YouTube announced six NFL Sunday Ticket improvements on August 16, 2023, ahead of that season’s September 10 kickoff. They covered payment options and student pricing as well as Multiview, live chat and polls, Key Plays catch-up, and NFL highlights in Shorts. This is a look back at that 2023 announcement—not news that all six features are newly arriving in 2026.
The six features YouTube announced
YouTube’s announcement described plans for the 2023 NFL season. Some details, such as device support and student-plan terms, were not fully specified at the time. Read YouTube’s August 16, 2023 announcement.
| Feature | What YouTube said it would do | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly payment plans | Let most viewers pay for Sunday Ticket over time rather than all at once. | Availability varied by state; installments changed payment timing, not necessarily the total price. |
| Student plan | Introduce a discounted purchase option for students. | The announcement did not give a price, eligibility rules, verification process, or exact launch date. |
| More Multiview combinations | Offer more ways to watch multiple Sunday-afternoon games, including combinations involving Sunday Ticket games, NFL RedZone, and local NFL games on YouTube TV. | YouTube offered combinations to choose from; the announcement did not promise an unlimited custom layout. |
| Live chat and polls | Add interactive chat and polls around the viewing experience on mobile and TV devices. | These were interactive elements alongside the game, not changes to the video feed itself. |
| Key Plays | Bring YouTube TV’s catch-up feature to YouTube, helping late viewers see a sequence of important plays before returning to the live game. | YouTube said the YouTube version would be available on TVs only during that season. |
| NFL highlights in Shorts | Show real-time NFL highlights in the Shorts player, with a route to the NFL channel’s Live tab and Sunday Ticket games. | “Real-time” did not come with a stated delay, and Shorts highlights were not a replacement for a full game broadcast. |
How the viewing features worked
Multiview for following several games
Multiview addressed a common Sunday problem: choosing between games happening at the same time. YouTube said viewers could pick from an expanded assortment of combinations. The possibilities described included several out-of-market Sunday Ticket games, RedZone alongside Sunday Ticket games, and local NFL games alongside Sunday Ticket games on YouTube TV.
That made the feature relevant to fantasy football managers, fans following multiple teams, and households trying to share one screen. The limitation matters: more combinations did not mean each viewer could freely select any games and arrange them in any layout. YouTube controlled the options. The current NFL Sunday Ticket page advertises watching up to four games at once and also lists Fantasy View and Key Plays, but that does not establish that every 2023 detail or interface persists unchanged.

Chat and polls alongside the game
Live chat and polls were intended to add fan interaction on mobile and TV. They could make a game feel more communal, but also bring familiar trade-offs: chat can be noisy, distracting, or a source of spoilers. YouTube’s announcement did not spell out detailed moderation, privacy, or availability rules. It also mentioned future NFL Shop integrations separately; those were not one of the six core features announced.
Key Plays for viewers who joined late
Key Plays was aimed at viewers who opened a game after kickoff and wanted a quick catch-up without manually searching through a recording or finding a separate recap. The notable 2023 restriction was device-specific: YouTube said Key Plays on YouTube would be available on TVs only for that season. Current product materials continue to list Key Plays, but they should be consulted for current device support and behavior.

Shorts as a route to live games
YouTube described real-time highlights from every NFL game appearing in Shorts during the season. An NFL channel avatar would have a red “Live” ring; tapping it would take a viewer to the channel’s Live tab, where the viewer could select a Sunday Ticket game. That made Shorts a discovery path into live viewing, not a promise that every play would appear instantly. The announcement gave no precise highlight delay.
Payment options: installments and student pricing
Monthly installments
YouTube said installment payments would begin rolling out on YouTube and YouTube TV over the following week, with availability varying by state. Installments can reduce the amount due upfront, but do not necessarily reduce what the season costs in total. A contemporary Droid Life report cited a 2023 promotional example of $299 paid in four $99.75 installments. Those figures were not in YouTube’s official announcement and are historical, not current pricing.

For a current purchase, check the offer’s total season price, number of payments, location eligibility, and cancellation terms. YouTube’s current product page says installment payments may be unavailable in some locations and may be non-cancelable.
Student plan
The student option was the least specified item in the 2023 announcement: YouTube said it planned to introduce a student plan within about a week but did not publish its price or eligibility requirements there. The YouTube Help Center’s NFL Sunday Ticket information still points to a student-plan option. Students should check the current purchase flow for the actual price, eligibility, and verification requirements rather than relying on the 2023 announcement.

What the 2023 announcement did not mean
- Sunday Ticket is not a substitute for local NFL broadcasts. It focuses on out-of-market Sunday regular-season games; the current terms exclude locally broadcast games and digital-only games.
- It is not a complete package for every NFL game. Sunday Ticket alone should not be assumed to include local games, Sunday Night Football, Monday Night Football, or playoff coverage. Other games depend on the relevant channels or service.
- More Multiview choices did not mean unlimited customization. The 2023 announcement described choices among YouTube-provided combinations.
- Monthly payment did not automatically mean a lower total bill. It spread payments over time; compare the full amount and terms.
- Shorts highlights were not full-game streams. The feature pointed viewers toward live games but did not replace watching the broadcast.
What is current in 2026—and what remains historical
The 2023 announcement is a dated account of what YouTube planned for that season. The current official NFL Sunday Ticket page advertises Multiview, Fantasy View, Key Plays, monthly installments, and unlimited in-home streaming. It does not establish that every announcement-era feature, particularly live polls or NFL Shorts behavior, remains available in the same form.
The same page describes Sunday Ticket as available standalone through YouTube or with YouTube TV. Its displayed offer is time-sensitive: in the August 2026 information provided, new users were shown $240 for the season or $30 per month for eight months, while returning-user pricing was higher. The page says availability varies and payments may be non-cancelable; check the live offer before buying rather than treating those figures as a lasting price.
Best Value
- Note: The complete Game is Not on the DVD just the highlights.
Standalone Sunday Ticket is for out-of-market Sunday games and does not require YouTube TV. The bundle adds YouTube TV’s broader live-TV service, including local and nationally televised games where channels are available in the viewer’s market. An active YouTube TV plan is required for the bundle; canceling that plan removes access to bundled Sunday Ticket. Sunday Ticket purchase availability and YouTube TV availability are described separately in the YouTube Help Center and the YouTube TV Help Center.
Which option fits which viewer?
| Viewer | Likely fit |
|---|---|
| Wants out-of-market Sunday games and already has another provider for local and national games | Standalone NFL Sunday Ticket through YouTube. |
| Wants Sunday Ticket plus local channels and a broader live-TV service | NFL Sunday Ticket bundled with YouTube TV; compare the added subscription cost and local channel availability in the area. |
| Wants rapid scoring coverage across games rather than one uninterrupted game | Consider NFL RedZone where it is offered with Sunday Ticket or through YouTube TV’s Sports Plus route. |
| Runs a bar, restaurant, or other commercial venue | A residential subscription is not appropriate; YouTube directs commercial customers to EverPass Media for commercial rights. |
Before subscribing, verify the current package, market availability, payment schedule, auto-renewal, and refund or cancellation terms on the official purchase page. YouTube’s current terms say subscriptions can auto-renew and that the season may be non-cancelable or nonrefundable.
