Sunny Queensland footage was appearing while Britain was in winter, and some UK viewers responded with jokes about their cold weather and envy of an apparently summery life.
What the dance actually is
The couple’s videos are not a choreographed routine that needs practice or a particular skill. As PerthNow described them in a report published on 9 January 2024, the pair dance in an easygoing way and lip-sync to “Wake Up,” the 2014 single by The Vamps. The format is a short, unfussy clip, which is part of why it was easy to copy.
The song’s only lyric quoted in that coverage is the line “Wake up in the morning with the sunlight in my eyes.” It belongs to the song, not to either creator, and it is the lyric that gives the clips their sunny mood.
Why the seasonal contrast became the story
The reaction depends on the calendar. In January, when the report was published, it was summer in Queensland and winter in Britain. A bright, warm clip landing in a British feed during the coldest weeks of the year invited a predictable response: viewers joked about their weather and said they wished they were somewhere warmer.

That is the core of the “making Brits miserable” framing. It describes a playful, self-aware reaction that PerthNow reported. It does not measure how British people feel in general, and the coverage does not show that the couple intended to provoke anything.
The pushback
The same report includes viewers who disputed the premise that Australia’s weather is uniformly better. One commenter said storms had kept people indoors for weeks, which undercuts the simple idea that sunshine is guaranteed on the other side of the world. The exchange is useful because it shows the joke was never a single verdict: some replies were envious, others were teasing back, and some were simply correcting the picture.

In practice, the reaction split into two broad types:
- Winter-weather envy and imitation: viewers joking about cold conditions, or posting their own versions of the dance.
- Weather pushback: viewers who argued that Australian weather is not reliably better, citing storms and rain.
The reporting supports both types as real responses, but it does not say how common either one was.

How other creators joined in
PerthNow reported that the trend spread beyond the original couple. Other couples, including Zac and Lucinda from Love Island, posted their own versions. The report also says Petzl-Duncan introduced the trend on Instagram as well as TikTok. Those are the claims the coverage makes, and they describe the spread as it stood in January 2024.
What the 2.7 million figure does and does not show
The article reported that the original video had 2.7 million views as of its publication date, 9 January 2024. That is a dated figure from a single news report. It is not a current count, and it was not verified against platform data. Views on a TikTok can keep growing or stop, and the figure cannot tell you how many people actually felt miserable or envious.

What is not established
The coverage does not include an interview with Petzl-Duncan or O’Leary, so there is no on-record explanation of why they made the videos. It also does not include a statement from an expert or official about the trend, and no independent audience survey measured the reaction. Anything beyond the clips and the comments PerthNow reported would be speculation.
The current state of the account, including whether the original clips are still posted and what they now show, is outside what this article can confirm.
