10 Best Pixar Protagonists, Ranked

From Carl Fredricksen to Ian Lightfoot, these 10 Pixar protagonists stand out for the choices they make, the people they affect and the ways they change.

Who is the best Pixar protagonist? This is a reasoned, subjective ranking—not an official Pixar list or a claim of critical or audience consensus. It considers protagonists from Pixar feature films released through October 7, 2026. A protagonist is the character, or set of co-leads, whose goals, choices and change principally drive the story; ensemble films can have more than one. The ranking weighs agency, character development, emotional impact, relationships, memorability and influence on the plot.

How this ranking works

Each entry is judged by the same character-focused criteria: what the protagonist wants, how much their decisions shape events, whether they change, how their relationships deepen the story, and how distinctly they remain in memory. This adapts the kinds of broad storytelling considerations TIME has used in a ranking of Pixar films; TIME’s June 26, 2025 list ranked 29 films, not protagonists. TIME’s Pixar film ranking is an example of explicit editorial criteria, not evidence for this order.

For ensemble stories, the ranking treats closely linked co-leads as a shared entry where separating them would misrepresent the film. Popularity, box-office results and merchandise do not establish who is the strongest protagonist.

10. Ian Lightfoot — Onward

Ian begins with a modest but emotionally urgent wish: to meet his father, who died before Ian could know him. The quest gives him a clear goal, but his deeper journey is learning to act despite insecurity and to recognize the care already present in his life. His choices repeatedly depend on working with his older brother Barley, whose confidence and impulsiveness contrast with Ian’s caution.

Pixar describes Ian as “sweet and determined with the best of intentions,” while noting that lack of confidence and nervous energy can trip him up. That tension makes his growth legible: he does not become a different person so much as someone more willing to trust his judgment and his bond with Barley. Ian ranks tenth because his arc is tender and effective, though the film’s emotional force is inseparable from the brothers’ shared story.

Pixar’s Onward page offers the studio’s character description and commentary from head of story Kelsey Mann.

9. Bob Parr / Mr. Incredible — The Incredibles

Bob’s conflict is not simply that he misses being a superhero. He wants the identity and purpose he associates with heroism, but his effort to reclaim them puts his family at risk. Pixar technical director Rick Sayre captures the contradiction: “Bob is a superhero stuck in his own suburban fortress of solitude.”

Bob’s meaningful change is learning that strength is not a solo performance. His family members are not obstacles to his old life; they are the people whose abilities and trust make the family’s survival possible. His arc is memorable because it connects a superhero fantasy to a recognizable struggle over pride, work and family responsibility. He lands below the top tier because the film’s protagonist role and resolution are shared across the Parr family.

Pixar’s The Incredibles page includes Sayre’s characterization and story supervisor Mark Andrews’s discussion of how character perspective shapes the island.

8. Miguel Rivera — Coco

Miguel’s ambition to become a musician conflicts with his family’s ban on music, so the story makes his goal both personal and relational. He has agency: he pursues music even when doing so strains the family ties that matter to him. Over the course of the film, he learns that honoring his passion does not require dismissing family history, and that memory and connection are part of what gives music meaning.

Music is more than a career wish in Miguel’s story; it is a way to express himself and to connect. Pixar screenwriter Matthew Aldrich describes Dante as “Miguel’s confidant, the only character he shares his music with,” underscoring how trust shapes Miguel’s relationships. Miguel ranks eighth because his emotional journey is exceptionally clear, though his story’s power also rests on a broad family ensemble.

Pixar’s Coco page discusses the film’s music and includes Aldrich’s comment about Dante and Miguel.

7. Mei Lee — Turning Red

Mei’s transformation into a giant red panda gives physical form to a coming-of-age conflict: how to make room for her own changing identity while navigating a close, demanding relationship with her mother. Her feelings and decisions drive the plot, and her friendships give her a space to explore who she is beyond the expectations she has learned to meet.

Mei’s growth is not a simple rejection of family or a return to obedience. The satisfying part is her attempt to choose what to keep and what to change for herself. She ranks seventh for the way the film turns an inward, often awkward process into a vivid source of action and comedy. This placement is an editorial assessment, not a claim of a measurable or official Pixar ranking.

Disney’s Pixar directory identifies characters across the studio’s films, but it does not provide a comparative ranking or a consistent analysis of their arcs.

