Snap’s “2024 in a Snap,” published on December 9, 2024, was a public year-end report about platform-wide trends—not a personalized account of your own Snaps. It highlighted Snapchat’s role in sports fandom, music, beauty, travel, AR creation and video discovery, while a separate Snapchat Recap turned some users’ saved Memories into a personal Story.

What “2024 in a Snap” covered

Snap’s newsroom retrospective summarized activity and interests on Snapchat during 2024. It described the platform as having more than 850 million monthly active users at the time the article was published. The report mixed global viewing figures with US-based rankings and survey findings, so its numbers should not be treated as one uniform measure of what every Snapchatter did.

The public report and the personal Recap are different products. The public article presented aggregate trends; a Recap, when generated for an account, is a Story assembled from that user’s saved Memories. Snapchat’s support page also distinguishes Recaps from Flashback Memories, a separate feature that resurfaces older saved Snaps. The figures behind Snapchat’s 2024 trends

Snap’s figures describe different actions: viewing time, creation, selection and survey responses. They are not interchangeable, and viewing time does not reveal how many unique people watched.

  • Travel: More than 73 million hours of travel content were viewed on Spotlight globally during 2024.
  • Sports: Snap reported more than 25 million minutes spent on sports content on Spotlight globally, “on average.” The report’s phrasing does not supply a clearer averaging interval, so this should not be read as a total for the year.
  • AR creation: More than 800,000 Snaps were created with an NBA jersey try-on Lens.
  • Community Lenses: Snap later reported that more than 200 million Spotlight videos created in 2024 featured community-made Lenses.

The public report named Pink Dog, Soft Filter and Scribble World among the most selected non-sponsored Lenses in the US. “Selected” is not the same as “shared” or “used.” Snap also highlighted sponsored experiences, including “Venom: The Last Dance” and campaigns associated with Bojangles, Charli XCX and Katy Perry; those are advertising examples, not evidence of organic Lens popularity. Sports became a social and AR experience

Snap’s sports narrative was about more than watching highlights. The company described fans reacting to live moments, sharing with friends and following teams, leagues, athletes and creators. It said 93% of US Snapchatters surveyed felt closer to favorite teams or athletes because they followed them on social media; that is a survey result, not a count of all Snapchat users.

Snap separately reported that more than 225 million Snapchatters engaged with more than 25 Olympic-related AR experiences during the Paris 2024 Games. Its sports partnerships included the NFL, NBA and WNBA. Together with the NBA jersey try-on Lens, these examples show how Snap pitched AR as a way to participate in fandom, not just watch it. Music, beauty and travel blended discovery with creation

Music as a visual format

Snap said 79% of US Snapchatters surveyed were passionate about music. The retrospective pointed to Charli XCX’s 360 Lens among the most shared music Lenses and listed “Friday, I’m in Love” by The Cure, “I like the way you kiss me” by Artemas, “MILLION DOLLAR BABY” by Tommy Richman and “Popular” by The Weeknd and Madonna among popular US creation tracks.

That list reflects tracks used in Snapchat content creation, not a ranking of the year’s most-streamed music overall. In the app, audio can become a visual meme or identity marker when paired with a Lens and shared with friends.

Beauty as try-on, viewing and feedback

Snap said beauty Lenses generated higher engagement in the US than the average AR Lens, alongside the global Spotlight beauty watch-time figure. Its examples connect product discovery, virtual try-on and friend-to-friend feedback with sponsored brand experiences. These measures do not establish purchases or conversion rates.

Travel as inspiration and sharing

Snap framed Spotlight travel viewing and Sponsored AR Lenses as ways to find destination inspiration and share trips, citing experiences from VisitScotland and Las Vegas. That is a social discovery role rather than a claim that Snapchat functioned as a booking service.

AR and generative AI moved into the platform’s core story

Snap’s 2024 strategy extended AR from playful effects into try-ons, branded entertainment, travel promotion and creator tools. In its Q4 results, the company said more than 400 million Snapchatters engaged with new generative-AI Lenses more than 4 billion times in Q4 2024. “Engaged” should not be silently converted into a count of unique people or a full-year figure.

