Has Train to Busan 3 been confirmed?
No. No Korean distributor, production company, filmmaker, cast member, or major trade publication has confirmed that the film is in development or production.
That also means there is no reliable information about:

- a director attachment;
- returning actors;
- the story or setting;
- production dates; or
- a theatrical or streaming release date.
Articles and videos that list 2024, 2025, 2026, or 2027 as a release year are not reporting a verified schedule unless they cite a newer official announcement. No such announcement has been confirmed in the available sources.
What Yeon Sang-ho has actually said
In a 2021 interview, Yeon Sang-ho said he had ideas for another film set in the Train to Busan universe. He also expressed an interest in continuing the property as a theatrical film series.
His comments suggested a possible return to the confined-space tension of the original film, while taking a stylistic position somewhere between Train to Busan and Peninsula. That is useful evidence of the director’s interest, but it is not the same as a greenlight.
The reporting at the time stated that a third film was not then in development. No later official announcement has established that the concept became an active production.

Why Colony is not Train to Busan 3
Yeon Sang-ho did return to zombie filmmaking with Colony, also known by its Korean title, Gunche. The film was released in South Korea on May 21, 2026.
Colony follows survivors trapped inside a quarantined building after an unidentified infection. The infected develop new collective behaviors, giving the film its own premise and world-building. Official descriptions do not identify it as a sequel to Train to Busan or as part of that franchise.

The confusion comes partly from descriptions of Colony as “the third zombie film from the director of Train to Busan.” That wording refers to Yeon’s filmography. It does not mean the film is the third Train to Busan movie.

The Korean Film Council listing for Colony treats it as a separate project. The council’s filmography for Yeon Sang-ho also does not list a production called Train to Busan 3.
Where Peninsula fits in the franchise
Train to Busan Presents: Peninsula is already the official live-action sequel. Released in 2020, it takes place four years after the events of the first film and follows new principal characters in a devastated Korean peninsula.
It does not continue the original father-and-daughter storyline, which may be why some viewers treat it as a separate spin-off. It is not separate from the franchise, however. The official Well Go USA page identifies it as a sequel set in the same post-apocalyptic world.
The franchise is further complicated by Seoul Station, Yeon Sang-ho’s animated prequel, which was also released in 2016.

The Korean Film Council has described Peninsula as technically the third film in the broader series because Seoul Station is included. In ordinary English-language usage, though, “Train to Busan 3” usually means a hypothetical live-action follow-up to Peninsula.
Will the original cast return?
There is no confirmed returning cast for a new film.
That includes Gong Yoo, Kim Su-an, Jung Yu-mi, Ma Dong-seok, Gang Dong-won, Lee Jung-hyun, and every other performer from the existing films. No casting announcement has been made by an official production source or reputable trade publication.
A return by Ma Dong-seok would be especially complicated because his character, Sang-hwa, dies in the first film. Such an appearance could involve flashbacks, a different continuity, or a new character, but no plan of that kind has been announced.
Yeon’s earlier comments indicated that another story could connect to the established universe without necessarily bringing back the original characters. That makes a new ensemble plausible, but it remains speculation rather than casting news.
Is Train to Busan 3: Redemption the real title?
No. “Train to Busan 3: Redemption” is an unofficial title used in online videos and posts. It has not been announced by a Korean studio, distributor, Yeon Sang-ho, or a confirmed cast member.
At least one widely shared trailer carrying the name is explicitly labeled a fan-made concept trailer. It is not footage from an authorized sequel.
Fan trailers can combine clips from unrelated films, visual effects, artificial voiceovers, and title cards that resemble studio marketing. A polished presentation does not establish that a film exists.
The circulating “Redemption” concept trailer should therefore be treated as fan content, not as a production announcement.

What about The Last Train to New York?
The Last Train to New York is another source of confusion. It is a planned English-language project inspired by Train to Busan, not the third Korean film in Yeon Sang-ho’s series.
Yeon described the American project as a new creation rather than a direct continuation of his Korean films. It was announced with James Wan as producer, Gary Dauberman as writer, and Timo Tjahjanto as director. The project does not have a current confirmed release date in the verified information available for this report.
It should not be described as:
- Train to Busan 3;
- a continuation of Seok-woo and Su-an’s story;
- a confirmed replacement for a Korean sequel; or
- evidence that Yeon’s third film is in production.
Reports about the American project and speculation about a Korean sequel concern separate productions.
Is the 2026 anniversary screening a sequel announcement?
No. The original Train to Busan is returning to selected cinemas in the United States and Canada in a 10th-anniversary 4K theatrical presentation beginning August 14, 2026.
This is a remastered reissue of the 2016 movie. It contains no newly announced sequel material and does not indicate that Train to Busan 3 has entered production. The screening information appears in Well Go USA’s film catalog.

A genuine confirmation would normally include one or more concrete details from an official or highly reliable source:
- An announcement from the Korean distributor or production company.
- A production listing in the Korean Film Council database.
- A statement from Yeon Sang-ho or an officially confirmed director.
- Confirmed casting reported by a reputable film trade publication.
- A production-start announcement.
- An official title, synopsis, poster, teaser, or release date.
None of those has been publicly confirmed for Train to Busan 3 as of August 8, 2026. Until that changes, a supposed release year or cast list should be treated as rumor.

What could a third film look like?
There is only limited evidence to work with. Yeon’s 2021 comments pointed toward another theatrical story in the same universe and suggested a return to the pressure-cooker structure that made the original distinctive. They did not provide a finished plot, characters, location, or timeline.
Because Peninsula followed a different group of survivors, a future film could do the same. The franchise’s setting allows for new characters and new survival situations without undoing the endings of the earlier films. Any specific claim about a new outbreak, a return to Busan, a military storyline, or the resurrection of a past character is currently unverified.
