YouTube’s “Jump ahead” feature was designed to help viewers skip past sections that other viewers commonly bypass. In May 2024, YouTube widened access to the feature as a limited Premium experiment; on June 27, it announced broader availability for U.S. Premium subscribers on Android. Those are historical rollout details, not confirmation that the feature is available to everyone today.
What YouTube’s Jump Ahead feature did
Jump Ahead was an intelligent skip control, not a summary or chapter list. On a supported video, a viewer double-tapped the right side of the player to seek forward. YouTube could then show a Jump ahead button. Tapping it moved playback past a section its system identified as commonly skipped, with an on-screen cue indicating that a commonly skipped portion had been bypassed.
That destination was not necessarily the next chapter, a creator-selected highlight, or the video’s objectively most important point. It was a suggested skip based on viewing patterns. The feature also differed from a fixed-length 10-second seek, transcript search, or an automatically generated video summary.

What “wider availability” meant in May 2024
The May 5, 2024 report described an expansion of a test—not a launch for every YouTube viewer. At that stage, the experiment was reported as limited to selected YouTube Premium subscribers in the United States, using the Android app and watching English-language videos. Access was offered through YouTube’s experimental-features area, and the control might not appear on every account or video. Contemporaneous coverage of the May expansion said the test was scheduled to end June 1, 2024, while noting that YouTube could extend it. A scheduled end date alone does not establish that the feature disappeared then.

How the original experiment was enabled
For eligible users during the test, the reported route was:
- Open the YouTube app on Android and go to the account or settings area.
- Select Try experimental new features.
- Look for the Jump Ahead experiment and enable it if offered.
- Open an English-language video, then double-tap the right side of the player to seek forward.
- If YouTube offers the Jump ahead button, tap it to skip the suggested section.
This describes the historical opt-in experiment, not a guaranteed current menu path. After the test widened into a broader Premium feature, the opt-in was not described as necessary for the eligible U.S. Android audience.

What YouTube said powered it
YouTube described Jump Ahead as using a combination of AI and viewership data. In practical terms, the feature used aggregate viewing behavior to identify portions that many viewers tended to skip. YouTube did not disclose the underlying model, exact data inputs, ranking formula, or an accuracy rate, so it would be misleading to say that the system understood every video’s narrative or knew which sections were unimportant.
That distinction matters for documentaries, lectures, interviews, and other long-form video: a stretch many viewers skip may still contain a key caveat, source, transition, piece of context, or detail a particular viewer needs. A data-driven shortcut can save scrubbing, but it cannot know every viewer’s purpose.

The June 2024 follow-up
On June 27, YouTube announced that Jump Ahead was available to all YouTube Premium subscribers in the United States on Android. The company said iOS availability would follow in the coming weeks. YouTube’s announcement is the clearest official follow-up to the May experiment: access had broadened beyond selected test participants, but the confirmed scope in that announcement was U.S. Premium subscribers on Android.
The announcement does not establish worldwide availability, nor does the stated plan for iOS confirm when or where that rollout later occurred. The sources documenting the 2024 change do not verify Jump Ahead’s exact availability, eligibility, or interface as of September 2026. YouTube says feature tests and rollouts can vary by account and expand gradually; consult its guidance on experiments and feature availability rather than treating the 2024 limits as current rules.

Why Jump Ahead may not appear
Even during a rollout, a missing button did not necessarily mean the feature had been discontinued. Availability could depend on the account, location, device, app, language, and rollout stage, and the feature was not promised for every video. Videos with little viewing history may not provide useful skip patterns; a short video may have little to gain from the control. The available sources do not specify eligibility for live streams, premieres, music videos, or children’s content, so their behavior should not be assumed.

Double-tap forward first, since the button was associated with that seek gesture. If the feature is still listed as an experiment for your account, check YouTube’s experimental-features area. The trade-off for viewers and creators
For a viewer, Jump Ahead could reduce manual scrubbing through repeated points, pauses, or introductions. But “commonly skipped” is a description of audience behavior, not a verdict on a segment’s value. The shortcut could bypass context or material that matters to an individual viewer. It could also steer viewers away from introductions or sponsorship sections that creators include; that is a possible consequence of the design, not evidence of a measured effect on creator revenue or watch time.
Jump Ahead was a Premium viewing benefit in the documented 2024 rollout. A Premium subscription should not be treated as a guarantee of access to this specific feature today: its present availability is not verified here, and YouTube’s experiments and rollouts can change.
