Cross Creator Ben Watkins’ Season 2 Update Explained: ‘Bitter Fruit’ Was Already Filmed

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ben Watkins’ major Cross Season 2 update was that the season was already filmed and in post-production when he spoke to Collider in November 2024. Watkins said the writers’ room had begun in November, filming started in April 2024, production wrapped in September, and the season was internally known as Bitter Fruit. That update is now historical: Season 2 premiered on February 11, 2026, concluded with its eighth episode on March 18, and all eight episodes are streaming on Prime Video.

The official title is simply Cross, the Prime Video crime thriller created and run by Watkins, with Aldis Hodge playing detective and forensic psychologist Alex Cross. The series is based on characters from James Patterson’s Alex Cross novels, but its television mysteries are original rather than direct adaptations of individual books.

What Ben Watkins actually revealed about Season 2

In a Collider interview published on November 20, 2024, Ben Watkins confirmed that Cross Season 2 was much further along than viewers realized. It was not merely being planned, and it was not waiting for Amazon to decide whether to order it.

  • The writers’ room began in November.
  • Filming began in April 2024.
  • Production finished in September 2024.
  • Post-production was underway by the November interview.

Watkins also identified the season by its internal or thematic title, Bitter Fruit. In other words, the headline-making revelation was that Amazon had filmed an entire second season before the first season had even premiered for the public.

Amazon Basics Full Motion Articulating TV Wall Mount, with Swivel and Tilt, for 26" to 55" TVs and Flat Panels up to 80 Lbs, VESA Compatible, Single Stud, Black
  • Important: Watch the video and learn the”Designed for" details listed below!
  • Designed for concrete, brick and wood studs wall (single stud).
  • Designed for TVs up to 80 lbs (36.3 KG) and display sized 26" - 55" (66 CM - 140 CM).
  • Designed for VESA sized from 3.9'' x 3.9'' through 15.7'' x 15.7''.
  • Comfortable View with tilt range from +10° to -5°.

There is an important distinction between “filmed” and “ready to stream.” Principal photography had ended, but editing, visual effects, music, legal clearances, localization, marketing, and release scheduling could still take many months. The eventual gap between Watkins’ confirmation and the premiere demonstrates why a completed shoot was not the same thing as an imminent release.

Was Cross officially renewed?

Yes. Prime Video renewed Cross for an eight-episode second season on April 30, 2024—months before Season 1 debuted. TVLine reported the renewal at the time.

That sequence matters. Amazon did not announce a speculative follow-up after the show became a hit; it commissioned Season 2 early enough for the writers’ room, production, and post-production to be well underway by the time audiences watched Season 1. Season 1 eventually premiered on November 14, 2024.

Amazon later said that Season 1 reached more than 40 million viewers globally during its first 20 days. That is an Amazon-reported worldwide figure, not a Nielsen rating or an independently audited domestic audience measurement, but it helps explain the level of confidence behind the early renewal.

What does the title ‘Bitter Fruit’ mean?

Bitter Fruit is not being presented as the title of a James Patterson novel that Season 2 directly adapts. Watkins has described the show’s seasons as original mysteries built around Patterson’s characters and world.

The title is instead a thematic signpost. Season 2 examines what happens when people pursue justice outside the legal system, particularly when revenge begins with a seemingly righteous motive and turns into something destructive. The central tension is between lawful justice and personal justice: who gets to punish wrongdoing, what happens when institutions fail, and whether a morally appealing goal can justify violent methods.

In a Los Angeles Times discussion of Season 2, Watkins explained that the story is concerned with vengeance and vigilantism, including the point at which people who believe they are correcting injustice go too far.

Does Season 2 continue the Fanboy Killer story?

Not as its central mystery. Season 1’s main serial killer was Ed “Fanboy” Ramsey, played by Ryan Eggold. Season 2 moves to a new case involving a vigilante who targets wealthy and corrupt figures.

Contemporaneous coverage discussed whether Eggold might return and whether Ramsey could remain part of the broader story. That possibility should not be confused with the season’s main premise, however. Season 2 is structured around a new investigation rather than another primary manhunt for the Fanboy Killer. The shift also reflects Watkins’ stated intention to treat each season as a new Alex Cross case while continuing the characters’ personal arcs.

So the best short answer is: Cross Season 2 does not simply pick up the Fanboy Killer plot as its main storyline, although the show can still carry forward consequences and relationships established in Season 1.

What is Season 2 about?

The season begins when billionaire business titan Lance Durand, played by Matthew Lillard, receives a death threat. The threat is connected to the murder of a wealthy playboy, leading Alex Cross and FBI Agent Kayla Craig into an investigation involving powerful people and a vigilante campaign.

The official premise centers on a figure targeting corrupt billionaire magnates. As the case develops, the season broadens beyond a conventional serial-killer investigation to explore:

  • human trafficking;
  • exploitative labor and child labor;
  • corporate abuse and concentrated wealth;
  • the protection that money and status can provide; and
  • the moral danger of responding to exploitation through private violence.

Watkins said the season had been written before some of those subjects became especially prominent in the surrounding news cycle. Its relevance was therefore not intended as a prediction of specific real-world events. The show’s billionaire and exploitation storyline simply arrived during a period when those issues were receiving unusually intense public attention. TheWrap’s interview with Watkins and a BET discussion both address that context.

Season 2 also gives John Sampson a more developed personal storyline. Watkins said he wanted the series to expand its ensemble rather than keep every major development exclusively centered on Cross. That broader approach gives Sampson, Kayla, and other members of the team more room to carry emotional and investigative stakes of their own.

