The six-episode second series premiered on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on Sunday, May 17, 2026, at 8:15 p.m., and its finale aired on June 21. The ending solves Rachel Jenkins’s murder while leaving John Chapel and Janie Mallowan temporarily separated rather than closing the door on another series.
Spoiler warning: The ending explanation below reveals the killer, the insurance-fraud subplot and the future of both central characters.

What is Death Valley about?
Created and written by Paul Doolan, Death Valley is a Welsh comedy murder mystery built around an unusual investigative partnership. Timothy Spall plays John Chapel, a retired television detective who once portrayed the fictional screen sleuth Caesar. Gwyneth Keyworth plays Janie Mallowan, a serving police detective who approaches cases through evidence, procedure and police work.
John’s television career gave him a highly developed instinct for reading people and recognizing the shape of a mystery. Janie is more disciplined and methodical. Their contrasting methods form the show’s central comic and detective engine: Janie works within the rules while John applies the psychological observations he developed as an actor playing a famous fictional detective.

The series generally follows a case-of-the-week format. Each episode introduces a new murder, a different local community and a fresh group of suspects, while the continuing relationship between John and Janie supplies the longer-running character story.
The returning supporting cast includes Steffan Rhodri as DCI Barry Clarke, Alexandria Riley as Helen Baxter, Melanie Walters as Yvonne Mallowan and Rithvik Andugula as DC Evan Chaudhry.
Why was Death Valley renewed?
The second series was a genuine BBC commission, not an online rumor or an informal prediction. The BBC ordered six additional 45-minute episodes, with Spall and Keyworth returning as John and Janie. Regular supporting performers also came back, and production began in Wales in August 2025.
The renewal followed a strong response to the first run. Contemporary coverage described Series 1 as a record-breaking BBC comedy success, and the BBC’s 2024–25 annual report listed Death Valley among the programmes commissioned and produced through BBC Wales.

Interviews with the cast and creator described John as an official police consultant in the new series, so the show no longer needs to re-establish the basic reason for his involvement in every case. The relationship between the two detectives also becomes more emotionally complicated, although the actors described it as closer to a sibling-like partnership than a conventional romance.
Death Valley Series 2 episode guide
The second series continues to move John and Janie through distinct Welsh settings and unusual murder investigations:
- Episode 1: A man is found dead while serving community service. The case brings Janie and John back together after a period apart.
- Episode 2: A chef dies in an arson attack at his restaurant, taking the investigation to a small fishing village.
- Episode 3: A runner overdoses in an actor’s trailer during the production of a Welsh television drama.
- Episode 4: The detectives investigate the murder of a New Age commune founder. The case also brings Janie back into contact with her estranged father.
- Episode 5: A police rehabilitation course is locked down after an attendee is found dead inside CID.
- Episode 6: A death at a rugby-club memorial service leads to another body and a murder investigation involving the club’s members.
Death Valley Series 2 finale ending explained
The finale’s main victim is Rachel Jenkins, the chair of a rugby club. She is found dead after apparently being struck with a trophy. John and Janie eventually present their deductions in a theatrical reconstruction inspired by John’s Caesar persona, but the case contains two overlapping mysteries: an insurance fraud and Rachel’s actual murder.

Who killed Rachel Jenkins?
Josh is the person who killed Rachel. He is the reluctant rugby player and Terry’s son. Rachel had accidentally picked up Josh’s bag and discovered that he was illegally using steroids. Josh had been taking them under pressure from his father, who wanted him to become bigger and perform better as a rugby player.

The trophy initially appears to be the obvious clue in the case, but the finale’s reconstruction shows how the investigators connect the motive, Josh’s secret and the opportunity to the murder.
What happened with Dennis and Sue?
Dennis’s supposed death turns out to be part of a separate insurance scam. Dennis is alive: he and Sue staged his death so they could collect a life-insurance payout.
The fraud becomes connected to Rachel because she discovers Dennis while changing a pub barrel. Sue then tries to poison Rachel with rum to protect the scheme. Rachel does not drink the poisoned rum, but Dennis and Sue still face consequences for the conspiracy-to-murder plot. Their actions create a second criminal thread in the finale, but they are not responsible for the fatal attack that killed Rachel.
Does Janie leave Wales?
No. Janie decides to stay in Wales. During Series 2, she has been considering spending a year abroad with her estranged father as they begin to repair their relationship. Her father invites her to Portugal, and Janie initially agrees to go.

