The main reservations: the retro animation may take getting used to, Peter sometimes shares the spotlight heavily with his friends, and the story struck some critics as less ambitious in its subtext than X-Men ’97. This is a summary of reviews published around the series’ January 29, 2025 premiere—not a new review or a verdict on every viewer’s experience.
What did the first reviews say?
Rotten Tomatoes’ first-reviews roundup described the initial reviews as unanimously positive. That broad consensus came with different emphases and qualifications, rather than a single shared explanation for the show’s appeal.
IGN’s Joshua Yehl called it “a truly fresh take on Spider-Man filled with many delightful surprises.” Jarrod Jones of The A.V. Club described it as “A vibrant, funny, dramatic, and endearing return to animation.” Daniel Fienberg of The Hollywood Reporter offered a more measured assessment: “It’s slight, but pleasantly so.” These are selected quotations reproduced in the Rotten Tomatoes roundup, not a complete survey of every review.
The praise focused on a familiar origin being rearranged in clever ways, the balance of new and recognizable elements, and energetic comedy. Critics also responded to the show’s visual identity: one likened the experience to watching a comic book move, while another saw nostalgia where the Spider-Verse films pursue more formal experimentation.

What makes this Spider-Man story different?
The animated series follows Peter Parker as he becomes a hero in a continuity outside the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It draws on Spider-Man’s comic-book roots while redirecting familiar expectations. Most notably, Norman Osborn is Peter’s mentor in this version—not simply a figure from the familiar live-action story.
Showrunner and head writer Jeff Trammell said the series aimed to use audience expectations as a springboard: “We build on things we’ve seen before but present them in new ways. We use those expectations to our advantage and turn things away from where you might expect.” That approach helps explain why reviewers could recognize the origin-story building blocks while still calling the result fresh.
The story also gives Peter’s neighborhood and relationships substantial space. Disney identifies Nico Minoru, Lonnie Lincoln, Pearl Pangan and Harry Osborn among the ensemble, alongside Peter. Familiar Marvel figures including Daredevil, Doctor Strange, Otto Octavius and Chameleon also appear in the series’ world.
Trammell framed the emphasis on Peter’s life beyond the mask as deliberate: “We spend a lot more time with Peter in our series. A lot of the previous Spider-Man shows have been very Spider-Man focused, but for this, I felt like it was important to see who’s behind the mask and how that influences who Spidey is as a hero.” He added, “The people around him color Peter’s viewpoint.” Marvel Television and Marvel Animation head Brad Winderbaum likewise called it an ensemble show, saying, “It’s about the neighborhood.”

Why did some reviewers have reservations?
The retro animation can take adjustment
The series’ comic-influenced, retro-inspired style is part of its identity, but Rotten Tomatoes’ roundup notes that it may feel jarring at first. That is a matter of taste and acclimation, not a claim that the animation is technically deficient. Its nostalgic visual language also differs from the more formally adventurous approach associated with the Spider-Verse movies.

The ensemble can compete with Peter for attention
The neighborhood focus gives Peter’s relationships room to shape the story, as Trammell intended. Some critics, however, wanted more time centered on Peter himself rather than on the supporting cast. The same creative choice can therefore read as a strength—seeing who is behind the mask—or as a trade-off for viewers seeking a more Peter-dominant story.
Some wanted more thematic ambition
The roundup also records the view that the series has less ambitious subtext or scope than X-Men ’97. That comparison is about perceived thematic reach, not a finding that the shows have the same premise or aim. Fienberg’s description of the series as “slight, but pleasantly so” captures a related point: a lighter, more contained story can be enjoyable without feeling especially expansive.
