There is no publicly verified figure for Mariah Carey’s personal earnings from “All I Want for Christmas Is You” in a typical year. Published estimates put the song’s annual revenue in the millions, but they count different income streams and beneficiaries. One 2024 estimate puts song-generated earnings at about $3.4 million a year; a separate calculation for 2021 estimated $6.16 million in combined global master and publishing revenue—not $6.16 million paid to Carey.

What the published estimates say

Estimate What it measures What it does not establish
About $3.4 million per year, attributed to entertainment attorney Peter Bromley in a 2024 Manatt item An estimate of annual earnings generated by the song. The item also attributes to Bromley estimates of $103 million over 30 years and $9.8 million in royalties from 2 billion global Spotify streams. Manatt’s account It is not an audited account of Carey’s personal annual receipts, and the item does not provide a detailed year-by-year calculation.
$6.16 million in total for 2021 A historical estimate, attributed to Billboard and reproduced in a 2023 amended complaint: $4.5 million in global master-recording revenue plus $1.66 million in publishing royalties. The same passage estimates Carey’s share of master royalties at $1.55 million. The amended complaint The combined $6.16 million is not Carey’s personal income. The calculation is for 2021 and does not provide a full accounting of her receipts across all royalty streams.
$100 million in accumulated royalties as of 2023 An Associated Press estimate cited in a Library of Congress-hosted essay. Library of Congress essay This is an estimate of royalties accumulated over time, not an annual figure or a verified amount paid personally to Carey.

The figures are not interchangeable: they refer to different periods, revenue streams and recipients. Sporting News also summarizes the Billboard figures and notes that the recording-contract split and co-writers’ publishing split are not fully public in its account. Sporting News’ explanation

Why song revenue is not the same as Carey’s earnings

The song can generate money through at least two distinct rights: the sound recording, commonly called the master, and the underlying musical composition, which generates publishing royalties. A public performance can also produce performance royalties. The amounts paid to an artist, record label, writers and publishers depend on the rights involved and their agreements.

Carey and Walter Afanasieff are identified as co-writers in reporting and case materials. But the public estimates cited above do not disclose all relevant recording-contract terms or the complete writer and publisher allocation, so they cannot be used to calculate Carey’s precise personal take. In Manatt’s account, Bromley explains why the distinction matters: “If you’re a songwriter with no record revenue, it’s hard to make a living even if you’re making hits.”

Why the song keeps returning to earnings headlines

Seasonal listening gives the song recurring visibility, but chart performance alone cannot tell you how much anyone receives. The Associated Press reported in March 2025 that the song had reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for six consecutive years. That is evidence of its repeated chart success, not a royalty statement for any particular year. Associated Press, March 20, 2025

What the copyright lawsuit did—and did not—decide

Songwriters Andy Stone, who performs as Vince Vance, and Troy Powers alleged that Carey’s 1994 song infringed their earlier song of the same title. In March 2025, the Associated Press reported that Judge Mónica Ramírez Almadani granted summary judgment for Carey and Afanasieff, finding the plaintiffs had not met their burden of showing the songs were substantially similar. The case concerned the infringement claim; it was not a royalty accounting and did not establish Carey’s annual earnings.

Where the recording first appeared

Carey’s recording was released in 1994 on her first Christmas album, Merry Christmas. Its original release helps explain the song’s long history, but it does not change the central limitation: public estimates of song revenue do not reveal Carey’s exact personal income in a given year.
