There are two different products in this story: the main YouTube app and website, where people watch all kinds of video, and YouTube Music, Google’s dedicated music service. Reports describe visual updates to controls and icons in the main YouTube app, while YouTube Music has received more clearly documented changes to its player and navigation.

Android Authority reported updated icons and controls in the main YouTube app, including more prominent icons and a music-note animation when someone likes a music video. That report does not establish that these changes were copied from YouTube Music or that a larger redesign is on the way. Android Authority’s report on YouTube’s visual changes is evidence of interface updates, not an announcement of a YouTube Music-inspired makeover.
So “YouTube Music-inspired” is best understood as a description of a possible visual connection—not a confirmed product plan. The available reporting does not identify a specific new main-YouTube screen, a complete set of planned changes, or an official Google announcement tying the two interfaces together.

What YouTube Music has changed
The Now Playing screen gives the queue more room
A redesign reported in 2026 gave YouTube Music’s Now Playing screen a split-view layout. The album artwork became somewhat larger, and Song/Video controls changed from text to icons. The Up Next queue took up more of the lower screen, while Lyrics and Related moved from their previous prominent positions. Users could swipe up to expose the queue, with a further swipe providing access to the fuller queue presentation.
The trade-off is practical: the queue is more visible, but listeners looking for lyrics or related content may need to navigate further. The reported layout and behavior are described by 9to5Google’s coverage of the split-view player.
Search moved into the bottom navigation bar
YouTube Music also moved Search into its bottom navigation bar, replacing Explore in that position. Home, Samples, and Library remained there. Tapping Search opens the keyboard directly; voice search and song search remained available. Categories associated with Explore—including new releases, charts, moods and genres, and podcasts—remained accessible within the redesigned Search experience.

This is a navigation change within YouTube Music, not evidence that the main YouTube app will use the same bottom bar. Details are in 9to5Google’s report on YouTube Music Search.

A fuller album-art treatment was reported as a test
In July 2026, Android Authority reported a limited YouTube Music test involving a fuller album-art presentation in Now Playing. The feature was not available on that publication’s test devices at the time. That report does not establish a general release, or any connection to a redesign of the main YouTube app. Android Authority’s report on the album-art test describes it as limited, not as a settled design.
How to tell a test from a rollout
Product coverage uses “testing,” “rolling out,” and “released” to describe different stages. A screenshot or report about a design is not proof that every user has it—or that the design will remain.

- Reported change: A publication describes a feature or interface it has seen. That alone does not show how many people can access it.
- Limited test: A selected set of accounts or devices may see an experimental design. It can change or disappear.
- Server-side rollout: The service can enable an interface remotely. Having a recent app version may not be enough to receive it.
- Broad rollout: Availability is wider, but delivery can still be staged and differ by account, platform, or region.
- Official announcement: Google publicly confirms the feature or plan. The reporting cited here does not include such an announcement for a complete Music-inspired redesign of main YouTube.
The distinction matters because YouTube Music’s reported player update was controlled server-side. 9to5Google said force-stopping the app could trigger the new interface for some users, but that is not a universal opt-in method.

The version numbers below apply only to the reported YouTube Music changes. They should not be used to identify an update to the main YouTube app.

These are the versions identified in the cited reports, not a guarantee of what will appear on a particular device today. Android and iOS may receive changes at different times; phone, tablet, web, and TV interfaces need not match. The available reporting does not establish that the alleged main-YouTube design is limited to Premium accounts, available in a particular country, or coming to desktop or television.

What the design direction could mean for viewers
If a future YouTube interface uses ideas also seen in YouTube Music, a larger artwork or video area, more prominent controls, or navigation placed closer to the bottom of a phone could make some actions easier to reach. A more visible queue could also help viewers see what is coming next. Those are possible consequences of the design patterns described above, not confirmed features of a new main-YouTube layout.
The same choices can create friction. Icon-only controls may be less obvious than labeled buttons; moved controls can take longer to find; and extra swipes can make common tasks harder to discover. A music-focused player is also not automatically a better fit for tutorials, news, livestreams, or other long-form video. These are usability trade-offs to watch for, not measured findings about a released YouTube redesign.
Interfaces can also vary between accounts and devices during testing. A screenshot from someone else may show a feature you do not have, and a control’s location on a phone may not predict where it appears on a tablet, browser, or cast screen.

How to check for a YouTube Music player change
There is no verified switch for enabling the alleged main-YouTube redesign. For the reported YouTube Music split-view player, these checks may help, but they cannot force an account into a server-side test:
- Update YouTube Music from the official app store for your device.
- Play a track, then open Now Playing. If the new layout is absent, dismiss and reopen the queue.
- On Android, you can try force-stopping YouTube Music from the system’s App info screen, then reopening it. This worked for some users described in the report, not as a guaranteed activation method.
- If the interface still does not appear, your account may not be included in the test or rollout. There is no confirmed public setting or flag to turn it on.
If the interface changed unexpectedly
First reopen the app or browser and check whether the layout persists. If you have another account or supported device, comparing them can help determine whether the change is account-specific or device-specific. On Android, clearing the app cache may help with inconsistent behavior, but it is not a reliable way to undo a server-side experiment.
Reinstalling, downgrading, or sideloading an older app version is not a dependable rollback method and can introduce login, data, or compatibility problems. A server-side test may revert on its own; if a control is confusing, use YouTube’s in-app feedback option to report the issue.
What remains unknown
- Whether Google will announce a complete redesign of the main YouTube app.
- Whether any future YouTube changes will deliberately reuse YouTube Music’s player or navigation patterns.
- The final design, release timing, supported platforms, and regional availability of the alleged YouTube-wide look.
- Whether experimental elements such as fuller album art will become standard in YouTube Music.
YouTube Music’s redesigns show that Google is actively changing the experience of its music app. Separate reports also describe visual updates in the main YouTube app. Until Google connects those changes or confirms a broader plan, the resemblance is suggestive—not proof of a finalized, shared redesign.
