To change menus, set Display Language; to change the spoken track or subtitles Netflix prefers, set Audio and Subtitle Languages. Set both on the profile you use, then refresh Netflix on devices that do not update. A profile preference works across supported devices using that profile, but it cannot add a language a particular title does not offer.
Change Netflix language from a web browser
The browser method is useful when you want to update a profile for use on several devices. Netflix’s interface labels may vary by language or app version; the English labels below are the ones to look for.
- Open Netflix in a browser and go to the Account page.
- Open Profiles and select the profile you want to change.
- Select Languages.
- Under Display Language, choose the language for menus and other interface text.
- Under the audio and subtitle options, choose the preferred Audio and Subtitle Languages.
- Select Save.
- Open Netflix on your other devices. If one still shows the old setting, sign out and back in on that device.
These settings apply to the selected profile, not automatically to everyone using the account. See Netflix’s language-setting instructions.
Change the settings on a TV or streaming device
Change the display language
- Open Netflix and go to the profile-selection screen.
- Highlight the profile you want to edit and select the pencil-shaped Edit icon.
- Select Language, choose the display language, then select Done.
Choose audio or subtitles for a title
- Start playing the show or movie and pause it.
- Open the player controls and select Audio & Subtitles or, on some devices, Other.
- Choose from the audio and subtitle tracks listed for that title.
The exact controls depend on the TV or streaming device. Netflix provides device-specific guidance in its language settings help.

Change language on an Android phone, iPhone, or iPad
- Open the Netflix app and tap My Netflix in the lower-right corner.
- Tap the profile name at the top, then tap Manage Profiles.
- Select the profile you want to edit.
- Tap Display Language to change the app’s interface language.
- Return to the profile settings and tap Audio & Subtitles to set preferred playback languages.
On Android, iPhone, and iPad, these selections save automatically. Menu wording or placement can differ slightly across app versions.
Choose a language while watching a show or movie
Profile preferences tell Netflix what to prioritize; the playback menu lets you choose among the tracks a particular title actually has. To select a track, start playback, tap or click the screen on a phone, tablet, or computer, or use the remote’s up or down button on many TVs. Open Audio & Subtitles and select the available options. Some TV interfaces show these choices directly in playback controls or under Other. You can choose audio and subtitles independently—for example, a dub in one language and subtitles in another—if both tracks are available. See Netflix’s playback-language instructions and its note on the multilingual TV experience.

Why a language may not appear
- The title or region lacks the track. Audio and subtitle availability varies by title and country, in part because of licensing. A saved preference cannot create a dub or subtitle track that is not offered. Netflix explains the possible causes in its language-availability guidance.
- Availability differs by season or episode. Different episodes or seasons may have different language options; localization can also arrive at different times.
- The device may not support that language. Netflix says some older devices may not support languages including Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Romanian, and Vietnamese. Its general guide is that devices manufactured before 2014 may be affected; that is not a guaranteed cutoff.
- You are watching a download. Netflix may initially show only the two most relevant language options for a downloaded title. Delete the download and check the title while streaming to see whether more choices are available.
- The profile language can affect title presentation. Netflix says a profile language matching a language listed for your country may lead it to show only titles with audio or subtitles in that language. Changing the profile language can affect filtering or presentation, but does not change the country catalog or regional licensing. See Netflix’s guidance on seeing titles available in your country.
Fix a language setting that does not stick
- Confirm the profile. Make sure you changed the profile currently selected on the device; each profile has its own preferences.
- Refresh Netflix. Close and reopen the app. If the display language remains unchanged, sign out and back in.
- Check the title’s playback menu. If the desired track is missing there, the saved preference is not the problem; the title, region, device, or download may not support it.
- Compare streaming with a download. Delete the download and check the streaming title if language choices are limited offline.
- Test a different title or episode. Availability can vary between episodes and seasons, so one missing track does not establish that it is missing from the entire series.
- For a Kids title, test the right profile. Netflix says audio and subtitle preferences are handled differently for most Kids titles watched from an adult profile; preferences are saved when viewing from a Kids profile. If a preferred audio language repeatedly fails to save, Netflix recommends playing a title rated Teens or above for two to three minutes. See Netflix’s audio and subtitle guidance.
- If an option is missing on one device, try another supported device. Update the Netflix app or device software if needed. A language that appears on one device but not another may reflect device compatibility.
If you cannot read the current menus, use the browser settings path if possible, relying on a translation tool or the page’s visual layout. On a TV, return to profile selection and look for the pencil-shaped edit icon; translated labels vary by device.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Find titles with audio or subtitles in a language
If your goal is to discover documentaries or other titles already available in a particular language, use Netflix’s language-browse pages for audio or subtitles rather than changing your whole interface. Those pages help find titles with listed language tracks; they do not make unavailable tracks appear on an individual title. Netflix describes language availability and browsing in its language availability help page.
