To find free live TV on a Roku device, open Live TV from the Home screen or open The Roku Channel and select its Live TV row. Search in the Live TV Zone or What to Watch when that option appears; use the Live TV Channel Guide to browse what is airing, and its Favorites filter to narrow the lineup. These are generally ad-supported internet streams, not a guarantee that every network’s live feed is free.
Find a free live channel quickly
- Press Home on the Roku remote.
- Choose Live TV from the Home screen or left-side menu. If you do not see it, open The Roku Channel and select its Live TV row.
- Browse the available channels, or use the Live TV search control if your device exposes it.
- Select a channel or program to start watching. If Roku directs you to an app or subscription offer instead, the result is not necessarily a free live stream.
Roku advertises more than 500 free live channels on The Roku Channel, including programming in categories such as news, weather, sports, food, home, reality, and kids’ entertainment. The lineup changes, so treat that as Roku’s current positioning rather than a fixed count or a promise that every channel is available on every device. Roku’s Live TV overview
Menu names and placement can differ by device, Roku OS version, and Home screen layout. Roku says its redesigned Home screen began rolling out in the U.S. on May 27, 2026; if a label does not match yours, look for Live TV in The Roku Channel or among the TV’s inputs. Roku OS feature information
Search for a channel or program
Roku added search in What to Watch and the Live TV Zone for U.S. users in an OS feature rollout dated November 7, 2025. Where available, open one of those areas, enter a network or program name, and select a result. Search can help locate live content, but it does not cover every channel or app uniformly. A result may be a live stream, an on-demand title, an app, a subscription offer, or no match at all. Roku OS feature information

For discovery, the Live TV guide is often more useful than general Roku Search: it presents channels and schedules together rather than making you open apps one by one. If a search does not find a channel, try its full network name and check the Roku Streaming Store for the network’s official app. That app may require a separate account, TV-provider authentication, a subscription, or regional access.
Browse the Live TV Channel Guide
While watching a live streaming or antenna channel, press Left on the remote’s directional pad to open the Live TV Channel Guide. Move up or down to browse channels and left or right to move through programs and listings. Select a program to see details or watch it. Roku says the guide can show programming up to seven days ahead. Live streaming listings in this guide are supported in the United States. Roku’s guide instructions and availability

Internet access is needed for streaming listings and detailed antenna listings. Roku’s guide instructions and availability
Filter the guide to your favorites
Roku documents three guide filters: All channels, Recents, and Favorites. To display favorites, open the guide, open Channel options, choose Filter, then select Favorites. The exact control for adding or removing a channel from the favorites list can vary with the guide interface and device software. Roku’s favorites and channel-list instructions

If a channel seems to have disappeared, switch to All channels first. A Favorites or Recents filter can hide channels without removing them from the lineup.
Get local broadcast channels with a Roku TV and antenna
A free streaming channel and a local broadcast station are different things. Streaming channels arrive over the internet; local stations such as ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, or PBS are received over the air with an HDTV antenna, provided the signal reaches your location. A standard Roku streaming player or stick does not receive antenna broadcasts by itself. The antenna connects to a television tuner, and a Roku TV has an integrated tuner for this purpose.

- Connect an HDTV antenna’s coaxial cable to the Roku TV’s Ant/Cable In port. Connect power if the antenna requires it.
- From Home, open Inputs or Live TV, depending on your interface, then select the Live TV input.
- Choose Scan for channels and let the scan finish.
- If expected stations are missing, reposition the antenna and scan again.
Reception depends on your location, terrain, building materials, antenna placement, and broadcaster signal strength; an antenna cannot guarantee a particular station. Roku’s setup instructions require an HDTV antenna, a channel scan, and internet access for Roku Live TV features and detailed guide information. Roku antenna setup
Streaming channels and antenna channels are not the same
| What you want to watch | How it reaches the TV | What you need | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free streaming live channels | Internet stream, commonly through The Roku Channel or another app | Internet-connected Roku device | Many are ad-supported; the lineup and availability can change. |
| Local broadcast stations | Over-the-air broadcast signal | Roku TV with tuner and an HDTV antenna | Reception depends on location and setup; no monthly TV subscription is inherently required. |
| Live channels inside individual apps | App stream | The app, and sometimes an account or TV-provider login | Some content may be free, while other streams require authentication or payment. |
| Paid live-TV service channels | Subscription service app | Active service plan | Appearing in Roku search or a live-TV area does not make a channel free. |
Why a channel may not appear
- The guide is filtered: Choose All channels instead of Favorites or Recents.
- The channel is hidden: Open Channel options > Manage channels > Manage channel lineup, find the channel, and press OK to unhide it if its box is checked as hidden. Roku’s channel-list instructions
- It is app-only or on-demand: Search the Streaming Store for the network’s official app; its live feed may not be part of the central guide.
- It requires payment or authentication: Check the result’s terms. A channel name in search does not establish that a free live stream is available.
- It is unavailable in your region or has changed: Channel lineups and rights can vary, and a channel may be renamed or removed.
- The device is offline or listings are stale: Confirm internet connectivity, then return to the guide and check again.
- An antenna station is missing: Check reception at your address, reposition the antenna, and rescan.
What to try when Roku Search fails
- Try the full network name or a related program name in Live TV Zone or What to Watch, if available.
- Browse the Live TV Channel Guide directly; search results and guide listings need not show identical options.
- Search the Streaming Store for the network’s official Roku app and review whether it asks for a login, TV-provider authentication, or subscription.
- For a local broadcast affiliate, check whether an antenna connected to a Roku TV can receive it at your location.
Roku’s guide does not list programming from a separate cable or satellite box. If the channel is carried only by a paid live-TV service or a provider-authenticated app, use that service’s supported Roku app rather than assuming the central free guide will unlock it.
