YouTube’s message—“For now, you can’t change the thumbnail on your Short”—comes from the older Shorts thumbnail workflow, but it is no longer a universal rule. On July 24, 2026, YouTube announced that YouTube Partner Program (YPP) creators are beginning to receive the ability to upload custom thumbnails for Shorts. The rollout is gradual, so some channels still see the old restriction while others see new thumbnail controls.
If the upload option is missing on your account, use the frame-selection tools YouTube provides, especially in the mobile app, and choose carefully before publishing. YouTube’s Help Center still says that a selected Shorts thumbnail cannot be changed after upload, and the newer announcement does not clearly guarantee post-upload editing for every account.
Is “you can’t change the thumbnail” still true?
It is still true for some accounts, but not as a platform-wide rule. YouTube began rolling out fully custom Shorts thumbnails to YPP creators in July 2026. The company says the feature will expand to additional creators over time, which means access depends on the account and rollout stage rather than on a single public rule that applies to everyone.
Creators who are not yet included may continue to see the message that they cannot change the thumbnail. The same can happen if the feature has reached one upload path or device but not another, or while YouTube’s interface and documentation are being updated.

The practical test is your own upload screen: look for an image-upload control in the thumbnail section. If it is present, your account has the custom-thumbnail capability for that workflow. If it is absent, you should assume that the older frame-selection process applies.
YouTube’s official announcement is the most current explanation of the rollout: YouTube’s custom thumbnail update.
Why are creators seeing different thumbnail options?
Shorts thumbnail controls have changed over time and have not always been identical across desktop Studio, the mobile YouTube app, and different upload paths. YouTube is now introducing another change, but it is staged rather than instantly available to every channel.
That produces three common situations:
- Eligible YPP account with the new control: the upload workflow may allow a custom image.
- Account without the new control: YouTube may allow only a frame selected from the Short, or may show suggested frames on desktop.
- Documentation or interface mismatch: the Help Center may still describe the older rule even though some creators have received the newer feature.
There is no supported basis for saying that every creator now has the feature, and YouTube’s announcement does not establish a subscriber-count requirement for it. The initial eligibility description is YPP participation, with access expanding over time.
What to do if YouTube still shows the message
- Open the Short’s upload or editing workflow. Use YouTube Studio on desktop or the YouTube mobile app, depending on where you are preparing the video.
- Inspect the thumbnail area. If you see an image-upload control, you can try uploading a custom thumbnail. This capability was initially announced for YPP creators.
- If there is no upload control, check for frame selection. On desktop, YouTube says creators may be offered three suggested frames.
- On mobile, scrub through the video. When the frame-selection control is available, YouTube says mobile creators can select any frame from the Short.
- Make the choice before publishing. YouTube’s Help Center still says that the selected Shorts thumbnail cannot be changed after upload. Because the newer announcement does not clearly promise universal post-upload editing, do not publish on the assumption that you can replace the thumbnail later.
If none of these controls appears, there may be nothing wrong with your Short or your account settings. Your channel may simply not have received the staged rollout yet.
Can you upload a custom image for a YouTube Short?
Some YPP creators can now do so, but the option is not universal. YouTube’s July 2026 announcement introduced fully custom Shorts thumbnail uploads for YPP creators and said that availability would expand over time.

For an account included in the rollout, the thumbnail area should provide an image-upload option during the relevant upload workflow. The exact appearance of the control can change as YouTube updates Studio and the mobile app.
If your account does not show that option, do not rely on unofficial workarounds such as uploading the video in a different format and hoping YouTube will recognize it later as a Short. Those methods are not a reliable or current solution to an account-level rollout restriction.

Can you change a Shorts thumbnail after uploading?
Do not assume that you can. YouTube’s Help Center currently states that the frame selected for a Short cannot be changed after upload. The page describes the older workflow, in which creators choose a frame rather than upload an external custom image.
The newer July 2026 blog announcement confirms the arrival of custom Shorts thumbnails for some YPP creators, but it does not clearly establish that every creator can edit a custom thumbnail after publication. The safest advice is therefore:
- Choose the frame or upload the image carefully before you publish.
- If you have already published the Short and cannot find an edit control, treat that as expected rather than as a hidden setting you have missed.
- Do not delete and re-upload a Short merely to test a rumored workaround unless you have considered the loss of the existing upload’s URL, views, comments, and audience history.
YouTube’s current Help Center guidance on Shorts thumbnails is available at YouTube Help: Add video thumbnails on YouTube.
Where will the selected thumbnail appear?
A Shorts thumbnail does not necessarily look the same everywhere on YouTube. YouTube’s Help Center says the selected frame can appear in locations including:

