If your encoder says the YouTube stream key is invalid, copy the current key from YouTube Studio and replace the saved key in your encoder. Reconnecting alone is not documented as a cause of key invalidation; a stale or mismatched saved key is one plausible explanation. The steps below separate that credential problem from sign-in, RTMPS, and network errors.
Replace the encoder’s saved stream key
- Check how your encoder connects. If it has a stream-key field, follow the steps below. If you sign in to YouTube through the encoder and do not enter a key, contact the encoder provider; YouTube says the software may need an update to work with YouTube Live. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance covers both cases.
- Open the current key in YouTube Studio. Go to Create > Go Live, then select Stream in Live Control Room. Copy the stream key shown for your current settings. YouTube describes stream keys as the password and address that let an encoder send a feed to YouTube. See Manage live stream settings.
- Replace the key in the encoder. Paste the copied value into the encoder’s stream-key field or configured destination, replacing—not appending to—the saved value. Save the settings, then try starting the encoder again. A remembered key may be stale, particularly if the key was changed or reset.
- Reset only if needed. In Live Control Room’s Stream tab, find Stream key and select Reset next to the hidden key. Copy the newly generated key and replace the encoder’s saved value. A channel owner or manager can reset a key; editors and viewers cannot.
YouTube’s published steps support updating the encoder with the current key as the primary fix for an encoder-start error. They do not say that reconnecting itself invalidates a key, so treat a stale key as a possible diagnosis—not a proven explanation for every reconnect error.
Tell a key error apart from a connection error

YouTube recommends updating the encoder and suggests trying another encoder if local output problems persist. If an internet test indicates a connection problem, contact your internet provider. |
