Sauron looks different in the Season 2 premiere because its opening is a flashback to an earlier form, played by Jack Lowden—not a recasting of the Sauron played by Charlie Vickers. After that form is killed, the story shows Sauron returning in the form viewers know as Halbrand. Annatar, the fair guise Vickers later adopts to deceive the Elves, is a separate transformation.
Who is the Sauron in the opening flashback?
The premiere reaches back to a time before Sauron appeared as Halbrand. In this earlier form, he is played by Jack Lowden. TIME’s August 29, 2024 explainer describes the scene: Adar and the orcs kill this version of Sauron, whose body becomes black goo, before he eventually reforms and takes the Halbrand identity played by Charlie Vickers. This is the series’ depiction of Sauron’s return, not a scene directly shown in Tolkien’s writing. (TIME)
How is the flashback different from Annatar?
Annatar is not the form in the opening flashback. He is Sauron’s later guise, adopted after his Halbrand identity is exposed to Galadriel. Amazon describes Annatar as the emissary known as the “Lord of Gifts,” who offers the Elves knowledge while manipulating them into making more Rings. (Amazon’s Season 2 overview)
| Appearance | Actor and story moment | Purpose in the story |
|---|---|---|
| Earlier form in the premiere’s flashback | Jack Lowden; before the Halbrand identity | The show depicts Sauron’s death and eventual return in another form. |
| Halbrand | Charlie Vickers; the identity Sauron takes after the flashback events | A form associated with the story before Sauron’s deception of the Elves as Annatar. |
| Annatar | Charlie Vickers; a later guise | To win the Elves’ trust and influence their creation of Rings. |
Why does Annatar look and act different?
Charlie Vickers says he drew on the idea of a “fair form” and imagined Annatar as “quite an angelic being.” The show gives the guise a different visual design: Vickers describes changed hair, ears and clothing, alongside a longer makeup process. The makeup team used contouring and shadowing to create angular lines. (Nerdist interview with Vickers)

The change is also in the performance. Vickers says Annatar’s movement and speech are meant to make Celebrimbor listen to someone who is, at first, a stranger. He describes the approach as “an assuredness and a calmness,” with a stillness that feels centered and controlled. The polished appearance and composed manner support Annatar’s role as a persuasive emissary, not a different character replacing Sauron.

Vickers says he took inspiration from the book’s idea of a fair form, but his comments describe the production’s interpretation rather than a definitive Tolkien-designed costume. The series also changes the chronology and circumstances of Sauron’s dealings with Celebrimbor: TIME notes that Sauron meets him as Halbrand before later approaching him as Annatar. So the premiere’s flashback and the later Annatar design belong to the show’s storytelling and screen design; they should not be mistaken for a precise visual account supplied by Tolkien. (TIME)
Amazon’s announcement characterizes Sauron’s new form as a means of deceiving Middle-earth’s inhabitants, while its Season 2 overview specifies how Annatar serves his plan with the Elves. The two changes answer different story needs: the flashback establishes an earlier stage of Sauron’s story, and Annatar is a later disguise crafted to gain influence. (Amazon’s Season 2 announcement)
