Janelle later clarified that she did not consider herself to be in a plural marriage. That distinction matters: a relationship’s public status and each person’s understanding of the relationship were not necessarily the same.
What happened between Meri and Kody?
Meri and Kody’s relationship had reportedly been distant for years before its end became public in December 2022. Their accounts differed: coverage relayed Meri’s view that Kody made the decision and Kody’s account that he no longer considered the relationship a marriage. The legal divorce was a separate event
Kody and Meri legally divorced in 2014 so Kody could legally marry Robyn and adopt Robyn’s children from a prior marriage, according to the Los Angeles Times. That legal change did not itself end Meri and Kody’s spiritual relationship. The later public split concerned that relationship, so the two events should not be treated as the same breakup.

What explains the marriages’ different endings?
The reporting describes different patterns rather than one cause shared by all three relationships.
