YouTube Shorts can run for up to three minutes when a new upload is square or vertical. YouTube announced the change on October 3, 2024, and made it effective for qualifying uploads on October 15, 2024. The extra time can suit compact explainers, demonstrations and documentary-style stories—but it does not guarantee more views, and an active Content ID claim can block a Short longer than one minute.
What changed—and who qualifies?
Before the change, the Shorts format was effectively limited to 60 seconds. From October 15, 2024, a new square or vertical upload up to three minutes long could be classified as a Short. YouTube’s current Help documentation confirms the three-minute limit and allows qualifying uploads through the YouTube app or YouTube Studio. YouTube’s announcement and its current Shorts eligibility guidance describe the rules.
The change affects classification of new uploads; it did not convert videos uploaded before October 15, 2024 into Shorts. A square or vertical video longer than three minutes does not qualify under the three-minute rule. If you want a video to remain long-form, YouTube says to use a wider format such as 16:9.
Official Artist Channel exception
YouTube’s current Help page lists a later classification date for Official Artist Channels: new square or vertical videos up to three minutes uploaded on or after December 8, 2025 can be treated as Shorts. Earlier uploads on those channels retain their previous long-form treatment. If an artist channel’s upload behaves differently from a standard channel’s, check how YouTube classifies the channel.

How to upload a three-minute Short
From the YouTube mobile app
- Open the YouTube app and tap Create.
- Choose Short to record, or select a video from your device.
- Use square or vertical footage no longer than three minutes. Edit it and add audio or other elements available to your account.
- Continue to the upload details, set the title, audience and visibility, then publish.
YouTube’s Shorts creation guidance describes the camera and creation workflow. Button labels and tool availability can vary with app version, operating system, account and region.
From YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and select Create, then Upload videos.
- Choose a square or vertical file of up to three minutes.
- Complete the video details and publishing settings, then publish.
If YouTube classifies the upload as long-form, verify its aspect ratio and actual duration, including any unintended frames at the end. Also check when it was uploaded, whether it is an Official Artist Channel, and whether processing is still underway.
Features announced alongside the longer limit
YouTube’s October 2024 announcement covered more than runtime. Some features were described as rolling out, so their appearance may differ across accounts and devices. The announcement is a record of what YouTube introduced or planned, not a guarantee that every user sees the same controls. YouTube’s announcement gives the original feature details.

Templates and remixing
On an eligible Short, a viewer can tap Remix and choose Use this template to follow its structure or timing with their own clips. YouTube also described making it easier to remix clips from multiple videos. Available remix controls depend on the source video’s permissions, music rights, region and account surface. A template is a creative starting point, not a license to copy every visual, sound or branded element.

Trends and comment previews
YouTube announced a mobile Shorts Trends page for discovering popular content and trends in a viewer’s country, along with comment previews in the Shorts feed. Trend discovery is not a promise that YouTube will promote a particular video, and comment previews may not appear for everyone.
“Show fewer Shorts”
Viewers can use the three-dot menu on a Shorts grid in the Home feed to temporarily show fewer Shorts. This adjusts the feed preference; it is not a permanent, site-wide Shorts off switch.

Copyright and music: the critical risk over one minute
A Short longer than one minute with an active Content ID claim can be blocked globally, made unplayable and un-recommended, and excluded from monetization until the claim is resolved. The rule can apply to claimed music or other third-party material; it does not mean that every match has the same outcome. Check YouTube’s three-minute Shorts and claims guidance before publishing a longer edit.
YouTube says most songs from the Shorts Audio Library may be used for up to 90 seconds in a three-minute Short, while some tracks are limited to 60 or 30 seconds. Check the permitted duration for the specific track. Royalty-free tracks in the YouTube Audio Library are another option, subject to each track’s terms. A song licensed for use in an external editor is not automatically equivalent to adding that song through YouTube’s Shorts Audio Library, and a license may not cover every platform or use.
- Choose audio in YouTube’s Shorts tools when that fits the video and available rights.
- Check a track’s allowed duration and license terms rather than assuming every song can run for the full Short.
- Keep documentation for any external music license. “Purchased,” “found online” or “royalty-free” alone does not establish that your intended use is cleared.
- Check YouTube Studio for claims before promoting the upload.
- If a claim blocks the Short, remove or replace the claimed material, or dispute the claim only if you have a sound basis. YouTube outlines copyright options and qualifications in its copyright guidance.
For royalty-free music and sound effects, YouTube’s Audio Library provides track-specific terms. Do not assume a track’s availability there grants rights for uses beyond those terms.

How three-minute Shorts are monetized
Qualifying Shorts can earn through the Shorts revenue-sharing model if they appear in the Shorts Feed and the channel is eligible for the YouTube Partner Program and has accepted the Shorts Monetization Module. This is not the same as standard Watch Page monetization. YouTube explains the model, eligibility and exclusions in its Shorts monetization guidance.
- A blocked Short cannot earn Shorts revenue while it remains blocked.
- Non-original, repetitive, reuploaded or minimally transformed material can be ineligible. YouTube’s monetization and commercial-use guidance describes relevant requirements.
- Views earned before accepting the Shorts Monetization Module do not qualify for Shorts ad-revenue sharing.
- Music use does not mean the creator keeps all revenue from a video; the Shorts model uses a pooled revenue structure that accounts for music licensing.
When is the extra time useful?
Three minutes is a maximum, not a target. It can help when compressing an idea into 60 seconds would remove necessary context or make it confusing: for example, a recipe with essential steps, a product walkthrough, a short interview, a fitness demonstration, a mini-documentary or a story with a genuine setup and payoff. It is a poor fit when the extra runtime merely adds pauses, repetition or a longer wait for the point.
- State the promise or show the result in the opening seconds.
- Use clear visual or informational beats to keep the viewer oriented.
- Cut slow introductions, repeated explanations and pauses that do not add meaning.
- Give the ending a real payoff rather than stretching the conclusion.
- Compare versions of similar ideas at 30, 60, 90 and 180 seconds. Judge them using retention and engaged views rather than assuming the longest cut will perform best.
YouTube said it intended to improve recommendations for longer Shorts, but did not promise a ranking boost for every three-minute upload. The original rollout also unfolded in phases: some longer Shorts initially appeared as regular videos on certain surfaces, while recommendation and creation-tool support were being introduced. That was a rollout issue, not the standard rule described by current eligibility documentation. YouTube’s rollout FAQ records those early limitations.

Troubleshooting a long-form classification or a blocked upload
The upload appears as a regular video
- Confirm that the frame is square or vertical, not wider than it is tall.
- Check that the final file is no longer than three minutes.
- Check the upload date against the applicable classification date, including the later date for Official Artist Channels.
- Allow processing to finish; early rollout reports described delays on some surfaces.
- If you intended to publish long-form, use a wider format such as 16:9.
The Short is blocked
Look for an active Content ID claim, especially if the video is longer than one minute. Remove or replace the claimed material, or dispute the claim when you can support that challenge. YouTube’s Shorts guidance explains the blocking rule.
The app cannot record the full length or a feature is missing
During the October 2024 rollout, some creation tools lagged behind the new upload limit. Current YouTube guidance describes Shorts camera support for up to three minutes, but app behavior and feature access can still vary. Try importing the finished square or vertical file through the app’s upload flow or uploading it in Studio. The historical rollout FAQ and current creation guidance describe the distinction between rollout timing and supported creation workflows.
