Recommended Free Tools
The best movie app for your Windows 11 PC depends on whether you want a broad paid catalog, family franchises, current television, rentals, or genuinely free viewing. Netflix is the safest all-purpose subscription pick; Prime Video offers the most flexible mix of included titles, rentals, and purchases; Tubi is the strongest no-subscription option.
This is a U.S.-focused list of legal streaming and digital-entertainment services, not a list of local video players. All seven were listed for PC in Microsoft’s entertainment-app directory when checked, but “free” in the Microsoft Store means free to install—not necessarily free to watch. Check the current Microsoft Store listings before installing.

The ranking is an editorial judgment based on legal U.S. availability, Windows access, movie usefulness, cost transparency, and the difference between on-demand and linear-channel viewing. It is not a laboratory performance ranking.

Do I have to pay?
Yes. The application is free to download, but watching requires a Netflix plan. Use the official signup page to see the plans offered to your account; prices and plan features can change.
Why choose it
- Broad appeal for households that watch different kinds of films.
- Dedicated Windows access plus browser playback.
- Clear account and profile experience.
Important limitations
- There is no general free tier.
- Catalogs differ by country and licensed titles leave the service.
- Do not assume that every plan, browser, computer, or movie supports 4K or HDR.
Netflix documents Windows 11 support, browser limits, and quality requirements at its Windows help page. Ultra HD 4K requires a qualifying plan, current Windows 11 updates, compatible hardware and display, at least 15 Mbps, and suitable DRM conditions. Some devices may need Microsoft’s paid HEVC Video Extensions codec, and external displays may need HDCP 2.2. Those requirements apply to Netflix’s documented playback path, not automatically to other services.
2. Prime Video — best value and rental flexibility
Prime Video suits viewers who want subscription streaming but also need a legal way to rent or buy a particular newer film instead of waiting for it to enter a subscription catalog.
Do I have to pay?
An Amazon account is required. A title may be included with a subscription, offered as a rental, or sold for purchase. Always read the title page’s included, rent, or buy label before pressing play. Browse the official Prime Video storefront.

Who should skip it
Skip it if you want every title covered by one simple monthly catalog. Availability, interface details, advertising, and included titles vary by market.
3. Disney+ — best for families and franchises
Disney+ is the focused choice for households built around Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic programming.
Rank #2
- FULL HD IPS DISPLAY - Enjoy vibrant, crystal-clear images with 178-degree wide-viewing angles
- AMD RYZEN 3 30 PROCESSOR - Everyday performance you can count on; Multitask, stream, game casually, and edit photos smoothly with responsive power and vibrant HDR visuals

- STORAGE AND MEMORY - 512 GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD offers fast speed and efficient storage; and 8 GB LPDDR5 RAM memory boosts performance with higher bandwidth
Do I have to pay?
Yes, unless access comes through an eligible bundle or promotion. Plans, advertising, and regional catalogs vary. See Disney+’s official service page for current options.
Why choose it
- Strong concentration of recognizable family and franchise brands.
- Simple choice when children or a particular film universe drive the decision.
Who should skip it
Choose another service if you need the broadest mix of unrelated adult films; Disney+’s strength is its brand ecosystem rather than universal catalog breadth.
4. Hulu — best for movies plus current U.S. television
Hulu makes sense when movies are only half your viewing: its main U.S. proposition combines films with current-season television and Hulu Originals.
Do I have to pay?
Yes. Standard streaming plans, bundles, and Hulu + Live TV are different products, with different advertising and channel features. Hulu’s U.S. page showed a Disney+ and Hulu bundle at $12.99 per month with ads and a premium bundle at $19.99 per month on August 18, 2026; treat those figures and contents as changeable. Check Hulu’s current plans.
Why choose it
- Useful for a household that wants current TV as well as movies.
- Bundles can reduce the need to maintain separate subscriptions.
Main limitation
Hulu is primarily U.S.-focused. Do not treat its catalog, app availability, or pricing as universal outside the United States.
5. Apple TV — best for Apple Originals and rentals
Apple TV is a good fit for viewers following Apple’s original films or wanting a storefront-style choice between subscription programming, rentals, and purchases.

