Choose a managed cloud loop if you want a prerecorded YouTube stream to keep running without maintaining a server; choose OBS or FFmpeg on a VPS if you want control and can handle Linux setup, bandwidth, monitoring and recovery yourself. Neither route is universally cheaper. The VPS bill depends heavily on outbound transfer, and the available published prices do not establish an all-in cost for an India-hosted VPS with enough capacity.

A 24/7 prerecorded stream sends video continuously to YouTube Live. The key difference is who runs and maintains the encoder after you start:

What YouTube settings should a 24/7 stream use?
Use YouTube’s current live encoder guidance as the authority for ingest settings; recommendations vary with codec, resolution and frame rate. For H.264, YouTube currently lists these example bitrates:

YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and up to 60 fps. For a stable encoder setup, use constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says the interval should not exceed four seconds. It recommends RTMPS. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings page for its full, current table and any changes before configuring a stream.
How do you set up OBS or FFmpeg on a VPS?
This route gives you control but makes the server your responsibility. The steps below describe the work involved; exact VPS operating-system commands vary by provider and Linux distribution, so use that provider’s current installation instructions rather than copying a command intended for another image.

- Confirm YouTube Live is enabled. First-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to become available. Set up the event in YouTube Studio and note the server URL and stream key.
- Choose a VPS plan by transfer allowance, not sticker price alone. Estimate egress from your intended bitrate and continuous runtime, then compare it with the plan’s included transfer and overage policy. Confirm location, tax, IP, storage and any bandwidth-counting rules.
- Install your encoder and upload the media. Use OBS if you need its interface and controls, or FFmpeg for a command-driven pipeline. Verify the source file plays correctly, and ensure the server can read it continuously.
- Configure the stream output. Match the output codec, resolution and frame rate to the source and YouTube’s supported settings. For H.264, set CBR, select the bitrate for the chosen format from YouTube’s current guidance, and use a two-second keyframe interval.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: do not put it in public scripts, screenshots or repositories. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio before restarting the encoder.
- Test before going live and monitor stream health. YouTube explicitly advises, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Check the incoming stream and audio/video in Studio, then watch the server and encoder logs for disconnects, resource problems and repeated failures.
- Plan restart and recovery. Configure your process manager or service to restart the encoder after an application or server restart, and arrange monitoring that can alert you when it stops. Restart automation does not itself prove that the stream is healthy or guarantee recovery from every failure.
How much data does a 24/7 stream use?
At a constant bitrate, a stream sends data every hour whether or not viewers are watching. Approximate monthly figures below are arithmetic from bitrate multiplied by time, expressed in decimal units, before protocol overhead, reconnects or retries:

These examples illustrate the transfer calculation; 4.5 Mbps is not YouTube’s current H.264 recommendation for 1080p30. YouTube currently recommends 10 Mbps for that format. Ask a VPS provider how it counts outbound transfer and whether audio, protocol overhead, reconnects and retries are included.

What might it cost in India?
VPS pricing depends on the transfer allowance
DigitalOcean’s official pricing page currently lists Basic tiers at US$4/month with 500 GiB transfer, US$6/month with 1,000 GiB, and US$12/month with 2,000 GiB. These are displayed provider prices and allowances, not an all-in quotation for a VPS physically hosted in India; location, taxes, IP costs and overage terms can change the bill.
As a comparison, the modeled 4.5 Mbps stream uses about 1.46 decimal TB in 30 days: that is above the listed 500 GiB and 1,000 GiB examples and below 2,000 GiB before overhead. A 10 Mbps stream uses about 3.24 decimal TB in the same period, exceeding the cited 2,000 GiB allowance. Confirm units and provider billing rules before treating those comparisons as a final bill estimate.

No verified price here establishes the current all-in cost of an India-hosted VPS with sufficient outbound transfer. Do not conclude that self-hosting is cheaper based only on a server’s lowest advertised monthly price.
Home PC electricity is a measured, local cost

Compare the same 30-day workload
For a fair comparison, use the same resolution, frame rate and intended bitrate, then include transfer, tax, IPv4, storage, recovery work and the value of your time. For a home PC, include measured incremental electricity and any relevant broadband limits. A plug-in electricity meter can help measure actual wall draw; check socket and load compatibility before using one.

Choose managed cloud streaming when
- You want a prerecorded loop without keeping a home computer or home upload connection running continuously.
- You prefer a vendor dashboard and want the provider to operate the encoder.
