
