Snap also introduced its fifth-generation Spectacles and Snap OS in 2024, added generative-AI tools for Lens creators and developers, and launched its first branded Dreams AI Lens with partners including Uber Eats and Tinder. The company said its first pre-generated AI Lens reduced GPU utilization during generation. These developments sit alongside traditional computer-vision and creator-built Lenses; not every AR experience was generative AI. What the retrospective suggests about Snap’s business

The year-end report was also a positioning exercise: Snap presented Snapchat as a messaging app, a discovery feed, an AR platform and a place for creators and brands to reach audiences.

Spotlight and discovery

Snap reported that Spotlight averaged more than 500 million monthly active users in Q3 2024, up 21% year over year. The figure supports the idea that short-form video had become a major part of Snapchat’s reach, alongside its private communication features. Snap’s Q3 2024 results

Advertising and AR

Sponsored Lenses, Sponsored Snaps and Promoted Places illustrate the commercial side of the categories Snap celebrated. Snap claimed AR advertising formats delivered more than five times the active attention of other social-media platforms in its cited comparison; this is a company-reported advertising claim, not an independently established universal benchmark. Its August 2024 ad-platform update also described AR Extensions that could carry AR advertising beyond the camera experience. Snap for Business’s August 2024 update

Creators and subscriptions

Snap announced a unified creator monetization program that let eligible creators monetize Spotlight videos, building on its Stories revenue program. The company also reported that “Other Revenue,” most of which it said consisted of Snapchat+ subscription revenue, grew 131% year over year in 2024. That indicates diversification efforts, not a replacement for advertising. Snap’s full-year results · Snap’s Q4 earnings slides

Financial context and limits

Snap reported $5.36 billion in full-year 2024 revenue. Its 2024 Form 10-K described advertising revenue growth as associated with roughly 16% growth in global ad impressions, partly offset by an approximately 4% decline in cost per advertising impression. In Q4, Snap said Sponsored Snaps and Promoted Places delivered an average 30% increase in US reach for advertising partners. In Q2 2024, it said the number of active advertisers more than doubled year over year. These are useful business context, but the year-end trend report itself is not an independent assessment of company performance. How to find your personal Snapchat Recap

A Recap is built from Snaps saved to Memories. Snap says it may include places, activities and friends reflected in that saved content; it does not represent every image or video on a phone.

  1. Open Snapchat’s mobile app.
  2. From the Camera screen, swipe up to open Memories.
  3. Look for a Recap Story there if Snapchat generated one for the account.

Snap’s help page has more detail on what a Snapchat Recap is and finding saved Snaps in Memories.

If a Recap is missing or will not load

  1. Stay on the Memories page while connected to Wi-Fi so the content can finish loading.
  2. Quit Snapchat and reopen it.
  3. Update the app to the latest version available for your device.
  4. If saved Memories themselves are missing, clear Snapchat’s cache and restart the device. Snapchat says lost or deleted Memories cannot be recovered.

Camera Roll media is not backed up to Memories, so a Recap should not be expected to include the phone’s entire camera library. Snapchat provides instructions to download data from Snapchat; this is distinct from recreating a Recap.

Why some accounts have no Recap

  • Snapchat does not generate a Recap for every user; availability depends partly on how many Memories were saved.
  • Recaps are not available upon request and are offered for a limited time.
  • My Eyes Only content is excluded.
  • Dismissing or hiding a Recap removes it permanently, and Snapchat does not offer a way to regenerate it on demand.

These limitations are set out in Snapchat’s Recap support guidance.

What the 2024 retrospective really revealed

Snap’s account of 2024 was not simply about disappearing photos. It described a platform trying to connect close-friend communication with algorithmic video discovery, AR-mediated self-expression, sports and music fandom, creator publishing and advertising. The report’s strongest evidence is for activity Snap measured on its own services; survey results and commercial attention claims need their stated scope and attribution. For an individual user, the personal Recap was a separate, limited Memories feature—not a private version of the public report.
