Legal anime streaming is less about finding one perfect website than matching a service to the shows, release schedule, and viewing method you actually want. Crunchyroll is the strongest specialist option, Netflix and Hulu carry substantial mainstream libraries, while free services such as Tubi, Pluto TV, and official YouTube channels trade breadth or convenience for advertising, regional limits, or a live-channel format.

The list below separates on-demand libraries from free streaming channels and library-based services. Catalogs change by country, so a title appearing on a service’s anime page is not a guarantee that it will be available in your location.

At a glance

Website Best for Cost model Important limitation
Crunchyroll Seasonal anime and the deepest dedicated catalog Free curated channel; paid Premium library The free channel is not the full on-demand catalog
Netflix Originals, exclusives, and mainstream anime Paid subscription Catalog and price vary by country
Hulu U.S. viewers wanting anime alongside television Paid subscription and bundles Availability is market-specific; ads depend on the plan
HIDIVE Fans looking for an anime-focused alternative Paid subscription Confirm current price, catalog, and availability before subscribing
Tubi Free, ad-supported viewing Free with ads Regional availability is limited
Pluto TV Live, lean-back anime viewing Free with ads Do not assume the offering is entirely on-demand
RetroCrush Older and classic anime Free and/or paid options may vary Check current plans and supported countries directly
Hoopla Borrowing anime through a participating library Included with eligible library access Your library controls availability and borrowing rules
Prime Video Anime mixed into a broader video marketplace Prime titles, rentals, purchases, and add-ons Not every anime title is included with Prime
Official YouTube channels Free episodes, clips, and licensed uploads Usually free with ads Videos can be region-blocked or removed

1. Crunchyroll

Crunchyroll is the clearest first stop for viewers who want an anime-first service rather than a general streaming platform. Its paid app provides the full on-demand library, ad-free playback, and simulcasts. The site’s current browsing labels include New, Popular, Simulcast, Browse All (A-Z), Simulcast Season, and Release Calendar.

There is also a genuinely free option, but it is easy to misunderstand. Crunchyroll Channel is a curated, 24/7 channel that requires no signup on supported platforms including LG Smart TVs, Vizio Smart TVs, Amazon Freevee, and Roku. It is not the same thing as getting the entire Crunchyroll library free on demand.

The standard free trial is seven consecutive days and requires a valid payment method. Cancelling during the trial ends Premium access immediately. A temporary authorization, sometimes $1 or the plan amount, may appear and later disappear. Crunchyroll announced U.S. membership-price changes in February 2026; the announcement listed a limited-time Fan Annual Plan at $66.99 per year, so check the checkout page for the current offer.

2. Netflix

Netflix’s Anime category is available at the direct path /browse/genre/7424. It is a good choice if you already pay for Netflix and want anime alongside films, dramas, and documentaries. The current category has included Jujutsu Kaisen, One Piece, Blue Lock, Naruto, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, The Apothecary Diaries, SAKAMOTO DAYS, DAN DA DAN, PLUTO, and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.

Netflix is particularly valuable for platform-associated productions such as Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, BEASTARS, and Castlevania. The trade-off is that Netflix’s selection is not universal. Both the catalog and price depend on the billing country, and the anime URL can redirect to a regional version. Do not compare a price seen in one country with a friend’s price elsewhere.

To start, visit Netflix, select Join Now, enter an email address, choose a plan, and continue with Next. Netflix currently describes its signup as “No commitments, cancel anytime,” but review the plan’s ad and download conditions before confirming.

3. Hulu

Hulu’s Anime hub is a strong U.S.-focused option for viewers who want anime mixed with a larger television library. Its current anime page lists series including BLEACH: Thousand-Year Blood War, Naruto Shippuden, Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation, Attack on Titan, Dragon Ball Z Kai, One-Punch Man, Hunter x Hunter, One Piece, My Hero Academia, Jujutsu Kaisen, and SPY x FAMILY.

Hulu’s pricing is complicated because the service is sold alone and in bundles. The checked U.S. page showed a Disney+, Hulu Basic bundle at $12.99 per month and a Premium bundle at $19.99 per month. It also showed Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ combinations at $19.99 per month with Hulu ads and $29.99 per month without Hulu ads. Prices and bundle contents can change.

“No ads” does not mean every second is uninterrupted: Hulu says some titles can retain a short ad break before and after an episode because of streaming rights. Live TV and its video-on-demand content continue to include ads. Also, do not assume every Hulu product has the same trial; the checked page advertised a three-day trial for Hulu with Ads plus Live TV while separately explaining that the Hulu + Live TV plan in a bundle has no free trial.

4. HIDIVE

HIDIVE is an anime-focused paid service and a useful alternative when a particular series is not on Crunchyroll, Netflix, or Hulu. It belongs on a comparison list because specialist services often divide the market between them, especially for seasonal shows and less mainstream catalog titles.

However, current HIDIVE plan labels, pricing, trial length, and exact catalog were not reliably exposed in the available official page capture. That makes precise price claims risky. Check the live subscription page from your country before paying, and search for the specific show rather than subscribing based on a general catalog claim.

5. Tubi

Tubi’s Anime category is the free, ad-supported choice in this group. It is useful when avoiding a monthly subscription matters more than getting every new simulcast. As with other free platforms, expect a changing selection and advertising rather than a permanent, comprehensive anime library.