By the end of the finale, however, Janie realizes that leaving for a year is not the right decision for her. She tells her father that she will remain in Wales. The choice does not undo their reconciliation: she preserves the relationship while declining the proposed move.
Why are John and Janie separated at the end?
Janie goes to John’s house intending to tell him that she is staying in Wales. Instead, John reveals that he has secured an acting role in a major Netflix production and will be working in Toronto for at least a couple of months.

The pair are therefore separated by work and geography, not by a permanent falling-out. Janie says they can stay in contact through FaceTime and visit each other. The ending gives the partnership a temporary logistical problem while keeping both characters available for a future series.
Is Death Valley Series 3 happening?
Series 3 is not officially confirmed. As of August 12, 2026, the BBC had announced neither a third-series commission nor a release date.
The Series 2 finale gives viewers reasons to think another run is possible. Janie remains in Wales, John is expected to return after his Toronto production, and the central detective partnership is still intact. Those are narrative possibilities, not evidence that the BBC has ordered Series 3.
A possible May 2027 return has been suggested because both existing series began in May, but that is speculation rather than an announced broadcast date. Treat any page presenting May 2027 as confirmed with caution unless it cites a new BBC or BBC Studios announcement.
How to watch Death Valley in the UK
BBC iPlayer
BBC iPlayer is the official UK catch-up route for Death Valley, while BBC One carried the linear broadcast. Watching or downloading programmes on BBC iPlayer requires viewers to be covered by a valid UK TV Licence.
Availability on iPlayer can be time-limited, so viewers should check the current programme page rather than assume that every episode will remain indefinitely. The BBC’s service rules also matter for people travelling: BBC iPlayer is a UK service, and TV Licensing guidance says viewers cannot stream or download programmes on iPlayer while abroad. Previously downloaded programmes may remain available for a limited period during travel, but that should not be treated as a way to access the service internationally.

BritBox’s official US listing confirms that Series 1 is available, with all episodes streaming. It identifies the programme as a 2025–2026 BBC mystery title and lists Timothy Spall, Gwyneth Keyworth, Rithvik Andugula and Paul Doolan among the principal cast and crew.

That official listing did not confirm Series 2 in the evidence reviewed for this article. Some secondary streaming guides have suggested a later 2026 BritBox North America release, but a reported date is not the same as a current official catalogue listing. US viewers should check the live BritBox catalogue for the relevant season before subscribing or assuming that Series 2 is included.
Amazon Prime Video may also display BritBox as a channel or offer individual digital episodes in some territories. Those listings vary by account geography and licensing agreement, so Amazon should not be presented as a confirmed Series 2 destination without checking the reader’s local storefront.
How to watch Death Valley in other countries
There is no single international home for the series confirmed by the available evidence. Rights are licensed territory by territory, which means the correct service may be a local broadcaster rather than BBC iPlayer.

BBC iPlayer should not be described as a lawful international streaming service. A VPN may advertise a way around geographic restrictions, but using one does not change the BBC’s UK-only service rules or TV Licensing guidance. Yes, but the physical release is Series 1 only. Death Valley – Series 1 was released on DVD in the UK on June 30, 2025, as a two-disc BBC edition with catalogue number BBCDVD4623.
The release includes English subtitles and bonus material such as Creating Death Valley, The Odd Couple Detectives of Death Valley and Death Valley: Scripting A Whodunnit? It can be a useful option for collectors or viewers who want an offline copy, but it does not contain any of the six Series 2 episodes.
It is a Region 2 DVD. Viewers in the United States and other regions should check their player’s compatibility before buying an imported copy; a compatible or multiregion player may be required. The catalogue and stock status of physical retailers can change, so check the edition details carefully before ordering.
What to expect next
