Yes. Marvel announced Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom in July 2024, casting him in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Disney’s current Avengers: Doomsday page lists a theatrical release date of December 18, 2026. The announcement confirms Downey’s new role, but it does not establish that Doctor Doom is Tony Stark.
Which Avengers movies will Robert Downey Jr. appear in?
Marvel announced Downey as Doctor Doom for two films: Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. The announcement came at Marvel Studios’ San Diego Comic-Con presentation on July 27, 2024. Disney also named Anthony and Joe Russo as directors of both films and said Stephen McFeely would write the script. Disney’s announcement describes the Russos’ AGBO producing the films alongside Marvel Studios.
At the presentation, Downey joked, “New mask, same task.” Joe Russo introduced him as “the one person who could play Victor Von Doom.” The reveal marked a new MCU role for Downey, whose previous MCU character was Tony Stark/Iron Man.
When does Avengers: Doomsday come out?
Disney’s current Avengers: Doomsday film page lists December 18, 2026, for its theatrical release. That is different from the schedule reported when the films were first announced: Disney gave a May 2026 window for Doomsday in July 2024, and D23’s March 26, 2025 cast announcement also reported May 2026. Those dates are earlier plans, not the current date on Disney’s film page.

What is confirmed about Doctor Doom’s role?
Disney’s current film page identifies Downey as Victor von Doom/Doctor Doom and describes heroes from three distinct universes being set on a collision course against an existential threat. It does not provide a detailed plot. The 2024 casting announcement calls Doom a new role for Downey, but neither it nor the other official information cited here says that Victor von Doom is Tony Stark, or explains a connection between the two characters. Downey’s past role as Iron Man is not confirmation of a story identity or relationship.

Who else was announced for Avengers: Doomsday?
D23’s March 26, 2025 cast announcement named a large ensemble, including Chris Hemsworth, Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, Paul Rudd, Florence Pugh, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, and Pedro Pascal, alongside Downey. It is a cast announcement published on that date, not a guarantee that the list is final.

Not by itself. Marvel’s Secret Wars (1984–1985) comics page describes a story featuring the Avengers, X-Men, and Fantastic Four battling Doctor Doom and other villains. That provides useful background for the title, but a shared name does not confirm that the film will adapt that particular series or its plot.
