YouTube Music’s redesigned Cast menu was a 2024 Android rollout, not a new August 2026 feature. Reported widely on April 29, 2024, the update replaced the old centered “Cast to” dialog with a rounded bottom sheet. It made device discovery and switching easier, but initially made the basic “stop casting” action harder to find.
What changed in the Cast menu
The earlier YouTube Music interface opened a centered “Cast to” dialog. The redesigned interface slides up as a rounded bottom sheet and keeps more information visible while you choose a destination.
- Suggested: frequently used or nearby Cast targets appear near the top.
- Other devices: additional TVs, streamers, speakers and displays remain listed below.
- Compact playback preview: the current track takes less space than in the previous playback view.
- Selected device and volume: the active receiver appears with a volume slider.
- Device switching: nearby targets remain visible during a session.
The initial redesign also removed the prominent stop-casting action and, according to the launch report, no longer offered an in-menu play/pause button. Playback could instead be controlled from YouTube Music’s Now Playing screen or Android’s media controls. The original interface details were reported by 9to5Google on April 29, 2024.
Was version 6.49 required?
The redesign was observed around YouTube Music for Android version 6.49, but the broad rollout was controlled server-side. Version 6.49 is therefore useful historical context, not a guaranteed requirement. Updating the app alone did not ensure that every account received the new menu at the same time.

Why “This phone” can be confusing
Suppose music is playing on a television and you open the Cast menu. Choosing This phone or This device generally transfers playback to the handset. It does not always pause the queue or end the Cast session, so audio may continue.
That distinction caused most of the early complaints: moving playback back to the phone was not necessarily the same as stopping playback. In June 2024, YouTube Music began adding an overflow-menu option labelled Disconnect from TV, but that control could disconnect the phone while allowing playback to continue on the Cast speaker. The follow-up was reported at 9to5Google.
How to cast YouTube Music from Android
- Connect the Android phone and the Cast receiver to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Open the YouTube Music app.
- Tap the Cast icon near the profile picture.
- Select the TV, video streamer, speaker, display or audio streamer.
- Start playback.
Google’s official instructions are at YouTube Music Help. Compatible receivers use Chromecast built-in or Google Cast; a standalone YouTube Music app does not need to be installed on the television.

How to stop, disconnect or switch playback

Google notes that labels and available actions depend on the app and device. Its current guidance lists Stop casting, Disconnect, This phone and This device as possible labels: Google Cast controls.

If you only want the music to stop
Pause from Android’s media notification or YouTube Music’s Now Playing screen. You can also use Google Home, a device control or a documented voice command such as “Pause” or “Stop.” Do not assume that Disconnect will stop audio on every receiver.
If you want to move playback
Choose This phone or select another listed Cast target. These options are intended for transferring playback rather than ending it.

Which devices work?
Google lists TVs, video streamers, speakers and audio streamers with Chromecast built-in or Google Cast support. That includes compatible smart TVs, Google TV devices, Chromecast products, Nest speakers and displays, and supported third-party audio equipment. Compatibility is determined by the receiver’s Cast support, not by the redesign itself.

There is no universal “Premium required” rule. Google documents Premium casting and on-demand playback benefits, while free accounts may receive more limited, station-based playback on Google smart speakers and displays. Requirements can vary by destination, content, account and market. Google’s explanation is available at YouTube Music device support and Chromecast audio and speaker guidance.

Why your menu may look different
- The 2024 redesign was server-side, so accounts on similar app versions could receive it at different times.
- App builds, Android versions, geography and account state can affect the interface.
- TVs, speakers and streamers do not expose identical controls.
- The YouTube app received a related Cast redesign later; its menu should not be treated as proof that YouTube Music has the same controls. See the related YouTube report.
Troubleshooting a missing device or failed session
The Cast target does not appear
- Confirm that the phone and receiver use the same Wi-Fi network.
- Check that the receiver is powered on and linked in Google Home where required.
- Update YouTube Music and the receiver’s firmware.
- Restart YouTube Music, the receiver and Google Home.
- Restart the router if the device still does not appear.

Audio continues after selecting “This phone”
Open Android’s media controls or Now Playing and pause the queue. Alternatively, look for Stop casting, use Google Home, or check the Cast menu’s overflow options. A disconnect command may sever the phone connection without stopping the receiver.
Premium playback is unavailable
Verify that YouTube Music is signed in to the Google account carrying the relevant membership and that Google Home uses the expected account. Supervised accounts may not support some YouTube Music features.

What the redesign means for hardware choices
You do not need new hardware to receive the interface if you already own a compatible Cast receiver. A Google TV Streamer, Cast-compatible TV or Nest speaker can be useful for other reasons, but the menu is an app-side change rather than a feature exclusive to a particular product. The Bottom Line
The Android Cast redesign improved device discovery and switching, but its first version obscured a familiar task. Remember the practical distinction: This phone transfers playback, while Stop casting or a separate pause command is what ends it. Because Google’s labels vary by app and receiver, use the control that matches the result you want.
