How to read these Pips clues
Pips is a domino-style logic game: place two-cell dominoes on a colored grid so the pips in each region meet that region’s condition. A domino can cross a color boundary, and each half counts toward the condition of the region it occupies. Conditions may require an exact total, equal or unequal values, a less-than or greater-than limit, or no restriction.
For a useful general approach, start with the most restrictive regions and follow the implications across their boundaries. The difficulty levels here are separate boards, not different answers to one shared grid; the reported placement lists below identify regions, tile pairs, and orientations.
Hints by difficulty
Easy
Start with the regions that have a strict upper or lower limit, then check any domino half that lands across a boundary. The reported solution uses four horizontal dominoes.

Medium
Keep the two exact-total-7 regions distinct while tracking placements. The less-than-2 region and the equal-1 region offer additional constraints; check each half of any boundary-crossing domino against the region it occupies.
Hard
Try the small green region labeled 2 on the right as an anchor. Erik Kain’s Forbes walkthrough notes, “The key to solving today’s puzzle — one I missed at first — is the Green 2 group on the right.” The linked exact-total-11 region is another useful deduction point: the walkthrough places a 5-6 domino from Orange 10 into Pink 11.

What the placement key does—and does not—show
The dated guide identifies the puzzle as #174 and supplies the regional pairs and orientations above, but its text does not provide row-and-column coordinates. Use the February 7 board image to map the placements to cells, and verify boundary-crossing halves against their own region conditions. The exact answer details come from dated secondary walkthroughs; the official NYT Pips destination was identified but was not accessible as an archival answer key.
