Disney and YouTube TV reached a multi-year agreement on November 14, restoring Disney’s linear channels, including ESPN and ABC. This article explains what each company said during the dispute and what subscribers could do while the channels were unavailable.
What happened between Disney and YouTube TV?
Disney’s distribution agreement with YouTube TV expired on October 30, 2025. Disney-owned linear channels then disappeared from YouTube TV for approximately 15 days, until the companies announced a settlement on November 14. The blackout arrived during a significant sports period, making the loss especially consequential for subscribers who used YouTube TV for live events.
The affected portfolio included local ABC stations in affected markets, ESPN, ESPN2 and other ESPN networks, Disney Channel and related Disney-branded channels, Freeform, FX networks and National Geographic networks. An independent account of the outage is available from the Associated Press.
The companies also disputed the timing. Disney said YouTube TV removed the channels before the agreement’s formal midnight expiration, while YouTube TV said the existing contract expired without acceptable renewal terms. Disney later referred to a temporary removal after expiration in an SEC filing.

What did the Disney employee memo reportedly say?
According to reporting by 9to5Google about a memo sent to Disney employees, Disney argued that it had offered YouTube TV a package costing less overall than the expired agreement. The memo reportedly presented Disney’s proposal as flexible and innovative, while characterizing YouTube TV’s requested terms as below market or inconsistent with industry standards.
The reported memo also emphasized the value of ESPN and ABC, particularly their live sports and broad audience reach. Disney framed the blackout as YouTube TV’s decision to withhold important programming from millions of customers.
The original memo was not published as a public Disney filing in the cited coverage, so its detailed passages should be understood as reported claims rather than independently verified contract terms. Neither company publicly released the full financial proposal.

How did YouTube TV respond?
YouTube said it had negotiated in good faith and remained ready to reach a fair agreement. Its response argued that Disney’s proposed economics could increase customer costs, although no public term sheet established a specific price increase.

YouTube also accused Disney of negotiating publicly through media statements and paid talent. Rather than accept Disney’s proposed one-day return of ABC, YouTube proposed restoring ABC and the ESPN networks while negotiations continued. Its stated concern was that a brief restoration could be followed by another abrupt outage, confusing customers.
YouTube’s contemporaneous statements appear in its original dispute update and its response to Disney’s ABC proposal.

Disney’s case and YouTube TV’s case
| Issue | Disney’s reported position | YouTube TV’s position |
|---|---|---|
| Economics | Its offer would cost YouTube TV less overall than the expired agreement. | Disney’s demands could raise customer costs; the full proposal was not publicly disclosed. |
| Programming value | ESPN, ABC and live sports justified substantial distribution value. | Subscribers needed a fair bundle and protection from avoidable cost increases. |
| Negotiating conduct | YouTube TV was withholding Disney programming from customers. | Disney was negotiating through public messaging rather than solely at the bargaining table. |
| Interim restoration | Disney sought a temporary ABC restoration. | YouTube preferred ABC and ESPN to return together while talks continued, rather than risk another immediate outage. |
At the center was the traditional carriage-fee problem. Network owners seek wholesale payments that reflect audience demand and expensive rights, especially for live sports. Distributors try to limit those fees, avoid broad bill increases and retain flexibility over bundle design. The public record did not establish whether a different package structure would have lowered bills for non-sports viewers.
Why the blackout mattered to subscribers
- Sports: ESPN’s live portfolio was unavailable through YouTube TV.
- Broadcast television: Local ABC news, entertainment and sports programming disappeared in affected markets.
- Entertainment: Disney Channel, Freeform and FX programming was unavailable as part of the YouTube TV bundle.
- Documentaries and factual programming: National Geographic channels were among the affected Disney-owned networks.
“Disney channels” was therefore not one service or one feed. The exact local ABC station and channel lineup depended on the subscriber’s market and YouTube TV package.

What subscribers could do during the outage
Wait for the negotiation
Waiting was rational for viewers who primarily wanted ESPN or ABC, valued YouTube TV’s DVR and multiview features, and expected a temporary dispute rather than a permanent split. The trade-off was missing live programming while the channels were dark.

Use an antenna for local ABC
An antenna could provide a local ABC broadcast where reception was adequate. Results depended on location, building materials, terrain and antenna placement, and an antenna could not replace ESPN or cable networks.
Use a temporary alternative
A second live-TV service or a Disney-owned streaming product could cover part of the gap. Before subscribing, check whether the service carries the household’s local ABC station, the specific ESPN network needed, the required event rights, compatible devices and recording or replay rules. Promotional pricing, taxes, sports add-ons and cancellation terms can make a short-term replacement cost more than expected.
Choose a targeted service carefully
ESPN access is not equivalent to a full Disney linear bundle, and Disney+ is primarily an on-demand entertainment service rather than a replacement for live ESPN or local ABC. Switching distributors also does not eliminate carriage-dispute risk; it only changes which negotiation affects the household.

The November 14 resolution
Disney and YouTube TV announced a new multi-year distribution agreement on November 14, 2025. Disney’s official announcement said the deal restored the full linear portfolio, including all ESPN networks, ABC, Disney-branded channels, Freeform, FX and National Geographic.
YouTube TV said channels and previously recorded library content would return during the day. Eligible subscribers were offered a one-time $20 credit, with redemption available until December 9, 2025, according to the official subscriber update.
The announcements did not disclose wholesale rates, subscriber guarantees, exact future YouTube TV pricing obligations or detailed ESPN streaming terms. They also did not establish that prices would remain unchanged indefinitely.
What the dispute reveals about live-TV streaming
Internet delivery does not remove the traditional pay-TV contract. Live streaming services still depend on distribution agreements, and the largest bundles can make a single negotiation affect sports, local broadcast television, children’s programming and entertainment at once.
Disney’s leverage came from must-have properties such as ESPN and ABC. YouTube TV’s leverage came from its subscriber base and the possibility that customers could move to another distributor. The November 7 “no deal in sight” framing captured that week’s public stalemate, but it was not the final outcome: the channels returned under a multi-year agreement one week later.