Season 2 cast

Returning cast members include:

  • Aldis Hodge as Alex Cross;
  • Isaiah Mustafa as John Sampson;
  • Alona Tal as Kayla Craig;
  • Samantha Walkes;
  • Juanita Jennings;
  • Caleb Elijah;
  • Melody Hurd; and
  • Johnny Ray Gill.

New Season 2 additions include:

  • Matthew Lillard as Lance Durand;
  • Jeanine Mason; and
  • Wes Chatham.

The original Season 2 reporting also noted that executive producers Jim Dunn and Sam Ernst were elevated to co-showrunners alongside Watkins. The full cast and character information is available in Amazon’s official Cross guide.

From renewal to streaming: the complete Season 2 timeline

Date What happened
October 27, 2022 Prime Video ordered the series, with Aldis Hodge attached as Alex Cross and Ben Watkins as showrunner.
April 30, 2024 Prime Video renewed Cross for Season 2 before Season 1 premiered.
April 2024 Season 2 filming began, according to Watkins.
September 2024 Production wrapped.
November 14, 2024 Season 1 premiered on Prime Video.
November 20, 2024 Collider published Watkins’ confirmation that Season 2 had been filmed and was in post-production. He also identified its internal title as Bitter Fruit.
October 9, 2025 Prime Video announced the February 11, 2026 premiere date and released a Season 2 teaser.
January 8, 2026 Prime Video released the official Season 2 trailer.
February 11, 2026 Season 2 premiered with three episodes.
March 18, 2026 The eighth and final episode was released. Prime Video also renewed the series for Season 3.

The public record supports a long interval between filming and release, but it does not establish that Season 2 was formally delayed. Amazon had not announced a previous premiere date that was later moved, so “delayed” would be stronger than the available evidence allows.

Season 2 release schedule

Unlike Season 1, which arrived as an eight-episode binge release, Season 2 used a hybrid rollout: three episodes premiered on February 11, followed by one new episode each week.

Episode Title Release date
1 “Harrow” February 11, 2026
2 “Scatter” February 11, 2026
3 “Feed” February 11, 2026
4 “Harden” February 18, 2026
5 “Climb” February 25, 2026
6 “Gather” March 4, 2026
7 “Winnow” March 11, 2026
8 “Quemar” March 18, 2026

These dates and titles come from Prime Video’s official Season 2 episode listing. A February 2026 Amazon monthly roundup listed Cross under February 6, but the episode page, Prime Video’s release materials, and contemporaneous reporting identify February 11 as the premiere date. February 6 appears to be an inconsistent catalog or roundup date rather than the public launch date.

Where can you watch Cross Season 2?

All eight episodes of Season 2 are streaming exclusively on Prime Video. The series is available in more than 240 countries and territories, subject to local catalog availability. Amazon’s viewing guide provides the current streaming information.

Because the complete season is now available, viewers no longer need to follow the original weekly schedule. The practical viewing order is simply Season 1 followed by Season 2, although the second season’s central case is distinct from the Fanboy Killer investigation.

Spoilers: what Season 2 sets up

The completed season resolves its central questions around the vigilante campaign, Luz’s identity, Lance Durand’s crimes, and Kayla’s decisions. Its most consequential endpoint for the continuing series is Alex Cross turning in his badge.

Watkins later said that Alex’s decision was not part of his original plan for the ending. It became a major creative choice that will shape the direction of Season 3. His post-finale explanation is available through Us Weekly.

As of August 10, 2026, Season 3 is in production but has no officially announced release date. There is no confirmed basis for saying it will premiere in 2027. Watkins’ earlier comments about having a four-year plan and hoping the series could eventually run for 10 seasons describe creative ambitions, not guaranteed renewals or a fixed schedule. At present, Season 3 is the only officially confirmed future season.

The bottom line on Watkins’ “major update”

The November 2024 news was significant because Watkins revealed that Cross Season 2 had already completed filming before Season 1 premiered. The season’s writers’ room began in November, filming ran from April through September 2024, and post-production was underway when he spoke with Collider. He also gave the season its internal thematic label: Bitter Fruit.

That information is no longer a prediction about whether Season 2 would happen. The season premiered on February 11, 2026, introduced a new vigilante-centered case involving Lance Durand, and finished its eight-episode run on March 18. All episodes are now available on Prime Video, while the renewed third season remains in production without a release date.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is “Bitter Fruit” a James Patterson Alex Cross book?

No. “Bitter Fruit” was the internal or thematic title Ben Watkins used for Cross Season 2. The television series uses Patterson’s Alex Cross characters and world but tells original mysteries rather than directly adapting one specific novel per season.

Did Cross Season 2 continue the Fanboy Killer storyline?

Not as its central mystery. Season 1 focused on Ed “Fanboy” Ramsey, played by Ryan Eggold. Season 2 centers on a new vigilante targeting corrupt billionaires, although the series can still carry forward consequences and character threads from Season 1.

When did Cross Season 2 premiere?

Season 2 premiered on February 11, 2026, with three episodes. The remaining five episodes were released weekly, and the finale arrived on March 18, 2026.

Is Cross Season 2 streaming now?

Yes. All eight Season 2 episodes are currently available on Prime Video.

Has Cross been renewed for Season 3?

Yes. Prime Video ordered an eight-episode Season 3 on March 18, 2026. Filming is underway, but as of August 10, 2026, Prime Video had not announced a release date.

The Bottom Line

Ben Watkins’ original update was that Cross Season 2—internally titled Bitter Fruit—had already wrapped filming and entered post-production by November 2024. The season has since aired in full: all eight episodes are streaming on Prime Video, and Season 3 is in production without a confirmed premiere date.
