Her early story turns on Kingpin’s deception about her father’s death, while later comics take her into a separate story involving the Phoenix Force. The Marvel Studios version, played by Alaqua Cox, has its own emphasis on family, community and legacy.
What are Echo’s powers?
In Marvel Comics, Maya’s defining ability is photographic reflexes. Marvel describes her as able to assimilate other people’s skills by sight. In practical terms, she can observe a movement or technique and reproduce it, most notably in combat. That is imitation of observed actions—not a guarantee that she can copy every ability or automatically win against anyone she watches. Marvel’s character guide and the official collection description outline the ability.

Marvel’s Multiverse RPG profile lists “Combat Reflexes” and “Martial Arts” for Echo, which is a useful concise description of her combat-oriented skill set. RPG labels are game material, however, and should not be treated as a definitive list of fixed comic-continuity powers. Marvel Multiverse RPG character profile
Who is Maya Lopez in the comics?
Maya is a Deaf hero whose early comic identity is bound up with grief, revenge and a lie. Marvel’s character guide describes her as Cheyenne-Latin American. That description belongs to the comics reference; it should not be conflated with the distinct ancestry and community framing used for the screen series.

How does Echo’s comic origin connect her to Kingpin and Daredevil?
In the origin collected in Echo: The Saga of Maya Lopez, Wilson Fisk—Kingpin—manipulates Maya into believing Daredevil killed her father. Maya acts on that belief and is set against Daredevil. When she learns Fisk deceived her, the truth forces her to reconsider her relationship with both men. The collection is a focused place to begin with this origin; it is not a complete guide to every later Echo storyline. Marvel’s collection page
What is Echo’s Phoenix Force storyline?
The Phoenix Force is a later development in Maya’s comic history, not the source of her baseline photographic reflexes. Marvel’s Phoenix Song: Echo follows the Phoenix Force choosing Maya as its avatar and explores the consequences of that choice. Readers looking beyond her origin can use the Marvel series page to identify the series.

How is the MCU’s Echo different from the comics character?
In the Marvel Studios series, Alaqua Cox plays Maya, whose story centers on returning home, confronting Wilson Fisk and reckoning with family and legacy. Disney’s announcement described the project as an origin story about Maya reconnecting with Native American roots and considering family and community; the later Disney+ media kit frames the series around Fisk’s criminal empire and Maya’s return home.
The screen version’s cultural framing is specific to that adaptation: D23’s feature discusses Maya’s Choctaw community and ancestry. That is not interchangeable with Marvel’s comics guide description of Maya as Cheyenne-Latin American. D23’s January 5, 2024 character feature

The series also makes communication central to its visual language. D23 describes production choices supporting a Deaf lead, including sign-language learning for crew and scenes without spoken dialogue. Director Sydney Freeland explained: “The hands are the text, and the face is the subtext, and you need those two things together to get an idea of what a person’s feeling.” D23 feature, January 5, 2024

For Maya’s early comic history and the Fisk-Daredevil deception, start with the trade paperback Echo: The Saga of Maya Lopez, which Marvel lists as a collection. It is a practical origin-focused starting point, rather than a collection of all her subsequent stories. The separate Phoenix Song: Echo series is the next destination if you want to follow the later Phoenix Force arc.
