The ancient city of Troy has captivated the imagination of archaeologists for centuries, with its mysterious disappearance and legendary tales from the Trojan War. Located along the coast of present-day Turkey, this lost city was once home to a powerful civilisation and acted as the backdrop for one of the most famous stories in literature: the epic tale of Helen of Troy.
The story follows Paris, prince of Troy, who steals away Helen – wife to King Menelaus – thus sparking a war between them. In response to Helen’s abduction, Menelaus gathers an army and besieges Troy in a conflict that would become known as the Trojan War. Numerous heroes on both sides take up arms against each other until King Agamemnon eventually orders a plan that will end their long ordeal – the infamous Trojan Horse.

This great battle of gods and men is an exciting journey through mythology, history, and literature that offers viewers stunning visuals alongside complex characters and riveting plotlines. It is no wonder why people are still captivated by this timeless tale – so much so that in 2004 director Wolfgang Petersen released his movie adaptation starring Brad Pitt as Achilles, Eric Bana as Hector, and Orlando Bloom as Paris titled “Troy”.
In addition to this feature film adaptation, there is also an excellent documentary about Troy which provides viewers with detailed insight into its history – from theories surrounding its founding to potential reasons behind its disappearance. This documentary delves deep into archaeology and anthropology while exploring various artifacts from this era left behind in Turkey such as stone sculptures, jewellery pieces, pottery fragments and much more. With footage from actual sites visited by archaeologists during their meticulous research process – such as Hisarlik where ancient fortifications were uncovered just outside modern-day Canakkale – this documentary gives viewers an immersive experience into one of antiquity’s greatest tales that simply cannot be replicated elsewhere.
