YouTube’s expanded Shorts rule took effect on October 15, 2024. For standard channels, a newly uploaded video can be classified as a Short when it is square or vertical and no longer than three minutes. The rule does not apply automatically to every video under three minutes, and older qualifying uploads were not retroactively converted.
What changed, and when?
YouTube announced the expansion on October 3, 2024, saying creators would be able to upload Shorts of up to three minutes. The standard-channel rule began on October 15, 2024, and is now an existing policy rather than an upcoming feature. YouTube’s current Help documentation describes the classification and its exceptions at YouTube Help.

Which videos qualify as three-minute Shorts?
For standard channels, all of these conditions matter:
- The video is square or vertical (YouTube’s announcement described this as “square or taller”).
- Its duration is three minutes or less.
- It was uploaded on or after October 15, 2024.
A horizontal 16:9 upload does not become a Short merely because it is shorter than three minutes. A video longer than three minutes is not eligible under the three-minute rule.

Older uploads stay long-form
On standard channels, a qualifying square or vertical video uploaded before October 15, 2024 remains a long-form video. It is not reclassified simply because it meets the newer dimensions and duration limits, so its existing long-form Watch Page and monetization treatment continues under YouTube’s stated policy.
Artist-channel exception
YouTube identifies a separate rule for Official Artist Channels and channels linked to a music Content Owner. Under the current Help documentation, videos uploaded before December 8, 2025 that meet the relevant conditions can continue to be treated as long-form, while qualifying uploads on or after that date are categorized as Shorts. This exception applies to those specific channel relationships, not to every musician or music-focused channel.

How to upload a three-minute Short
YouTube supports uploads through both the mobile app and YouTube Studio. Interface labels can vary by device, app version and account, but the general paths are:
From the YouTube mobile app
- Open YouTube and tap Create.
- Choose the Shorts recording or upload option.
- Select or record a square or vertical video that is no longer than three minutes.
- Add the title, audience setting, visibility and other available details.
- Publish, then check the processed video’s classification.
From YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio.
- Select Create, then Upload videos.
- Choose the square or vertical file.
- Complete the publishing settings and allow processing to finish.
- Confirm how YouTube has classified the upload and review any copyright notices.
Classification does not guarantee placement in the Shorts Feed. Distribution depends on YouTube’s systems and viewer response.

Copyright and music: the biggest risk after one minute
Active claims can block a longer Short
YouTube says a Short longer than one minute with an active Content ID claim, including a manual claim, may be blocked globally, made unavailable for recommendation and made ineligible for monetization until the claim is resolved or the claimed material is removed. YouTube also says the block itself does not create a channel penalty. If the claim is wrong, you can dispute it; otherwise remove the claimed material. Once resolved, the Short can become viewable and eligible for monetization. See YouTube’s current policy.
Shorts Audio Library limits vary by track
For standard channels, songs offered in the Shorts Audio Library can often be used for up to 90 seconds in a three-minute Short, but some tracks are limited to 60 or 30 seconds. The permitted duration is track-specific; a three-minute format does not grant three minutes of use for every song. Details are in YouTube’s music guidance.

Safer audio choices
- Use YouTube’s Shorts Audio Library when the selected track and its stated duration permit it.
- Use the YouTube Audio Library in Studio, checking the individual track’s license and any attribution requirement.
- Use music for which you have documented rights, and retain the license records.
Do not assume that music selectable inside YouTube’s Shorts tools is equally cleared when it is baked into a video edited elsewhere. Licensing can differ between platform-native creation and an imported file.

No. A three-minute Short remains part of the Shorts ecosystem. Eligible Shorts can participate in the Shorts revenue-sharing model, while long-form videos use Watch Page monetization. A Short being longer than one minute does not automatically qualify it for long-form advertising revenue, and duration alone does not establish higher earnings. A blocked Short is not eligible for monetization while the block remains. YouTube Partner Program status, reused-content rules, copyright compliance and advertiser-friendly requirements are separate eligibility questions.

When is the extra time useful?
“Up to three minutes” is a ceiling, not a target. Keep a Short shorter when the idea is a single joke, tip, visual reveal or quick hook. The added room can help with:
- Step-by-step tutorials, recipes and demonstrations
- Educational explanations and reviews
- Storytelling, commentary and serialized narratives
- Before-and-after transformations
- Performances, rehearsals and process videos
Use the time only when it improves comprehension or payoff. Put the premise near the beginning, remove pauses and repeated points, add captions for silent viewing, vary the visuals and end deliberately. Compare retention and engagement in YouTube Analytics rather than assuming that a longer cut will perform better. A Short can also serve as a concise gateway to a related full-length documentary or video.

Being categorized as a Short is not a promise that the video will appear in every Shorts surface, just as a long-form classification does not determine every recommendation outcome.
Pre-publish and troubleshooting checklist
- Not classified as a Short: Check that the file is square or vertical, no longer than three minutes, and uploaded after the applicable cutoff.
- Older video still appears as long-form: That is expected for standard-channel uploads made before October 15, 2024.
- Video blocked after upload: Open the copyright details, identify the active claim, then remove the material or dispute the claim if you have a valid basis.
- Music is restricted: Check the track’s allowed duration; a library song may be limited to 90, 60 or 30 seconds.
- Unexpected claim on imported audio: Review the license for the exact recording and keep proof of permission.
- Analytics look weak: Test a tighter edit and compare retention rather than adding filler to reach three minutes.
YouTube provides Shorts analytics through YouTube Analytics, allowing creators to compare versions and identify where viewers leave.
Bottom line for creators
YouTube Shorts can already run up to three minutes when a new upload is square or vertical and meets the applicable date and channel rules. The expansion gives tutorials, explanations and stories more breathing room, but it does not change the importance of aspect ratio, pacing, classification, music rights or monetization policy. Before publishing, verify the format and duration, use cleared audio, review processing notices and let audience data—not the three-minute maximum—determine the best length.