Availability is a major qualification. Tubi’s own anime page states that Tubi is unavailable in Europe because of changes in European Union laws. The service should therefore be treated as region-dependent, not as a worldwide free anime website. Use the category page from your location to see whether playback is supported before planning a watchlist.

6. Pluto TV

Pluto TV is best understood as a free, ad-supported FAST service—free ad-supported streaming television—rather than a conventional anime library. Its appeal is simple: select a channel, see what is playing, and watch without building a subscription.

That format also defines the limitation. Pluto TV’s anime availability, channel names, and schedule can change by region and time. Do not describe its anime offering as entirely on demand, and do not promise a particular channel without checking the current regional Pluto TV page. It is a good pick for casual viewing, but less suitable if you need a precise episode in a precise order.

7. RetroCrush

RetroCrush is aimed at viewers interested in older and classic anime rather than only the newest seasonal releases. That focus makes it a useful complement to larger services: if your watchlist leans toward earlier television series, films, and cult favorites, a specialist archive can be more relevant than a platform dominated by current hits.

Also popular on Amazon

RetroCrush’s current homepage and FAQ did not provide reliably readable plan, catalog, supported-country, or navigation information in the checked material. Confirm the live offer from your country before relying on a free tier, exact monthly cost, offline viewing, or a particular title. Those details should not be generalized internationally.

8. Hoopla

Hoopla is a library service, not an anime-only streamer. If your public library participates, you may be able to borrow television and other video content through a library account. Its navigation includes Home, Audiobooks, Ebooks, Movies, Television, Comics, BingePasses, and Music; the homepage has also displayed a Pokémon BingePass.

The key advantage is that access may be included with library membership rather than another streaming bill. The key limitation is that the library—not Hoopla alone—determines whether you can use the service, which titles appear, and how many borrows are allowed. Search after signing in; a title visible on a general Hoopla page is not a guarantee that it is available through your library.

9. Amazon Prime Video

Prime Video puts anime inside a larger marketplace. It can be convenient if you already use Amazon and want to check one account before joining another service. Depending on the title, however, access may come through Prime inclusion, a rental, a purchase, or an add-on channel subscription.

That distinction matters at checkout. A show appearing in Prime Video search does not mean it is included with a Prime membership. Open the individual title page and check the entitlement label and price before pressing play or renting an episode. Current anime storefront channel names, prices, and trial terms should also be verified in the live account for your country.

10. Official YouTube anime channels

YouTube can be a legal source when episodes or films are uploaded by the rights holder or an officially identified distributor. Toei Animation’s official channel is one example of the kind of source to look for. This route is especially useful for free clips, promotional material, selected episodes, and occasional licensed releases.

Use the channel’s identity—not merely the video title—as the legitimacy test. A fan upload, mirrored episode, or channel using studio artwork is not automatically authorized. Availability can also change: a video may appear in search but fail at playback because of region restrictions, or disappear after licensing changes. Check the specific video page and its current playback status rather than assuming the whole channel is globally licensed.

How to choose the right legal anime site

  1. Search for the exact series first. A service’s anime landing page shows its general position, not necessarily the title you want. Search the title on two or three candidates.
  2. Check your country. Netflix, Tubi, Pluto TV, Hulu, Crunchyroll, and YouTube can all present different content or access rules by region.
  3. Decide between on-demand and live viewing. Crunchyroll Premium, Netflix, and Hulu are primarily on-demand. Pluto TV and Crunchyroll Channel are better suited to scheduled, channel-style viewing.
  4. Read the billing label. On Prime Video, distinguish Prime-included titles from rentals, purchases, and add-on subscriptions. On Hulu, compare the exact bundle and ad tier.
  5. Use trials carefully. Record the renewal date, understand whether cancelling ends access immediately, and look for a pending authorization on your payment account.
  6. Try library access before paying. If your library supports Hoopla, it may provide legitimate video access at no additional streaming-service cost.

What to avoid

Be wary of sites promising every anime in one place, especially when they offer newly released episodes without identifying a rights holder. A legal service may have only part of a franchise, may show ads, or may be unavailable in your country. Those limitations are normal licensing behavior—not evidence that an unofficial mirror is a better option.

FAQ

What is the best legal website for watching anime?

Crunchyroll is the strongest general choice for dedicated anime fans because its paid library, simulcasts, and anime-specific browsing tools are central to the service. Netflix, Hulu, and HIDIVE can be better for particular titles or bundles.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where can I watch anime legally for free?

Options include Crunchyroll Channel on supported devices, Tubi where it operates, Pluto TV’s free live-TV service, selected official YouTube uploads, and Hoopla if your library participates. Free access is usually ad-supported, curated, regional, or dependent on a library account.

Is all anime on Crunchyroll free?

No. Crunchyroll Channel is a free, curated 24/7 channel on select platforms. The full Crunchyroll app library, ad-free on-demand viewing, and simulcasts are associated with Premium access.

Are anime catalogs the same in every country?

No. Licensing changes by territory. Netflix can redirect to a local catalog and price, Tubi is unavailable in Europe according to its own page, and YouTube videos can be region-blocked or removed. Check the service from your location and verify the specific title.

The Bottom Line

For one dedicated anime subscription, start with Crunchyroll. Choose Netflix or Hulu when their broader entertainment libraries or exclusive titles matter, and consider HIDIVE for a specific gap in the catalog. For free viewing, check Crunchyroll Channel, Tubi, Pluto TV, official YouTube uploads, and your local library’s Hoopla access—but confirm regional availability and whether the content is live, ad-supported, borrowed, or truly on demand.
