This evidence-backed selection focuses on songs written for games, not licensed tracks that already existed independently. It is a curated list, not a universal ranking; the available credits securely establish six selections, rather than ten.
What counts as an original game song?
For this list, an original song is one whose melody and lyrics were written specifically for and used in a game. That definition follows the Recording Academy’s songwriting-award criteria for visual media, which include video games. It excludes licensed songs created independently, and it distinguishes lyrical songs from instrumental score cues.
“Best” is a matter of judgment, not a measurable consensus. The selections below are considered for how clearly they were made for a game, what they do in its story or play, and whether their musical character holds up outside that context.
Six standout songs written for games
1. “Song of the Ancients” — NieR / NieR Replicant
Singer and lyricist Emi Evans created an invented language for the NieR music. She has described “Song of the Ancients” as the result of her first attempt at making that language, drawing on sounds and languages to form words that feel lyrical without reading as ordinary, immediately understood lyrics.

That choice suits a game song whose voice can carry emotion without pulling attention toward a literal message. Game director Yoko Taro explained that recognizable lyrics might distract from gameplay. The result is a vocal performance that feels human while keeping its language mysterious.
2. “Death Stranding” — DEATH STRANDING, performed by CHVRCHES
Kojima Productions identifies the track as written especially for the game. CHVRCHES said it watched Hideo Kojima play and aimed to capture the game’s emotional atmosphere while making a song that could stand on its own. The band described the lyrical relationship as impressionistic rather than a direct retelling of the plot.
That balance is the track’s appeal: it belongs to the game’s mood without functioning as a plot summary. CHVRCHES put the aim plainly: “We wanted it to feel part of the game but also a standalone song in its own right.”

3. “Build That Wall (Zia’s Theme)” — Bastion
Supergiant’s soundtrack credits Darren Korb with writing, producing and recording the music, and credits Korb with lyrics and vocals on “Build That Wall (Zia’s Theme).” Its character-specific subtitle gives the song a clear story role: it is tied to Zia rather than serving as a generic song laid over the action.

The song’s intimate, folk-inflected presentation contrasts with the scale of Bastion’s ruined world. That contrast helps make a personal voice feel present within a landscape shaped by catastrophe.
4. “Mother, I’m Here (Zulf’s Theme)” — Bastion
Also credited on Supergiant’s official soundtrack listing, “Mother, I’m Here (Zulf’s Theme)” is another character-linked song. Its pairing with “Build That Wall” shows how a game can use songs not just as atmosphere, but as distinct character statements.

The soundtrack credits lyrics and vocals to Korb, Ashley Barrett and Logan Cunningham as applicable across its songs. The official listing establishes the track and its character association; it does not, by itself, provide a detailed account of the scene in which it appears.
5. “Setting Sail, Coming Home (End Theme)” — Bastion
Supergiant’s listing names “Setting Sail, Coming Home” as the end theme and credits Korb, Barrett and Cunningham among the song’s lyric and vocal contributors. Its designated ending role places it in a different category from the character themes: it arrives as a closing song rather than an in-world character statement.

That distinction matters. Composer Austin Wintory has noted that an end-credits “summary” song is different from in-game source music. The former can gather a game’s themes into a final musical perspective; the latter belongs to the world or action as it unfolds.

6. “A Beautiful Song” — NieR:Automata
Square Enix’s official catalog for the NieR:Automata Original Soundtrack Vinyl LP includes “A Beautiful Song” among its tracks. That confirms the song’s place on the game’s soundtrack and its official physical-release listing.
The catalog entry alone does not establish the song’s scene-level function or the details of its creation, so this selection rests on a narrower claim than the game-specific accounts available for the other entries: it is an identified song on the official soundtrack, not a fully documented production story.

Game songs can be written to a brief, developed with lyricists, or built from lyrics supplied by a game’s writers. They may be composed at different stages of production, and their job changes with their placement. An end-credit song can provide a thematic summation; source music can sound as though it belongs inside the fictional world.

Some games integrate music even more tightly with play. The South of Midnight team has described building songs from creature stories and lyrics, then breaking music into sections that evolve in response to the player and level. In that kind of design, a song is not simply a fixed track attached to a scene: its parts can participate in the game’s changing experience.
Why this is a six-song selection, not a definitive top ten
A “best” list is editorial, but the factual foundation still matters. The available documentation securely supports the six songs above, while not establishing primary credits and detailed context for ten distinct candidates. Expanding the list with familiar game songs without comparable verification would make the ranking sound more certain than its evidence permits. The six selections show several distinct approaches—fictional-language vocals, atmospheric collaboration, character themes and an end-credit song—without presenting them as a consensus order.
