Its strongest promise is a fresh mystery built around the duo and a lively set of new characters. The available independent review evidence adds a note of restraint: Associated Press critic Jake Coyle described the sequel as “a more timid and tame movie that leans largely on the (still winning) duo of Hopps and Wilde.”
What is Zootopia 2 about?
Disney’s official synopsis sets Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde on a new case after Gary De’Snake arrives in the city. The returning detectives go undercover in unexpected parts of town, and the investigation tests their growing partnership. That premise gives the sequel a natural way to widen its setting: the city is not just a backdrop, but a place the leads must explore to solve the mystery.
Disney lists Jared Bush and Byron Howard as directors and Yvett Merino as producer. These film details and the official premise are on Disney’s Zootopia 2 film page.
Who are the new characters?
Gary De’Snake, voiced by Ke Huy Quan, is the newcomer whose arrival sets the mystery in motion. Disney’s official trailer description also introduces characters connected to the Partners in Crisis counseling program: Nibbles, voiced by Fortune Feimster, and quokka therapist Dr. Fuzzby, voiced by Quinta Brunson.

The cast and character details come from Disney’s film page and the official Walt Disney Animation Studios trailer description. They establish who is introduced, but do not by themselves show how much each character contributes to the finished story.
Is it as good as the first Zootopia?
The evidence supports a qualified yes for viewers who most want more of Judy and Nick together: the official premise keeps their partnership at the center, and Coyle’s AP characterization calls the duo “still winning.” The qualification matters, though. Coyle also calls the film “more timid and tame,” suggesting that the sequel may not feel as daring as the 2016 original. That is one critic’s judgment, not a measure of critical consensus.

A fair comparison turns on more than returning characters. Consider whether the new mystery feels as fresh as the original’s, whether Judy and Nick’s partnership changes in meaningful ways, whether the newcomers matter to the case, and whether the new locations make the city feel more expansive rather than simply busier. The available sources establish the sequel’s premise and one reviewer’s broad assessment; they do not support a scene-by-scene comparison or a wider consensus claim.
