YouTube’s 20th-anniversary announcement on April 23, 2025 previewed two television-focused changes: a redesigned YouTube app for TV screens and a “Build a Multiview” feature for selected non-sports programming on YouTube TV. Neither announcement meant that every viewer received the features immediately, and the two products should not be confused.
What YouTube announced
YouTube marked the anniversary of its first uploaded video, “Me at the Zoo”, with a collection of product announcements and milestone statistics. The most significant news for television viewers was a planned redesign of the YouTube app on TV devices and a forthcoming expansion of YouTube TV’s Multiview feature.
YouTube said YouTube TV members would soon be able to create their own Multiview combinations for selected non-sports content. It also described a “TV viewing upgrade” planned for summer 2025, with easier navigation, playback improvements, quality-related changes and more accessible comments, channel information and subscription controls.
The wording matters: these were rollout announcements and previews made on April 23, 2025, not confirmation that all users, devices or regions had received the features.

Custom Multiview is still a limited catalogue
YouTube’s announcement promised that YouTube TV members would be able to build Multiview for selected non-sports programming. The initial rollout was to begin with a small group of popular channels and expand over subsequent months.
That is more flexible than relying only on fixed, platform-created layouts, but “custom” should not be read as unlimited channel selection. YouTube did not promise that viewers could combine any four channels, create every possible combination or use every channel available in their local YouTube TV lineup.
YouTube TV’s earlier “Build a Multiview” implementation for sports used preselected games and combinations. Reporting on that system noted that Multiview combinations are processed on YouTube’s servers, while regional feeds, local-channel differences, sports rights and demand can limit which combinations are available. The 2025 announcement therefore points to user choice within an eligible catalogue, not an unrestricted four-way channel matrix.

The expansion was also specifically described as applying to selected non-sports content. It should not be taken as evidence that all entertainment channels or all sports programming would be equally eligible.

What the TV app redesign changes
YouTube previewed a more TV-focused player and navigation experience rather than announcing a separate streaming service. The stated goals included:
- easier navigation;
- playback improvements;
- quality-related tweaks;
- streamlined access to comments;
- more visible channel information; and
- easier access to Subscribe.
The shown design reorganized controls below the seek bar into three areas. Channel information, the video description and Subscribe controls appeared on the left; previous, play/pause and next controls were centered; and other playback controls appeared on the right. The title and related information were shown toward the upper-left portion of the player.

- Chromecast is easy to install and compatible with almost any TV that has an HDMI port; to get started, just plug it into your TV’s HDMI port, connect to Wi-Fi, and start streaming
This was a preview, not a guarantee of the final interface. YouTube did not specify every supported television brand, streaming stick, game console or other device. It also did not say whether the redesign would arrive for all platforms simultaneously, whether the controls would be optional or what each “quality” improvement would involve.

Do you need YouTube Premium or YouTube TV?
That depends on the feature:
- YouTube TV: Required for the announced Multiview functionality. YouTube TV is the separate live-television service with live channels, DVR and regional availability.
- YouTube Premium: Associated with ad-free YouTube and YouTube Music benefits, including the announced 4x mobile playback speed. Premium does not provide YouTube TV’s live-channel service.
- No paid subscription: A YouTube TV or Premium membership was not presented as a general requirement for using the standard YouTube app on a television.
A YouTube TV membership does not automatically include YouTube Premium, and YouTube Premium does not automatically include YouTube TV. YouTube’s YouTube TV product page treats them as separate products, although Premium members can watch YouTube content on YouTube TV without ads.
YouTube TV is primarily a U.S.-oriented service, and its channel lineup depends on location. Local stations and regional sports rights can affect both the channels a subscriber receives and the usefulness of Multiview. Enter a ZIP code on the official service page to check local availability.

YouTube identified April 23, 2005—the upload date of “Me at the Zoo”—as the starting point for its 20th anniversary. In its own figures, the company said the platform had passed 20 billion uploaded videos, including music videos, Shorts and podcasts, and that more than 20 million videos were uploaded each day as of April 2025.
YouTube also reported more than 100 million comments per day in 2024, creators hearting comments from an average of 10 million viewers daily in 2024, more than 3.5 billion daily likes in 2024 and more than 300 music videos in the billion-views club. These are company-supplied statistics, not independently audited measurements, so the dates and attribution matter.
YouTube Music and YouTube Kids were also described as reaching their 10-year anniversaries in 2025.

What remained unknown
The announcement did not establish:
- an exact universal launch date for either TV feature;
- the full list of Multiview-eligible channels;
- whether viewers could combine any channels they wanted;
- supported television brands, streaming devices or consoles;
- geographic availability;
- whether every user would receive the redesign at the same time; or
- whether all videos would expose the same comments, channel details or playback controls.
Those omissions are especially important for YouTube TV subscribers because local feeds, regional rights and server-side processing can affect what the service can offer. A subscriber should treat the announcement as a roadmap and check the current YouTube TV interface for actual availability.
Choosing the relevant subscription
Choose YouTube TV if your goal is live television and Multiview. Choose YouTube Premium if you want ad-free YouTube, background playback, offline viewing, YouTube Music and Premium-related playback features. Consider YouTube TV add-ons only for their separately advertised benefits; the anniversary announcement did not say that 4K Plus was required for Multiview or the TV redesign.
Subscription prices, promotions and availability change over time, and YouTube TV’s lineup varies by ZIP code. Check the official pages before subscribing.
