Gong Yoo’s filmography is unusually varied. He has played a reluctant father in a zombie thriller, a resistance fighter, an immortal romantic hero, a North Korean agent and a quietly damaged husband. His most famous performances are not always his largest ones: in Squid Game, for example, he appears briefly but leaves an outsized impression.
This ranking considers the quality of each project, Gong Yoo’s performance, the size and importance of his role, cultural impact, critical reception and the way each title expanded his range. Rotten Tomatoes scores are included as a current reference, not as the deciding factor.
1. Train to Busan (2016) — Movie
Gong Yoo plays Seok-woo, a divorced fund manager whose carefully controlled life collapses when he boards a train to Busan with his young daughter. A zombie outbreak turns the journey into a moving battlefield, but the film’s central conflict is Seok-woo’s transformation from self-absorbed parent to someone willing to risk everything for other people.
Director Yeon Sang-ho uses the train’s narrow corridors and crowded carriages to create exceptionally tense action. Gong Yoo gives the spectacle an emotional anchor. His character is not heroic at the start; the performance works because the change is gradual, physical and often painful.

2. Silenced (The Crucible, 2011) — Movie
In Hwang Dong-hyuk’s drama, Gong Yoo plays Gang In-ho, an art teacher who discovers physical and sexual abuse at a school for children with hearing impairments. The story is based on Gong Ji-young’s novel and dramatizes abuse reported at a real South Korean school.
Gong Yoo’s performance is deliberately less showy than his work in an action film or fantasy romance. Gang In-ho becomes the audience’s route into an institutional system designed to protect abusers, and his growing anger is balanced by fear, frustration and uncertainty about what he can actually change.
Silenced has a 100% Tomatometer score from five critics and a 93% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The film also had consequences beyond the screen: according to Netflix’s account, Gong Yoo helped initiate the project after reading the novel, and the public reaction contributed to legal changes in South Korea.
Content warning: The film contains disturbing depictions of child abuse and sexual violence.

3. Guardian: The Lonely and Great God (Goblin, 2016–2017) — TV series
Gong Yoo stars as Kim Shin, an immortal military general cursed to live until he finds the human bride who can remove the sword lodged in his chest. The premise sounds like grand fantasy, but the series constantly shifts between romance, comedy, grief and melancholy.

Kim Shin is a role that requires Gong Yoo to move from broad comic timing to quiet vulnerability, often within the same episode. His relationship with the Grim Reaper, played by Lee Dong-wook, also gives the series its most popular comic and emotional partnership.

Its visual style, soundtrack and quotable romantic scenes helped make it one of Gong Yoo’s defining television performances.
Why it ranks here: Goblin is the clearest showcase for his ability to make a larger-than-life character funny, romantic and genuinely lonely.
4. Coffee Prince (2007) — TV series
Before Goblin, Gong Yoo’s breakthrough leading role was Choi Han-gyeol in MBC’s Coffee Prince. Han-gyeol is a wealthy, commitment-averse man ordered to take over a struggling coffee shop. He falls for Go Eun-chan, played by Yoon Eun-hye, while mistakenly believing she is a man.
The café setting gives the series an appealing ensemble structure, but the drama’s lasting interest comes from Han-gyeol’s confusion about his feelings and the assumptions surrounding gender and romance. Gong Yoo plays him as immature and privileged without making him impossible to root for.

MBC’s official synopsis describes Han-gyeol’s reluctant takeover of the coffee shop and his developing relationship with Eun-chan.
Why it ranks here: It established the warm, playful romantic persona that became central to Gong Yoo’s stardom. It is also an important period piece in the development of Korean romantic television.

5. The Age of Shadows (2016) — Movie
Kim Jee-woon’s period espionage thriller casts Gong Yoo as Kim Woo-jin, a member of the Korean resistance during the Japanese colonial period. Resistance fighters attempt to smuggle explosives into territory controlled by Japanese forces while a conflicted police officer, played by Song Kang-ho, tries to identify them.
Gong Yoo is part of an ensemble rather than the film’s sole protagonist. That limitation works in the film’s favour: Kim Woo-jin is disciplined, watchful and politically committed, allowing Gong Yoo to rely on stillness and controlled intensity instead of the more overt charm associated with his romantic roles.

