First, read the exact issue in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room; then change only the setting it identifies. A warning after an FFmpeg codec change can point to an unsupported codec, GOP or keyframe interval, bitrate, frame rate, resolution, audio, or an underfed ingest connection. YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, up to 60 fps, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval not exceeding four seconds. The right repair depends on your warning and FFmpeg build—not a universal command.
Why did YouTube warn after I changed FFmpeg codec settings?
Changing an encoder or its options can alter more than the codec name. It may change bitrate behavior, frame rate, resolution, GOP structure, audio encoding, or how consistently FFmpeg sends data to YouTube. The warning is a diagnostic clue: match its issue type to the setting you changed before adjusting anything else.
YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation categorizes health issues and gives corrective descriptions, including codec, bitrate, frame rate, resolution, keyframe, audio, and primary/backup feed mismatches. Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API health reference is useful when the Live Control Room message needs interpretation.
How to recover the stream, step by step
- Read the complete health warning in Live Control Room. Note the issue category and wording. Avoid changing several encoder options at once; doing so makes it harder to identify the cause.
- Compare your output with the guidance for your ingest protocol. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR) encoding; frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe frequency, not exceeding four seconds. Confirm the codec is supported for your actual ingest mode and available in your FFmpeg build. See YouTube Help’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Change only the implicated setting first. If the warning identifies an unsupported codec, choose a supported codec. If it identifies a long keyframe interval, adjust the GOP interval. If it identifies bitrate, use the recommendation for your codec, resolution, and frame rate, and check that your connection can sustain it.
- Check GOP mode and FFmpeg option behavior. YouTube reports open GOP as unsupported and asks for closed GOP. FFmpeg documents
-gas GOP size in frames; it documents-cgopas enabling open GOP by disabling closed GOP. Remove-cgopif it is present in a configuration meant to use closed GOP. Encoder-specific options vary, so check the selected encoder’s documentation or local help. See FFmpeg’s documentation. - Test with representative content before relying on the stream. Include audio and movement similar to the intended broadcast, then monitor Live Control Room health. YouTube Help advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”
How do I fix an unsupported video codec warning?
Check both the codec being emitted and the ingest protocol. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube’s published guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. A codec name alone does not establish that your particular FFmpeg build, encoder backend, or ingest mode can send it successfully. Confirm the selected encoder exists in your build and that the warning specifically concerns video codec before changing audio or bitrate options.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If the warning concerns audio instead, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS. Verify the audio encoder and stream configuration rather than assuming a video codec adjustment will fix it.
What GOP or keyframe interval does YouTube need?
YouTube recommends a keyframe every two seconds and says the interval should not exceed four seconds. FFmpeg’s -g value is expressed in frames, so multiply the frame rate by the desired interval: at 30 fps, a two-second interval is 60 frames. This conversion does not guarantee identical behavior across encoder implementations or their private options.

Check the warning for open GOP specifically. Google’s API documentation says: “Please change your video encoder’s configuration to "closed group of pictures (GOP)." It appears to be set to "open GOP," which YouTube does not support.” Since FFmpeg’s -cgop flag enables open GOP, do not leave it enabled when configuring for closed GOP.
How do I tell whether bitrate or my internet connection is the problem?
Use the bitrate reference for the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate, then compare the configured bitrate with sustained outbound upload capacity. These H.264 examples are from YouTube Help’s guidance accessed in 2026; they are not universal settings for other codecs or formats.

If Live Control Room reports ingestion starvation, check whether your connection can sustain the configured stream bitrate rather than relying on a brief peak upload result. If recording locally, check that the archive file continues growing: a stalled archive can help distinguish an encoder or input problem from a network-only problem. YouTube discusses testing and stream health in its live encoder guidance.
What if YouTube reports a mismatch between primary and backup feeds?
If you send primary and backup feeds, compare their video codec, profile, resolution, frame rate, keyframe frequency, audio/video bitrate, and audio settings. A mismatch can trigger a health issue even when one feed’s settings look acceptable on their own. Use the exact warning category to identify which values YouTube says differ.

Test and monitor before the event
- Run a test with similar motion and audio to the planned stream, not only a static image or silent feed.
- Watch Live Control Room health messages during the test and while live.
- Change one implicated setting at a time, then retest so the result can be attributed to that change.
- For starvation warnings, verify sustained upload capacity against the selected bitrate and confirm any local recording is advancing.
Troubleshooting when the warning remains
| Warning or symptom | What to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Unsupported video codec | Emitted codec, ingest protocol, and encoder availability in this FFmpeg build | Select a codec supported for the ingest mode and confirm the chosen encoder is available. |
| Open GOP | GOP-related flags and encoder-specific options | Remove -cgop if present and configure closed GOP using the selected encoder’s supported options. |
| Keyframe interval too long | GOP size in frames versus frame rate | Convert the desired interval to frames; target two seconds and do not exceed YouTube’s four-second limit. |
| Bitrate or ingestion starvation | Configured bitrate for the exact format and sustained outbound upload capacity | Correct the bitrate or address the connection constraint; do not infer a codec fault from starvation alone. |
| Resolution, frame rate, or audio warning | Actual output values and the relevant warning text | Adjust the identified parameter and retest; avoid unrelated changes. |
| Primary/backup mismatch | Codec, profile, resolution, frame rate, keyframes, and audio/video bitrate on both feeds | Bring the feeds into parity for the values YouTube flags. |
If the stream is still unhealthy, collect the full warning, FFmpeg version and build, selected video and audio encoders, ingest protocol, resolution, frame rate, bitrate settings, and relevant command options. Those details are needed to choose a safe command; without them, a one-size-fits-all command would be guesswork.
