Watch the enhanced version on the Steve Jobs Archive, or watch Stanford’s official YouTube upload. The address was delivered at Stanford’s 114th Commencement on June 12, 2005. The Archive’s anniversary release was enhanced from SD to HD; it is not footage originally captured in native 1080p.
Watch the official speech
The Steve Jobs Archive page is the best starting point for the enhanced anniversary presentation and its historical context: Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish. The Archive released the enhanced video for the speech’s 20th anniversary in 2025 and describes it as improved from SD to HD.
For familiar player controls, use Stanford’s official speech-only YouTube upload. A separate Stanford upload includes an introduction by then-president John Hennessy, useful if you want more of the commencement-program context.

YouTube’s current player generally labels the setting path as follows; wording and available options can vary by device, app version, account, and rollout.

On a desktop browser
- Open the official video and start playback.
- Select the gear-shaped Settings icon in the player.
- Choose Quality, then select 1080p or 1080p60 if listed.
On iPhone or Android
- Open the video in the YouTube app or a mobile browser, then tap the player.
- Tap the gear or three-dot menu and choose Quality.
- If needed, choose Advanced, then select 1080p or 1080p60 if available.
Reporting on the 2025 remastered YouTube presentation says it can play at 1080p and 60 frames per second. The available options can depend on the particular upload and playback conditions, so check the quality menu rather than assuming the player has selected the highest resolution automatically. What 1080p HD means for this 2005 video
The Steve Jobs Archive says the anniversary version was enhanced from standard definition to high definition. That makes “available in 1080p” a fair description of the remastered streaming presentation when the player offers that setting. It does not mean the speech was originally filmed in native 1080p: enhancement can improve the presentation and output resolution, but cannot recover fine detail that was not present in the original source.

Speech length and what Jobs discusses
The address itself is about 15 minutes, according to the Steve Jobs Archive; versions that include an introduction may run longer. Jobs frames it as three personal stories:
- Connecting the dots: He recounts leaving Reed College and later seeing how experiences that seemed unrelated became useful.
- Love and loss: He describes being removed from Apple, founding NeXT and Pixar, and eventually returning to Apple.
- Death: He discusses his cancer diagnosis and reflects on mortality as a way to think about difficult decisions.
Stanford published the prepared address after its delivery at the university’s 114th Commencement on June 12, 2005. The Archive page also connects the speech to background materials, including drafts and notes.

Read the transcript or use captions
Stanford’s published text, headed “You’ve got to find what you love,” is the preferred source for reading the prepared address. It is a text of the speech, rather than a time-coded transcript of every detail in a particular video edit. For a time-marked transcription, Rev’s transcript is another option.
On YouTube, select the CC control to turn on captions, or use playback speed controls to follow the address more slowly. Automatic captions can mishear names and quotations, so consult Stanford’s text when exact wording matters. The Archive page also provides transcript controls alongside its video.

If 1080p is missing or playback looks soft
- Check the upload: Search results include unofficial reuploads. Confirm the publisher is Stanford or use the Steve Jobs Archive page.
- Check the menu again: If the video is newly uploaded or replaced, higher resolutions may take time to process. YouTube may also adapt quality to the connection or device.
- Check playback settings: Disable data-saving modes, try the YouTube app or a current desktop browser, and select the highest resolution offered. If only 720p appears, it is not 1080p.
- Understand softness: Even with 1080p selected, the image may look soft because the presentation is enhanced from older SD footage.
- If a link fails: Try the Archive page or the other official Stanford upload rather than an unauthorized mirror.