Do I have to pay?
It depends on the selection. Some programming is subscription-based, while individual films may be rented or purchased. Confirm the transaction shown on the title page. Start at Apple TV’s official service page.
Why choose it
- Strong fit for Apple Originals fans.
- One destination for subscription viewing and digital transactions.
Main limitation
Its subscription library is smaller and more focused than the largest general-purpose services, and the exact Windows app experience can change. Use the official website if the Store app is unavailable or lacks a feature you need.
6. Tubi — best free, ad-supported option
Tubi is the clearest choice when avoiding another monthly bill matters more than getting the newest releases.
Do I have to pay?
No subscription is required for its core service. Viewing is supported by advertising, and the catalog rotates. Visit Tubi for current availability.

- Expect commercial breaks.
- Selection and availability change by region and licensing agreement.
- It should complement, not replace, a premium service when you want major new releases.
7. Pluto TV — best free channel-style experience
Pluto TV is best when you enjoy turning on a channel and browsing what is playing, with on-demand titles available alongside the linear guide.
Do I have to pay?
No subscription is required for its core service, but advertising is part of the model. See Pluto TV for current channels and on-demand offerings.

How it differs from Tubi
Tubi is primarily an on-demand library. Pluto TV adds scheduled channels, so you have less control when watching linear programming and may need to wait for a particular film or channel slot.

For apps listed in the Microsoft Store:
- Open Start and select Microsoft Store.
- Search the exact service name.
- Open the official listing and check the publisher and description.
- Select Get or Install.
- Open the app from the Start menu.
- Sign in or create an account if the service requires one.
For Netflix, the documented path is Start > Microsoft Store > search Netflix > select Netflix > Install, then open it and choose Sign In. Netflix supports Windows 10 and later through its app or a supported browser; Microsoft Edge must be installed for the Windows app. If a Store listing is missing, use the service’s official website in Microsoft Edge rather than a similarly named third-party download.
App or browser: which should you use?
A native app gives you a Start-menu shortcut and a television-like interface, and it may expose features that differ from the website. A browser usually updates more easily and is a practical fallback when an app is outdated or unavailable. Neither format automatically guarantees better picture quality or lower resource use.
Fix common Windows 11 playback problems
The app cannot be found
- Check your Windows and Microsoft account region.
- Search the exact official name.
- Try the provider’s website in Microsoft Edge.
- Do not install unofficial “free movie” clones.
The app installs but will not play
- Run Windows Update and update the Microsoft Store apps.
- Update your graphics driver.
- Verify the account, subscription, and title entitlement.
- Check the network connection, date, and time.
- In a browser, allow protected content/DRM.
- Temporarily test without a VPN, proxy, antivirus filter, or restricted corporate network.
- Disconnect other monitors if only one display fails.
Video is stuck at low resolution
Check whether your plan includes HD or 4K, whether the browser has a resolution limit, whether a codec is missing, and whether the display, cable, and DRM requirements are satisfied. The movie itself may not be offered in the claimed resolution. Netflix’s 4K requirements—including 15 Mbps, HEVC on some Windows 11 devices, and HDCP 2.2 for compatible external displays—are provider-specific and should not be generalized to other apps.
A movie has disappeared
Streaming rights are temporary. Search another legal service, then check rental or purchase options. Verify availability on the provider’s own title page instead of relying on an old catalog list.
What “free” really means
There are three separate costs to check:
- App price: the Microsoft Store download may cost nothing.
- Service access: Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, and much of Prime Video or Apple TV require a subscription or account.
- Title access: a particular film may require a rental, purchase, bundle, or may be available with advertisements.
You do not need all seven subscriptions. Pick one paid service that matches what you actually watch, use Tubi or Pluto TV for no-monthly-bill viewing, and rotate subscriptions when a specific catalog is worth a month.
Quick Recap
What about VLC, Plex, Windows Media Player, and Movies & TV?
These products solve a different problem:
- VLC Media Player: best for legally obtained local video files; it does not provide licensed streaming catalogs.
- Plex: useful for personal media libraries and server-based playback.
- Windows Media Player: local playback, not a replacement for streaming subscriptions.
- Microsoft Movies & TV: keep it if you already purchased content through Microsoft’s former storefront. Microsoft says it no longer sells new movies and TV content through Microsoft.com, the Microsoft Store on Windows, or the Xbox Store, although existing purchases remain playable, including downloaded playback on Windows. See Microsoft’s support guidance.