6. Squid Game (2021–2025) — TV series
Gong Yoo plays the unnamed Recruiter, the sharply dressed salesman who approaches financially desperate people and invites them to participate in the deadly games. In Season 1, his appearance lasts only one episode, but the scene became one of the show’s most memorable introductions.
The Recruiter’s politeness makes him more unsettling, not less. He offers a seemingly harmless game, smiles through sudden violence and presents the contest as a choice even though the people he targets are being exploited. Gong Yoo uses charm, menace and comic absurdity in a compact performance.

Netflix states that the character returns in Season 2 with a deeper storyline. The series concluded with its third and final season on June 27, 2025; Netflix has confirmed there will not be a fourth season. The current Rotten Tomatoes scores are 95% for Season 1, 84% for Season 2 and 79% for Season 3.
Important clarification: Gong Yoo is not the lead actor in Squid Game. He does not play Seong Gi-hun or the Front Man. His role is the Recruiter.
Why it ranks here: The screen time is limited, but the performance is one of the most efficient villainous turns in his career.
7. The Suspect (2013) — Movie
Gong Yoo plays Ji Dong-cheol, a former North Korean agent betrayed by his employers and forced to run after a mysterious murder. The film sends him through hand-to-hand fights, car chases and espionage set pieces as he tries to uncover the secrets connected to a dead man’s eyeglasses.
The story is more conventional than Train to Busan or Silenced, but it gives Gong Yoo a physically demanding lead role. Ji Dong-cheol is a man of few words, so much of the character’s history is communicated through movement: how he fights, escapes, observes and protects the people around him.
The Suspect currently holds a 78% Tomatometer score and a 72% audience score.
Why it ranks here: The film established Gong Yoo as a convincing action-thriller lead, even if its screenplay is less distinctive than the films ranked above it.
8. The Silent Sea (2021) — TV series
In Netflix’s eight-episode science-fiction thriller, Gong Yoo plays Captain Han Yun-jae, the leader of a crew sent to an abandoned lunar research station. Their mission is to retrieve mysterious samples, but the station’s history and the behaviour of the samples create a steadily worsening survival crisis.
Han Yun-jae is a restrained, command-oriented character. That gives Gong Yoo a different challenge from the flamboyant Kim Shin in Goblin or the desperate father in Train to Busan. The series combines lunar science fiction with survival horror and environmental anxiety.
The Silent Sea premiered on December 24, 2021, and currently has an 80% Tomatometer score from 15 reviews.
Why it ranks here: The series is uneven, but it is a useful genre showcase and gives Gong Yoo a credible science-fiction captain to play.

9. Kim Ji-Young, Born 1982 (2019) — Movie
Based on Cho Nam-joo’s bestselling novel, this drama follows Kim Ji-young, played by Jung Yu-mi, as she experiences episodes in which she appears to take on the voices and identities of women from her life. Gong Yoo plays Dae-hyun, her husband.
Dae-hyun initially appears supportive, but the film tests how well that support survives family pressure, social expectations and his limited understanding of what Ji-young is experiencing. Gong Yoo keeps the performance understated, allowing the film to remain centred on Ji-young rather than turning her husband into a conventional saviour.
The 2019 drama has a running time of 1 hour and 58 minutes. Gong Yoo’s performance is quieter than his action and fantasy work, but it is important precisely because he plays an ordinary man whose good intentions are not always enough.
Why it makes the list: It shows Gong Yoo working effectively in a grounded contemporary drama and engaging with the emotional limits of a supposedly progressive partner.

10. The Trunk (2024) — TV series

Jeong-won is not a conventional romantic lead. He is damaged, withdrawn and increasingly pulled into a mystery that exposes the emotional arrangements beneath the relationship. Gong Yoo plays the character with a muted intensity that suits the series’ subdued melodrama.
Netflix classifies The Trunk as an eight-episode, TV-MA drama released in 2024.
Why it makes the list: Its cultural impact is smaller than Coffee Prince, Goblin or Squid Game, but it is a worthwhile recent example of Gong Yoo choosing a more controlled and psychologically wounded character.
