In 2016, Saya looked less like a conventional computer-generated character and more like a person caught under studio lighting. Created by Japanese CG artists Teruyuki and Yuka Ishikawa, who work as TELYUKA, the photorealistic schoolgirl became widely known for the fine detail in her skin, eyes, hair and clothing.
Her first public appearance in motion took place at CEATEC JAPAN 2016, where Sharp displayed an approximately 90-second prerecorded video on an 8K monitor. The demonstration showed Saya turning, smiling and changing expressions in a museum-like environment—but it also revealed how difficult it was to make every part of a digital human move convincingly.

The clip embedded in contemporary reports lasts about a minute and a half. Only several tens of seconds show Saya moving; the rest establishes the setting and presentation. She stands against largely live-action backgrounds, turns her head and upper body, smiles and shifts through several facial expressions.
Sharp presented the footage in its booth at CEATEC JAPAN 2016 in Chiba, Japan. Contemporary coverage appeared between October 4 and 7, 2016. The point was not to demonstrate an autonomous robot or an artificial person, but to show how far a highly detailed 3D character could be pushed toward a human appearance on an 8K display.

Who created Saya?
Saya was created by Tokyo-based husband-and-wife CG artists Teruyuki Ishikawa and Yuka Ishikawa, working under the name TELYUKA. The character’s appearance was built digitally, with textures hand-painted by the artists rather than derived from photographs.
That process helped TELYUKA control the details that make the face distinctive: subtle color variation in the skin, the texture of the hair, the shape of the eyes and the small changes around the mouth. Saya’s polished appearance initially drew attention through still images, but motion introduced a much harder test. A face can look convincing in a single frame; movement exposes problems in timing, weight, cloth, hair and facial expression.
How the 2016 demonstration was made
TELYUKA and Sharp began collaborating in spring 2016. Work on converting Saya into a moving video began in August, with motion capture assistance from Toei Zukun Laboratory.

The footage should not be mistaken for a fully real-time rendering demonstration. It was a prerecorded video. Later descriptions of the project also noted that producing super-high-resolution CG could require hours of rendering for a single second of material, underlining the difference between a carefully rendered sequence and an interactive digital human.

Saya’s face was the strongest part of the demonstration. Her skin, hair textures, eyes and changing expressions gave the character an unusually lifelike presence for 2016. Her body movement also appeared convincing in several moments, particularly when she turned and acknowledged the camera.
But the illusion was not complete. Observers noticed that her hair and clothing could look stiff, especially during the turn. The limitations are important: the clip did not prove that Saya had eliminated the uncanny valley. Instead, it showed a character moving close enough to human appearance that small mismatches became easy to notice.

Hair and fabric are particularly revealing in computer graphics. They must respond to acceleration, gravity, contact and changes in direction. If they remain too fixed while the body moves, viewers instinctively read the result as artificial. A highly detailed face can therefore make mechanical-looking clothing or hair more obvious, not less.
The purpose of the exhibit
The stated technical ambition was to make Saya appear more human while avoiding the uncanny valley—the unsettling reaction that can occur when a digital figure looks almost, but not quite, like a real person.
Sharp’s 8K presentation emphasized visual detail, while the combination of a CG character and mostly live-action backgrounds gave the scene a familiar physical context. That contrast made Saya easier to compare with a real person, but it also made any stiffness in her animation more visible.

It is also worth separating the 2016 demonstration from later developments. Saya was not an AI-generated person, a robot or a real teenager. She was a computer-generated 3D character. Later projects explored AI-assisted facial-expression and gaze interaction, but those capabilities belong to subsequent stages of the Saya project, not to the original CEATEC motion presentation.

The video is valuable as a snapshot of a transitional moment in digital character production. Still images could already make Saya look remarkably human, but animation demanded a more complete solution: a face that could express emotion, a body that could carry weight, and hair and clothes that reacted naturally.
That tension is what makes the footage more interesting than a simple “photorealistic CGI” showcase. It presents both the achievement and the remaining gap. Saya’s facial detail was extraordinary for its time, while the rigid movement of some secondary elements reminded viewers that realism is not one feature. It is the combined result of lighting, texture, anatomy, timing, physics and performance.