That should not be interpreted as a promise that the image will appear identically in every Shorts-feed context. For vertical videos, thumbnail presentation can vary by surface, including the Home, Explore, and subscriptions pages. A carefully designed thumbnail can help on surfaces where it is displayed, but it cannot control every presentation of a Short inside the feed.
Why older tutorials contradict the current instructions
Many tutorials from 2023 through 2025 accurately described the tools available at the time: creators commonly selected a frame in the mobile YouTube app and found no equivalent custom-image control in desktop Studio. Community reports from that period reflect those earlier differences, but they should not override YouTube’s July 24, 2026 announcement.
At the same time, the Help Center still contains language from the older workflow, including the statement that custom thumbnails cannot be uploaded for Shorts. The conflict is best understood as a documentation and rollout lag—not as evidence that one universal setting is being hidden from every creator.

- Check the controls actually displayed in your current upload workflow.
- Compare them with YouTube’s newer official rollout announcement.
- Use the Help Center’s post-upload warning as a reason to choose carefully, because that limitation may still apply to your account or workflow.
- Avoid unofficial workarounds that depend on YouTube misclassifying a video.
Thumbnail preparation when you only have frame selection
If your account does not yet have custom uploads, you can still design the video so that a useful frame is available. Place the main subject clearly in the vertical composition, avoid essential text near the edges, and include a moment with strong contrast and an understandable visual focal point.
Before uploading, scrub through the Short and identify frames that remain legible when displayed at a small size. A frame that looks attractive in the editing timeline may be too dark, too busy, or mid-motion when used as a thumbnail.

Creators filming their own material may also benefit from a phone tripod for YouTube Shorts to produce steadier, more intentional source footage. A tripod does not alter YouTube’s thumbnail permissions or enable post-upload replacement; its value is simply that stable footage makes it easier to capture a clean frame for selection.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Is this related to Shorts monetization?
No. Thumbnail access and monetization are separate issues. YouTube’s monetization documentation lists features that eligible YPP creators may access, including Shorts Feed advertising, YouTube Premium revenue, Shopping, channel memberships, and Super Thanks, subject to the applicable requirements.
Being in the YPP rollout for custom Shorts thumbnails does not by itself guarantee access to every monetization feature, and monetization eligibility does not mean that every thumbnail control will appear immediately. Check the specific requirements for each feature in YouTube’s monetization policies and eligibility guidance.
Quick diagnosis
| What you see | What it likely means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Custom image-upload control | Your account has received the newer thumbnail capability for that workflow. | Upload the image and verify the preview before publishing. |
| Three suggested frames on desktop | You have frame-selection tools but not necessarily custom-image upload. | Choose the strongest suggested frame before publishing. |
| Frame selector in the mobile app | You can select a frame from the Short. | Scrub through the video and choose a clear, representative frame. |
| “For now, you can’t change the thumbnail” | Your account may not yet be included in the staged rollout, or the current workflow may not support the feature. | Use frame selection if offered; otherwise wait for access and do not rely on unofficial workarounds. |
| No thumbnail-edit option after publication | The older post-upload limitation may still apply. | Do not assume the thumbnail can be replaced; plan the choice before publishing. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Does every YouTube creator have custom Shorts thumbnails now?
No. YouTube announced the feature first for YPP creators and is expanding it gradually. Some creators may still see the message that they cannot change the thumbnail.
Is there a subscriber requirement for custom Shorts thumbnails?
YouTube’s July 2026 announcement identifies YPP creators as the initial group but does not state a specific subscriber threshold for this feature.
Can I choose a thumbnail frame on my phone?
When the control is available, YouTube says the mobile app lets creators scrub through the Short and select any frame. This is frame selection, not necessarily the ability to upload an external image.
Will a custom Shorts thumbnail appear in the Shorts feed?
Not necessarily in the same way everywhere. YouTube identifies search, hashtag and audio pages, and the channel page as thumbnail locations, while presentation can vary across YouTube surfaces.
The Bottom Line
The message is a real remnant of YouTube’s older Shorts workflow, but it is no longer a universal ban. YouTube began rolling out custom Shorts thumbnail uploads to YPP creators on July 24, 2026, while other accounts may still have only frame selection—or no thumbnail-change control at all. Check your own upload screen, choose carefully before publishing, and do not assume that a Shorts thumbnail can be edited afterward.
