YouTube offers an Erase song option that attempts to remove music identified in an eligible Content ID claim while preserving speech and sound effects. A separate AI-generated replacement option was reported in May 2026 as an addition to the existing Replace song workflow. Neither option removes copyright ownership or grants permission to use the original track.
What YouTube’s music-removal tool actually does
These are editing options for certain videos with Content ID claims, not a general-purpose copyright-removal service. A Content ID claim is a rights assertion that can affect a video’s monetization or availability; it is different from a copyright strike, which generally follows a takedown request. YouTube’s Studio guidance documents three editing remedies: trim out a segment, replace the song, or erase the song.
| Option | What it does | What happens to other audio | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Erase song | Attempts to mute the claimed song. | Designed to preserve dialogue and sound effects, but separation can fail or leave artifacts. | Speech, ambience, or effects may sound damaged if they overlap heavily with the music. |
| Mute all sound | Mutes the entire claimed segment. | Dialogue and effects in that segment are muted too. | You lose all audio in the affected portion. |
| Replace song | Substitutes another track, such as one from YouTube’s Audio Library. | Other audio may remain, depending on the edit and mix. | The new music may not match the scene or its timing. |
| AI-generated replacement | A May 2026 report describes a “Create” option for generating replacement instrumental music within or alongside Replace song. | The report does not establish how speech is handled in every case. | Availability and licensing terms are not fully established in YouTube’s written help documentation. |
| Trim out segment | Removes the video portion containing the claimed audio. | Audio and visuals in the trimmed portion are removed together. | The cut may disrupt the scene or narrative. |
YouTube documents Erase song as an attempt to separate and mute the claimed song while leaving other sounds audible. It warns that the option may not work when the song is difficult to remove. Music mixed loudly with dialogue, a single mono recording, live performances, overlapping tracks, and sound effects in similar frequency ranges can all make clean separation harder. It is not a guaranteed studio-quality stem separator.
The reported AI replacement is a different feature from Erase song: it supplies new instrumental music rather than removing the song and leaving silence. Music Business Worldwide reported on May 1, 2026, that YouTube announced the option through Creator Insider. YouTube’s written help page does not establish the feature’s official name in every market, rollout status, mobile availability, eligibility, or terms for using generated tracks outside YouTube. Treat it as account- and rollout-dependent, and check what appears in your own Studio interface. The report also distinguishes it from Music Assistant, a separate feature. YouTube’s 2025 announcement described Speech to Song as a Shorts feature, not as this claim-resolution tool: Music Business Worldwide’s report and YouTube’s 2025 announcement.

How to remove or replace claimed music in YouTube Studio
Back up the original before saving. YouTube says Studio Editor changes saved since June 2025 cannot be undone with Revert to original. Download a copy of the video or preserve the source project before applying an edit.
On desktop
- Sign in to YouTube Studio and open Content.
- Filter by Claims or Copyright, depending on the interface shown.
- Find the video. In the Restrictions column, hover over its copyright notice and select See details.
- Under Content used, find the relevant claim and select Take action.
- Choose Erase song, Replace song, or Trim out segment. If your account has the reported AI option, a Create button may appear with the replacement workflow.
- Preview the entire affected passage, including its transitions, dialogue, and sound effects. Save only when the result is acceptable.
After saving, Studio may continue processing the edit and show progress and an estimated processing time in the video list. Wait for processing to finish before judging whether the claim has cleared.

In the YouTube Studio mobile app
- Open the Studio app and tap Content.
- Select the video with the copyright restriction, then tap Restrictions.
- In the bottom panel, tap Review issues, then select the relevant claim.
- Choose Erase song or Mute all sound in the claimed segments, then tap Save.
YouTube’s mobile instructions document erasing or muting; they do not confirm that AI-generated replacement is available in the app. For replacement options, check Studio on desktop.
Which remedy fits the video?
- Choose Erase song when background music is the problem but spoken narration, interviews, or sound effects matter. For example, it may suit a documentary scene with café music beneath narration, provided the song can be separated cleanly.
- Choose mute all sound when Erase song leaves distorted audio and the claimed portion is short enough that silence is acceptable.
- Choose Replace song when continuous music matters more than retaining the original track. Preview the full scene: a replacement can change mood, pacing, emphasis, and synchronization with edits.
- Choose trim when the claimed moment is brief and cutting it does not remove necessary footage. A short podcast intro or disposable establishing shot may be easier to cut than repair.
- Consider editing the source project when you need precise control over dialogue, crossfades, loudness, or synchronization. Replacing the track in the original timeline often gives more control than changing a finished upload.
After Erase song, listen for leftover music, metallic or watery speech, missing ambience, damaged effects, abrupt level changes, or rough transitions. If a small amount of claimed audio remains, the claim may remain too. When separation is poor, try muting or trimming instead of repeatedly saving an unsatisfactory edit.

What happens to the claim and monetization?
YouTube says a Content ID claim can be cleared when the claimed audio is fully removed or replaced. That is conditional on the edit removing the claimed material and completing processing; it is not an instant or guaranteed result. A video may contain several claims, so resolving one does not necessarily clear the others.
Claim clearance and monetization are separate checkpoints. Removing a music claim may remove the restriction associated with that claim, but it does not guarantee that the video will earn revenue. Other copyright claims, advertiser-suitability decisions, or channel-level monetization limits can still apply. YouTube also notes that copyright checks are not necessarily final after upload; later claims or changes can affect a video (YouTube’s upload-check guidance).

When to dispute instead of editing
Do not erase a track simply because a claim appeared if you have a reason to challenge it. Use YouTube’s dispute process when you own the relevant rights, have a license that covers this use, believe the claim identifies the wrong material, or have a good-faith basis to believe a copyright exception applies. Keep the license and proof of permission, and check that they cover the actual project, platform, territory, commercial use, and time period.
Giving credit, adding “no copyright infringement intended,” or using only a few seconds does not automatically prevent a claim. Copyright exceptions such as fair use are fact-specific, and only a court can definitively determine whether an exception applies. YouTube’s creator guidance explains these common misconceptions: Copyright areas of confusion. Editing a video is a remedy for its soundtrack, not a way to defeat legitimate rights enforcement; YouTube prohibits technical manipulation intended to evade detection (YouTube policy guidance).

Safer music choices for future videos
YouTube’s Audio Library offers production music and sound effects intended for use on YouTube. Some Creative Commons tracks require attribution, so check the track’s stated requirements. YouTube says its own library is the source it knows to be copyright-safe for the platform; a track labeled “royalty-free” by another channel or site is not automatically safe.
Creator Music may be an option for licensing existing tracks through YouTube, but catalog availability and licensing or revenue-sharing terms should be checked in the creator’s account. For either a library track or a paid license, confirm whether the terms cover client work, advertising, other platforms, livestreams, Shorts, territories, and continued use after a subscription ends. Do not assume that a license for a recording also covers every relevant composition or use.