6. Lightning McQueen — Cars

Lightning enters his story convinced that individual talent and winning are enough. His ambition sends him off course, where the people of Radiator Springs challenge his self-centered idea of success. The change that matters is not that he stops being competitive; it is that he learns to value relationships and to act with consideration for others.

His arc is easy to follow and tied directly to consequential choices, making him a strong lead for a broad audience. He ranks sixth because his transformation is compelling but follows a familiar path from arrogance to humility. His position reflects character analysis, not the popularity of the franchise or its merchandise.

5. Remy — Ratatouille

Remy has an unusual combination of ambition and constraint: he wants to cook, but the world around him sees a rat as fundamentally unsuited to a kitchen. His goal drives the film’s central complications, while his partnership with Linguini forces him to turn a private talent into a risky collaboration.

Remy’s story stands out because it makes creative ambition tangible without pretending that talent alone solves every problem. He has to navigate trust, concealment and the consequences of pursuing a dream in a world that will not readily accept him. His distinctive perspective and persistence earn him fifth place; the partnership at the center of the plot also means his success is not a solitary achievement.

4. Joy and Sadness — Inside Out

Inside Out is an ensemble by design, so ranking only one emotion would misstate who drives the central journey. Joy and Sadness are co-leads: their conflicting approaches send them away from headquarters and force both to reconsider what Riley needs. Joy’s drive to keep Riley happy initially looks protective, while Sadness’s role appears disruptive; the story gradually reveals the limits of that division.

Their relationship makes the film’s central change possible. Joy learns that sadness is not a failure to be corrected but a necessary way to seek comfort and connection. The pair ranks fourth for turning an abstract emotional insight into a character-driven adventure. The shared placement reflects the film’s structure, not a claim that their roles are identical.

3. Woody — Toy Story

Woody is a natural protagonist because his sense of place and purpose is put under pressure. As Andy’s favored toy, he is accustomed to being the leader; Buzz Lightyear’s arrival challenges both his status and his understanding of himself. Woody’s choices move the story, and his relationship with Buzz gives his change a clear shape: rivalry gives way to cooperation and friendship.

Mattel Disney and Pixar Toy Story 5 Jessie Action Figure
  • The magic of Disney and Pixar's Toy Story! Bring the friendship and adventure of the movies home with these action figures of favorite characters. Each sold separately, subject to availability.
  • Ready for fun! With true-to-film design and posable joints, these figures are ready to round up some fun.

  • 3 years and up! This Jessie figure is suitable for Toy Story fans ages 3 years and older and comes in different packaging styles.

His flaws matter. Jealousy and insecurity make him more than a straightforward hero, while his eventual willingness to work with Buzz makes the story’s resolution earned. Pixar’s official Toy Story page describes details of Woody’s cowboy design and pull-string voice box; those details support his distinctive toy identity, while the ranking here is based on his role and arc in the film.

2. Luca Paguro — Luca

Luca’s story turns curiosity into action. He wants to see the world beyond the limits imposed by fear, and his friendship with Alberto gives him the courage to try. But Luca’s growth is not just about leaving home: he has to decide how to handle the danger of being discovered and what loyalty, independence and belonging mean to him.

His relationships—especially with Alberto and Giulia—shape his choices rather than simply decorating the adventure. Luca ranks second because his self-discovery feels specific and emotionally grounded, and because the film lets his decisions carry real consequences for the people he cares about. He narrowly misses the top spot in this subjective ordering.

1. Carl Fredricksen — Up

Carl begins Up defined by grief and by a promise he believes he must keep alone. His journey is propelled by a concrete goal, but its deeper movement is toward renewed connection: Russell, Kevin and Dug disrupt the isolation Carl has built around himself. His choices determine not only where the adventure goes, but whether he will let new relationships matter.

Carl earns the top position because the film gives his change unusual emotional weight without making it abstract. His love for Ellie remains central, but he learns that honoring the past does not require refusing the present. The result is a protagonist whose loss, stubbornness, care and capacity to change all shape the story’s movement.

Why this order is subjective

Pixar’s official pages and Disney’s character directory are useful for character identity and creator commentary, but they do not establish a studio-wide ranking of protagonists. TIME’s cited list ranks films, not characters. No published statistic in the sources used here measures protagonist quality, so the order above is an editorial judgment based on character agency, change, relationships, emotional impact and memorability—not a definitive verdict.
